Oculus Rift DK2 Thread

I have only had my rift for a few (busy with work) days so I will just provide a few very brief impressions.

Firstly I am not the ideal candidate for this unit, my IPD is low (by standards) at around 60mm and I am stereo blind (do not perceive 3D in real life, funny thing is I only found this out about a week ago[now I know why stereograms, 3D movies, 3DS never worked for me], I am 37... and was born with Amblyopia but was never told about the stereo/3D part).

But goddam, using the rift, my brain has been somewhat forced to use both eyes concurrently (albeit for only brief moments of time) and the effect I get, I could only describe as 3D, well the image has a lot more depth to it than anything I see in real life. While I cannot hold this 3D image when it presents itself it's really a WOW moment. I have found while not perfect the B cups seems to work with me best and provide the closest sweet spot.

I have tried a bunch of demos but the 2 stand out game changing moments for me have been Elite (yeah everyone knows this) but also World of Diving. I used to dive but had to quit due to sinus problems, playing World of Diving gave me goosebumps a number of times and was up there with Elite in terms of immersion/effectiveness.

I can't wait to see how this tech evolves over the coming years, exciting times :D

Star Citizen is more ambitous than Elite and I think it hurt the development, at least in the initial stages. Having that much money raised through crowdfunding raises the expectations to a level that will be hard to reach. Technically and graphically it seems on another level though...

Elite seems to have a clear goal in mind (and extension plans, like landing on planets, that will be implemented depending on the success of the game).

Have you tried both on Oculus? I'm just curious about the scale of the planets between the two games. From the videos of Elite, the scale looks good, but the planets seem a bit on the small side. And they seem to be obviously unfinished. In Star Citizen the scale of the planets seems to be much larger. But that not may be the case. Just curious if anyone could answer this for me.

I'm dying to see planets and stars to scale in VR and I hope neither Elite nor Star Citizen skimp on this.

I've only tried Elite so far....I plan to start up SC on the weekend...
Planets seem good to me in Elite. I think the lack of sense of scale comes from the speeds you are travelling at in Elite, but cruising by a ringed Gas Giant definatly gives you a good sense of its scale. The planets don't look as good as in SC but they've been improving in every update so far...

Are both of them specifically developed for VR?
They are not VR only games, but they have very good support. Sitting in a cockpit is the perfect situation for VR anyway...

The Desk Scene within the utility already blew me away. It felt really immersive, to the point where I expected to be able to touch the desk.

The resolution is a problem with text and distant objects but it's very playable. I got a bit motion sick whenever I flew into a station and moved towards the landing pad. Don't know why exactly.

Yeah, hehe my wife kept doing some cute hand gestures trying to touch things inside the Elite Dangerous cockpit (and the desk demo).. The presence is much greater in the DK2 than in the DK1, that's for sure.

When it comes to motion sickness, I don't know what kind of hardware you're running, but on my system (i7 3770k 660 Ti) the graphical intensity of the stations tend to generate some judder / drop out of 75 Hz which leads to making my synapses slightly stressed out..

I'm in the UK. Very glad the wait has only been a few weeks. Time to start downloading demos :D

I really want to try a flight sim with my rift but I can't get either DCS or War Thunder to run. I've tried both both in Direct and Extended mode. :(

In DCS I have the "auto detect rift" option enabled. But when I load the game I get a dual screen on my ordinary monitor instead of in the rift. If I move the headset around it tracks on the monitor but no video signal to the rift.

In War Thunder I haven't even found an option in-game to enable the rift.

Cheers for any help you guys can give me!

That might be it. Need to display the FPS nexttime I play...

set rift to extended, set rift screen to primary, kick the game in.

For War Thunder, the rift option is on the splash screen. You need to click the little gear icon that is next to the row of resolutions

Anyone having camera woes? I initially struggled to get it installed properly, but trying different USB ports and reinstalling everything sorted it. Last night though it went all device not recognised on me.

I don't know why in your case, nor if this is related, but for any device connection it's important to keep in mind that in some instances other devices or drives may often tend to block eachother, especially in my experience any kind of Logitech drivers (f.ex. Windows refuses to recognize my HOTAS joystick if my G27 drivers are running, even if the wheel itself is not attached). If nothing else helps, go through your taskbar notification and task manager and close/stop devices/programs and drivers if necessary for troubleshooting.

Still cant get Elite Dangerous to work. Runs fine in normal mode and starts fine in Rift mode but with no head tracking at all. Its setup right, secondary display, 75hz ect. But no matter what I do no head tracking will work.

I've tried closing the Rift Config Tool and OVRService_x64.exe/wscript.exe, which makes the game crash at startup (tried closing wscript.exe by itself and the game starts so is OVRService being closed that's crashing the game).

