The Expendabros released on Steam - FREE!

Will you keep it in your library like a normal free to play game? Looks good!

F2P games on Steam only remain in your library upon being uninstalled if you own DLC for them. It's something I wish Valve would extend to the Free on Demand system it now uses for free titles (and as of very recently also demos, which is probably a precursor to older free content being moved over as well) as clicking the "Play" button adds a removable licence to your account -- you own the games until you decide that you no longer want to.

Edit: To clarify the "free to download until ..." thing:
Uninstalling a Free on Demand game doesn't revoke the licence that's added to your account upon clicking the "Play" button. As long as you haven't gone to your account page and clicked "Remove", the install link will still work even after the FoD sub has been yanked from the store.

Cool idea from the Expendables marketing department, imo.

I'm seeing some fun additions (cutscenes, new bosses, new characters, new physic interactions) that I hope get folded into the main game eventually.

I dunno what I'm doing wrong but I can't beat the final? big mech boss. Half the time I lose a bro during the cutscene because of one of the guys just shooting me while I can't control myself, but every time the mech just takes no apparent damage and I eventually can't dodge any more.

Just curious, if the game does not appear in your library, and gets removed from the store, how would you go about accessing it?

Wow this is great marketing. Pretty cool that they had the sense of humor to support the people behind Broforce. Some stick in the mud types might have felt otherwise about the parody nature and likeness usage that game does.

Those are some pretty cringeworthy character names, even if they are satirical. But sincer this is from the BroForce developers, they have my attention.

Makes me wonder what happened to DudeBro?

It's not ideal, but logging into SteamDB and accessing the game's listing will give you an install link:

I expect Valve to eventually modify the behaviour of FoD games such that they attach to user libraries, though (i.e. they stick around even when uninstalled), and this could very well happen before the end of the year.

Performance sucks on this game.

With v-sync enabled it judders at points for no clear reason while disabling it results in constant tearing. Frustrating.

Yeah, the game is fun but it's very very buggy.

I got about 20fps on the 4th level, the controller config screen is jacked, and reset to defaults does nothing.

Absolute piss take, everyone gets this better version of the game for free while fans paid to beta test the full game.

Does this game play like broforce? it appears so from the trailer, but I haven't played broforce to spot more subtle differences.

Is this really the superior version? Are there more characters than vanilla broforce or something?

There's probably a few less than the total characters in BroForce, but it has a more fleshed out story and the funny QTE sections that I've never seen in BroForce. Just feels like a proper fuck you to us who paid when I could have got the same content from this free game.

This has a fraction of the levels and content of Broforce, this is neat, but it's more a demo for the real game than anything else.

And I'm sure that the improvements we're seeing here will make their way to the main client as well.

Shoot out the bottom of the mech, it's two or three cubes until you get the one the villain is standing on, he'll fall down onto your level and you can finish him off MANO A MANO.

Played a bit, it's fun but now I want a new Metal Slug game, SNK please! It can be an eShop only on my 3DS, I don't mind as long as it has multiplayer.

They have flat out said this. From the Broforce thread:

Just by the way. I'm going to write a proper post mortem on Expendabros when I have time.

But we weren't paid to make the Expendabros. Lionsgate approached us and asked if we'd like to make a Broforce tie in for Expendables 3, with actual licensed Expendables characters, and we couldn't say "no". It is a bit of a cross promotional thing, and I have no idea of whether it'll lead to more people playing Broforce, but mostly it was just a really cool thing for us to try do.

Of course Broforce began a little while after Expendables 1, and obviously was pretty heavily influenced by the movie. Coming full circle and making a game for them was pretty surreal, and really exciting.

So the value of Expendabros for us is
A) Having a cool little demo for Broforce.
B) Having an opportunity to experiment with some story telling and learn about how good/bad we are at it.
C) Dolf Lungren said the word "Broforce", in real life.

We're going to put most of the work we did for Expendabros into Broforce proper in an update. We're feeling really behind schedule in our Broforce updates.

The game seems to be DRM-free (you can run it without Steam). So even if they remove it from Steam, you can make a backup of it and play it after it's gone (I think).

I guess that's one way of looking at it...

People should really give it a go. It serves as a great demo for the full game and it's a blast to play!

Somewhat unrelated, but what is free on demand, or more specifically the distinction between that and f2p?

Beat it last night. It's fun and the way the characters translate to a game is clever. But I couldn't find a V Sync option and this game really needed it on a couple of stages, which is disappointing.

Having similar issues. Lowering the resolution doesn't help performance either.

