A good mixture of games here, most of which are indie (well, doujin. Basically the same thing).

I'm not really interested in indie games at all. I don't like how most of them look, and the ones I've tried have had underwhelming game design. I don't know how to explain what I would like except by listing what I already like.

Favorite developers:
-Nintendo
-Platinum Games
-G.rev
-Sega AM2
-Treasure
-Cave
-M2
-Older Sega/Konami/Capcom

Favorite games:
-Vanquish
-Final Fight
-Strania - The Stella Machina
-God Hand
-SMW2: Yoshi's Island
-After Burner Climax
-Mars Matrix
-Rhythm Heaven Fever
-Gotcha Force
-Sega Super GT
-Gunvalkyrie
-Phantasy Star Online
-Contra: Hard Corps

Quoted you already, but you'll probably want to buy the bundle above. If only for Astebreed.

I absolutely love games that'll let me go nuts with stat points, with level-ups, all that jazz. Think Diablo 2 stat system with FFX's level system (dat sphere grid)

Any indies that really shine in that regard?

Also, have anyone tried something like Heroes 3, indie-style?
Path of Exile is pretty much exactly what you're looking for. Best of all it's free!

One more reminder for the new page:

AWESOME ANNOUNCEMENT

Thanks to the generosity of Lab Zero Games and Ravidrath, I have five codes for Skullgirls to give away - and these codes include all the DLC characters as well!

These codes will be open to anybody in this topic who actively engages in a back and forth on the subject of indies. That includes those of you who love indies, so everyone is invited! From here on out, all people who participate in this thread will be entered into the contest randomizer for selection by 14 August 2014 @ 4:30PM(EST).

Thanks again for all the recommendations and participation so far!

Have you tried Transistor? One of my favorite games released this year.

It is mainly played as more of a strategy RPG, but the combat system has a deceiving amount of depth. I played through in NG+ as purely an ARPG.

I haven't, but I'll check it out! Thanks

From the start screen, Transistor is a fantastic game and easily one of the best games of the year.

I saw something cool for Patapon, but nobody had anything for:

Dragon Quest 8-10?
I can't think of any full 3D JRPG indie right now. To be fair, there aren't that many retail Japanese games that are like these in the first place (and all 3 are different).

If 2D doesn't bother you, the ones I'd recommend are the Zeboyd games, Breath of Death and Cthulhu Saves the World are pretty great and charming, if a bit derivative at times. Their next game, Cosmic Heroine, is pretty much a classic Phantasy Star.

Dragon Fantasy tries to do that but it didn't click as much with me.

Just played through transistor and beat it.
I didn't really like it, I didn't like Bastion though either. There are some cool things in the game, but it was really short - Steam has me at 3 hours.
Things I liked -
- The artwork was pretty nice and the music
- The ability to mix functions together to make a new function

Everything else -
The game was really repetitive to me and it didn't seem to matter what functions you used to beat the enemies just as long as you hit them. Maybe they had some weaknesses that would have made them go down easier, but it didn't seem to matter. I felt like I would go into a different area and do pretty much the exact same thing over and over again.

I remember thinking the combat was too slow too. I like when attacks are really fast or happen when I hit the button instead of taking time to charge or being vulnerable after a heavy attack.

I found Bastion to be really cool and I loved the narrator, but it got repetitive to me fast. Now you're making me think Transistor would be the same.

Delve Deeper looks cool but I don't like that it's turn based. I tried Terraria once but couldn't get into it.

I'm all over the place with my gaming likes. I don't think it will be of much help. But I'll list my favorite games from the last few years.

Knack
Ryse
LBP PSP(best controls)>LBP1>>LBP2>>>>>>>LBPV
Project Spark -Dominating my play time atm
Skyrim
Dragon's Dogma
Too Human
Tomb Raider
Donkey Kong 2K - Intellivision
Walking Dead
Crackdown

In some of the more open games above I am able able to find a play style that fits me. I think the problem with indies for me is the games are more narrowly focused.

Oh wow, you're right, that is 'all over the place' in terms of genre! All solid games, though (I don't care what anyone says about Too Human, it was pretty darn fun).

Let's see... if you enjoy finding your own play style in a game, there are some good indie titles to accommodate that. The genres might be a little different from what is above, but I'll list them anyway... just in case you want to look into them a bit more. :)

I'm not sure if Klei counts as indie (labels!), but Mark of the Ninja is an incredibly engaging stealth/action title. The controls and gameplay are super tight, and as you progress, you'll be able to choose new skills to learn. The best part about the game, though, is that it never really forces 'one solution' upon you: After the game teaches you the ropes, you can use any of the tools you have to solve any situation. It's one of my favorite games in a good while, indie or otherwise.

If you like tower defense games, Orcs Must Die! is a fantastic one. Given the genre, you can do practically whatever you want... as long as you kill the orcs, of course.

Finally, if you enjoy the punishing difficult of rougelikes, Dungeons of Dredmor as an incredible amount of character customization. Of course... it's a little difficult how each character trait works with your characters until you play with it a bit, but that's part of the fun for many people. Also, you can turn off permadeath, if you so please.

(And by the way, hope you enjoy Steamworld Dig!)

Admittedly I had more fun on my NG+ playthrough of Transistor as I had access to more abilities. The mechanics are actually deceivingly deep, I played that second run as purely an ARPG and rarely used the planning mode.

I have found that the largest criticism you can levy on Transistor is the rate at which Supergiant allowed the player to acquire abilities. They kind of trickle them in for the majority of the game, then dump them on you the last hour. The strength of the game comes from experimenting with the combat system.

It's cool man, and I'd even try out another indie, like this doesn't turn me off to them. Have another one? Really any genre, just what's your favorite?

Have you tried Tales from Space: Mutant Blobs Attack? It's a 2D platformer by the Guacamelee guys.

Then I'd say Velocity Ultra. Even though is a shmup, it's not score based as that is only required if you want to go for the 100%. It's more of a fast paced puzzle game than a shmup

Also, Guman Clive. But that's <1h short.
Steamworld Dig is short and metroid-y but you can say it may get too deep
eh eh

PS: I agree with you about Limbo, in fact it's one of the indie games I liked the less

Steamworld Dig is a Metroidvania to a certain extent, and it's available on 3DS (it will be available on Wii U too later this month)

Wii U has Knytt Underground...but that's a pretty particular game. First of all it's all about exploring a huuuuge world, there's no combat. Platforming is great though, thanks to the switching mechanics (you can switch in real time to another charachter, a bouncing ball)

For Metroidvania Dark Soulish games on the Wii U, UnEpic is pretty great. Art is a little lacking, but it's fun.