I also read something about Windows Firewall causing problems somehow so I disabled that, doesn't change anything.

Is it possible this is a similar problem to the "OVRService_x64.exe stopped working" error? That is causing by a CPU which lacks SSE4.1 support (like mine). I get past that by running OVRservice_x64.exe with a SSE4.1 emulator. Is it possible that Elite Dangerous has its own OVRservice_64.exe built into the game which also requires SSE4.1 (which is why it requires you to close the original OVRservice from Oculus)? That would explain why its crashing, as its running its OVRservice without emulation.

Just to confirm that's definitely the problem with Elite Dangerous. It has its own OVRService built in (which is why you have to close the Oculus OVRService_64.exe to get head tracking). Unfortunately for people with a none SSE4.1 CPU you can't set the Elite Dangerous OVRService to run with a SSE4.1 emulator like you can with the external Oculus service.

So the game then crashes at startup when its OVRservice starts and finds no SSE4.1. I confirmed it by unplugging my camera. The game now starts and basic head tracking works, but obviously no positional tracking.

In addition to Direct Mode not working at all, for some reason Extended Desktop mode also doesn't work properly on my PC. I have to switch screens completely with Win+P to make the rift display anything. It shows up in Windows display properties, but if I try to change any options there (like rotate display or extend desktop), it says the changes can't be saved. Quite frustrating...

Cineveo is now crashing when the video loads, since the last update :( I contacted the guy but no answers yet.
Strange it still work really well with the 0.7 for me.
Really really good viewer by the way, with some good work made on the UI. The skybox could really use to be further from us thought.

Its probably your processor lacking SSE instructions. You can test by seeing if it doesn't crash when the camera can't see the DK2. I saw instructions for a work around in the interim that worked for me.

Hadn't seen this until now. What was the work around? Or do you just mean turning the camera off for basic head tracking?

Thanks! Seems nice.

I think mine is busted. I get weird blue artefacts all over the screen. If I jiggle the HDMI cable on the rift itself it goes away, but comes back after a few seconds of head movement.

Any ideas?
Contact Oculus support about that. You could also try a different HDMI cable if you have one around, just in case it's only the cable.

Ok now I sort of have Elite Dangerous running (just no positional tracking yet) the next step is to try to improve performance. Best I can get is 36fps with everything set to low quality. I realise I can't expect too much from a HD7770, but are there any tips to improve performance without buying a new graphics card?

Alright yeah so the cool thing is, the reason some people are stereo blind is essentially because their brain doesn't "get it". I actually had a pretty similar experience myself with the 3DS -- the 3DS looked SO AMAZING, and I wasn't even entirely sure why. Even being stereoblind you still get some depth cues, but everything on the 3DS just looked so... round. Well, lo and behold, some time after that, at a Walmart, I'm just looking at this balloon and it's like my brain flipped a switch -- suddenly that balloon was just... there, floating in the air and I could actually tell exactly where it was at!

So, I'm not sure if it's because of there being visible pixels (The low fidelity forcing the brain to compare the two images perhaps?), or what, but it does seem that these sorts of 3D screens can actually help our brain figure this shit out.

I'd never support that scum of a developer though, have been a whole lot of shitstorm about him on reddit since the very beginning regarding a bunch of different stuff.

Welp...selling my DK2 to a coworker at cost. I just don't have the time I need to get much out of it at this point.

Going to try to sell my DK1 as well, though that may be a bit harder.

set Elite to run with the SSE4.1 emulator and see if that works. I can get UE4 stuff to work that way, and Technolust Beta also.

Unfortunately it comes with a pretty major performance hit for the whole game to be going through the SSE emulator rather than just the camera service.

I've heard a couple of stories like this actually, and I know that the Rift has been used to successfully treat stereo blindness too. It's pretty cool. I have a friend who I want to try out the Rift DK2 to see if she gets 3D from it, since nothing else she's tried has. But the headtracking might just do it.

You pop open the front and make sure the HDMI cable is seated correctly? (by front I mean the cover to the cables.

I still need to get some Velcro and attach it to that cable so it doesn't keep "sliding down" the back part causing tension on the front connection.

I'd never support that scum of a developer though, have been a whole lot of shitstorm about him on reddit since the very beginning regarding a bunch of different stuff.

Is that the Sven guy? He made an apology post on reddit also. Seems he handled some things poorly and admitted it. I have no stake in it but it seems like he just got frustrated, which is something a 'company' shouldn't do. But it is just one dude. Not excusing his attitude, but he's made right with a lot of people.

EDIT: Here's the thread

DOUBLE EDIT: Had no idea about World of Diving. Always wanted to get into that game. Just pre-ordered so will mess around with it later this weekend. Ocean Rift (and underwater stuff in general) is my favorite).