The controller config screen is messed up for me too.

damn that game is awesome, i had never tried broforce before
there's so much good stuff in early access that wish that would come out now, broforce, the forest, assault android cactus, nuclear throne and crypt of the necrodancer

Basically, there are three (well, two now) options for distributing free content on Steam:

1) Add it to sub 0 (deprecated)
Sub 0 is a package that is automagically granted to all Steam accounts, but you don't own the games as far as Steam's game count figure is concerned. Content obtained in this manner is only tethered to your library (i.e. sticks around even when uninstalled and thus follows you between systems) if you own DLC for it, but even in these cases Steam still doesn't count them as "owned" games.

Valve didn't wall off sub 0 until a couple of months ago, so most of the F2P games on Steam exist in it and therefore function as I described above. That being said, Valve has almost finished moving all game demos out of the sub and into their own Free on Demand subs, which I think is a precursor to it doing the same with the F2P/freeware stuff.

2) Add it to a No Cost sub (rarely used, will presumably be phased out in favour of #3)
These packages essentially allow you to buy content at no cost -- clicking "Install" binds the game/DLC to your account in exactly the same manner as it would be if you'd gone through Steam's checkout process and paid money for it. Needless to say, unlike #1, Steam considers content obtained in the manner as owned (i.e. it's tethered to your library and your game/DLC count goes up).

No Cost subs are generally used for free DLC and limited-time promos (e.g. the L4D2 giveaway during last year's Winter Sale), but a few free games/pieces of software use them, too.

3) Add it to a Free on Demand sub (the new kid on the block that's replaced #1 and will, presumably, also replace #2 in due time)
Free on Demand packages, at least at present, are something of a combination of #1 and #2. Clicking "Play" will add a licence to your account (so your game/DLC count goes up), which can be voluntarily revoked from your account page, however like #1, games obtained in this manner aren't tethered to your library unless you own DLC for them (which is something I hope Valve changes eventually).

Free on Demand subs have basically replaced sub 0 as the default option, so all of the F2P games on Steam released since June use them.

Shoot out the bottom of the mech, it's two or three cubes until you get the one the villain is standing on, he'll fall down onto your level and you can finish him off MANO A MANO.

Different boss - mech I'm thinking of falls from the sky, jumps around with machine guns and rockets firing.

You seems to come into various threads I've seen and just be a complainer all the time. This is a waaaaay limited demo without online and lacking in content. Find a real reason to complain man.; it's just sad.

Broforce is fun, but the current alpha is still very alpha. However, I think it can be a good fun 4 player coop for some evenings.

This boss took me a few tries. There are a bunch of bros you can save during the level and you want to get them all, because this guy will kill you. If you get Doctor Death (the Wesley Snipes one) you are actually totally in the money despite the seeming gap in logic -- if you stand next to him and wail on the boss with your blades, you'll take some huge chunks off his health, and he can't hit you with some of his weapons. Before he fires at you, a red box will show up over whatever weapon the boss will use. The rockets mean you need to get some distance (as does the boss jumping) but if he uses the low-to-the-ground turrets, just hit him from the other side with everything you've got while he fires at nothing.

If you are anyone else, try to keep your distance and pelt him with your grenades. Once you're out of grenades, try to get another locked-up bro or take the boss on with caution. The boss is tough but Wesley Snipes will save the day!

Thanks for the heads up, OP. Will download, have always found BroForce a bit pricey but I'm down for a demo tie-in.

Totally agreed. This is a small sample but just as buggy. However judging by the forums this is selling lots of real full game Broforces so I guess mission accomplished.

Edit:
I do think Broforce is great just pointing out the obvious. And the support has been superb with fixes thus far.

yeah weird it's almost like Broforce isn't finished or an early access game or anything.

This free release takes a game I never would have taken a serious look at (Broforce looks fine, but I'm overwhelmed with games to play) and makes me re-think that.

This was a smart move, IMO.

Aw thanks for noticing me, am I meant to care?

Yeh this free game feels more finished than Broforce and yet it's free.

Makes sense, they want this to act as a demo for Broforce, obviously they'd want it to look as polished and "finished" as possible to reflect what Broforce will eventually become when it leaves early access. It's also built on the work they've already done for Broforce and is experimenting with ideas they weren't sure if they wanted to add to the proper game.

Bugs aside, I had fun with the "demo"/game. Not $15 fun, but if BroForce reaches $5-10 level, I'll consider picking it up. So, nice move on Devolver/Lionsgate part to do cross-promotion with each other.