That is pretty amazing. The first time you've ever experienced actual stereo was using the Rift? Wow.

Also, World of Diving supports DK2? Holy crap, going to buy it right now.

Shit, I might have missed the boat. Had to replace a damaged credit card this week and this seems to have interfered with my order. Oculus tried to charge the full amount a couple of hours ago and did not succeed due to changing info after the credit card change. I have provided the correct info, but I guess that "my unit" might have gone to someone else ... They only charge the full amount when they are ready to ship, right?

The same thing happened to me when they were trying to charge me for DK1. They took my new info and kept my order shipping out in the same batch that time, so hopefully you're in the same boat with DK2.

Good to hear that I might get one from the current batch after all. The payment has already been processed within one day of their "notice", so I am holding my thumbs ...

The game starts with a launcher, that then starts the main exe, so its impossible to start the main exe with emulation.

Still having so much trouble getting anything working properly, even simple stuff that's running at well over 100fps according to MSI Afterburner still judder so much, going to look back through the thread and see if I can finally get most demos to work properly at 75fps.

This should be of interest to you. I believe it is scheduled to release late 2014 / early 2015:

Diplopia - A VR Game to Help Strabismus and Amblyopia

Oh my god you guys, mine just arrived! This is a dream coming true, I've never tried one of these things!

Welcome...

Any more experiences for those with slight astigmatism on using the Rift without their glasses? Spherical, I have one normal eye and one -1, and cylindrical I have 0,5 in both eyes. I can see perfectly in most circumstances, except that reading text or things with sharp contrast becomes tiresome really fast and causes quite a headache. I don't know if I can use the Rift more than five minutes without getting a bursting head. How comfortable is it if you keep on your glasses?

For what it's worth (I must admit I have no idea how these numbers compares to your vision) (my contact specs, couldn't find my prescription for glasses:

Right
( SPH / PWR ): -0,00
( AXE ): 170
( CYL ): -2,25

Left
( SPH / PWR ): +0,50
( AXE ): 30
( CYL ): -2,25

With these eyes I see very good with the A cups in the DK2. I don't even need nor want to try with glasses on.

Thanks for making that video (I'm the developer), it's actually the first time a lot of my family/friends get to see it running!

The thing I learned demoing the original version was that if you told people not to go down into the deep the apprehension really put them on edge - the same technique used in horror films I guess. All you have to do is hint at something - a person's imagination does the rest far better than I ever could!

Thanks! You'll have to tell me how to pronounce your name sometime. I wasn't even going to try in the video for fear of butchering it. I'm looking forward to the full version of the game.

And I agree. I read enough vague comments about the demo to know that the megalodon is not something to mess with, but I wasn't ready to be attacked suddenly from behind (despite thinking I was). The anticipation was the worst part.

Today I checked out VR Typing Trainer for the first time. I read some comments here about how it's a pretty interesting use of VR, and it is. It's the first thing virtual reality application I've tried that is useful in teaching a real skill: how to type blind. I'm a fast and accurate typer, but I need to see what I'm doing often to not mess up.

You're transported into a Tron-like world and have words and letters coming toward your face. You use your head to aim the reticle over the words, and then type them out to make them explode. You can fail up to five times before it's game over. I think my highest score in the video I made covering it was only 37, but I feel with practice that could improve, and I'll be learning a real skill at the same time. Pretty cool!

Man, my experiences with the DK2 thus far have been so much better than with the DK1, and there's still so much stuff to play.

Already read it and it's just empty words to me, he fucked it up massively time after time.
That's just damage control so he doesn't lose a source of income and I wouldn't spend even a cent on his apps.

I mean, jesus christ, just that 2 weeks download limit for a purchase and not even stating that in the terms?
How does one even think about such a anti-consumer thing without being a greedy scum?
I'd suggest to try find the threads where he fucked up and about what (there are a bunch of them) and see for yourself if you really believe that.

I keep wishing I could just hang out in that world and walk around without playing the typing game. I wonder how long it will be before someone recreates entire scenes from that movie. That would be a dream come true for me.

I had/have no knowledge of this supposed drama, but yea, I wouldn't touch this guy or any of his work with a 10' pole. He seems to be legit mentally unstable, as demonstrated by his irrational and illogical terms/behavior. I wouldn't trust him with any of my information at all and I have serious concerns for anyone that has given him names, email, or paypal details. A 2 week DL window on purchased content is completely unfathomable given the non-existent cost of distributing apps of this size--regardless of whether it was or wasn't stated in terms (though it's 100x worse if it was not and he still refused a single customers request). Severe red flags here, and I'd even go so far as to say it's irresponsible for trusted communities like Neogaf or Reddit to even reference, list, or link to this guys apps.
