Super Smash Bros. for 3DS & Wii U Thread XI: Where 90% correct equals 100% wrong

Woah. Nothing like what we thought. Super disappointed that Counter is a default. Wild that she has reflect and counter as defaults.
She seems like a defense-oriented, slow-moving power character. She can warp away, set up a force field, counter-attack, create floor-to-ceiling light pillars (her up-smash), and she appears to hit hard but run at a trot...

Not sure if I can link to it here, but you can check out the scans on Smashboards. Here's her moveset:

B: Autoreticle
B(2): Explosive Flame
B(3): Divine Light

UpB: Teleport
UpB(2): Jump Glide
UpB(3): Rocket Jump

DownB: Counter
DownB(2): Lighten
DownB(3): Fireworks

SideB: Reflect Barrier
SideB(2): Super Dash
SideB(3): Angelic Missile

Final Smash: Black Hole + Mega Laser

Here are the next 13 PotDs.

I wonder how Palutena will work online. They aren't allowing Miis, possibly due to customizable movesets, but Palutena is just as unpredictable.

Wow, and hyrule warriors Ganondorf dual wields swords.

She seems like a defense-oriented, slow-moving power character. She can warp away, set up a force field, counter-attack, create floor-to-ceiling light pillars (her up-smash), and she appears to hit hard but run at a trot...
Also, her attacks have a ton of range.

Friends, let us talk about the upcoming character reveal we don't deserve, but the one that we need.

No, not Shulk.

Not the Chorus Kids either.

This little guy

Believe.

Most of those sound pretty self-explanatory, but I don't suppose there's any description of them, is there? I'm curious about Lighten and Fireworks.

Lighten: Lightens her body and speeds up. However, damage she receives increases and it's easier to be sent flying.

Fireworks: An attack where she launches beautiful fireworks skyward. She is invulnerable for a brief moment when she fires them.

Bomberman '93 on the Wii VC would be an excellent place to start. Bomberman 64 is also fantastic, but more for its epic single-player campaign than its multiplayer (I still love the multiplayer, but the multi-tiered level design is not "classic" style, so to speak). I'm probably most nostalgic for B64. Just listen to the music!

After you try those two, you can start experimenting with quirkier (but totally worthwhile!) fare like Bomberman Hero, which introduced more of a platforming element.

Bomberman is such an awesome series.
Blue Resort is one of my favorite songs of that era. It just stands out above all the rest and gives me the strongest nostalgia. I loved that game and I remember freaking out when I discovered that rotating the control stick caused bombs to enlarge. I also spent a lot of time playing Bomberman Tournament.

Would you be so gracious as to translate them all? :)

They'll just restrict you to her default moves, like with everyone else when playing online. So in this case: Auto-Reticule, Teleport, Reflect Barrier and Counter.

Ugh why are all the counter moves the defaults? Boo-urns :(

Hopefully custom moves are super easy and quick to switch around on CS

Most of those sound pretty self-explanatory, but I don't suppose there's any description of them, is there? I'm curious about Lighten and Fireworks.

Given what's out there an translated so far:

Lightweight: Lightens her body and increases her speed. She takes more damage from enemy attacks and is easier to knock away though.

Fireworks: Launches fireworks upward. Has brief invulnerability on startup

Final Smash: Black Hole + Mega Laser

I guess that's what Sakurai meant when he said each of Palutena's specials were different. They change her playstyle dramatically.

Just like in Kid Icarus: Uprising.

I didn't translate them. I'll be happy to post the translations, though.

Neutral Special Attack
Auto Aim: She automatically locks onto the opponent in front of her. After that, a rapid volley of 3 shots fire towards the opponent from her staff.
Explosive Flame: An explosion suddenly occurs in an area near her. The explosion expands and deals steady damage to the opponents caught up in it.
Divine Light: A special attack that makes a curtain of light shine on her surroundings. If the button is continuously pushed, the attack duration lengthens.

Side Special Attack
Reflect Barrier: Makes a mysterious wall appear in front of her that reflects projectiles. As the wall goes forward, it pushes any opponent it contacts along with it.
Human Missile: She launches herself toward the opponent while spinning. The opponent is sent flying when struck.
Super Dash: Moves at high speed and sends opponents flying when they get hit. She can do dash attacks or jump during this move, too.

Upward Special Attack
Teleport: She can warp in any direction she pleases. She cannot attack nor be harmed during the move. Can be used to evade enemy attacks or simply for movement.
Glider Jump: Glides after jumping, and can go great distances horizontally. She can change direction as well as attack during this move, too.
Rocket Jump: Jumps while creating an explosion. While her own jump height is low, it has the ability to launch the opponents great distances.

Downward Special Attack
Counter: She sets up a shield that takes the opponent's attack and then counterattacks. If attacked while the shield is set, the shield defends, and immediately retaliates afterward.
Lighten: Lightens her body and speeds up. However, damage she receives increases and it's easier to be sent flying.
Fireworks: An attack where she launches beautiful fireworks skyward. She is invulnerable for a brief moment when she fires them.

Final Smash
Black Hole + Mega Beam: A Merciless attack that doesn't fight the Goddess at all?! It draws everything in! A massive black hole appears before one's eyes and draws opponents in. A mega laser beam is fired in their direction from her staff. Power expected from a goddess.

Palutena is basically a tank. Huge range on her up-smash that walls off everyone from floor to ceiling; impenetrable force fields; a counter-attack; the ability to disappear and reappear across great distances... which compensates for her slow run speed. She appears to be a power character, so I guess the idea is to control the space around her, hit hard, retreat into a defensive posture, rinse wash repeat.

What hobbies do you know that spend more than $300 a year? Yacht clubs? I...I don't think those count.
Here are a few popular ones that come to mind:

Gym
Gambling
Watching TV
Sports tickets
Hunting
Camping
Martial arts
Bar drinking
Playing (most) musical instruments

Makes ya wonder if she'll be this game's Metaknight :P

I'm not sure I see what you see, but I will say that if I have to fight the gorgeous green-haired goddess every other match, I won't complain too much

Should have quoted but your first five words...Palutena indeed seems to be a force to be reckoned with so far, a very powerful character, to the point where I wouldn't be surprised if she ends up as one of the game's overall best, even -the- number one, a lá Metaknight. But who knows, won't recognize it for sure until we actually play as her. The potential is definitely there, I think even more so with her unique customizable Specials.

From Smashboards:

Neutral B
-Autoreticle (default): We know it shoots 3 projectiles, but now it auto-targets the opponent in front of her. Seems great when the enemy is either using a laggy move or when he/she has to recover in Paluten's direction horizontally.
-Explosive Flame: Small area denial it seems. It could put the hurting on spot dodgers it looks like if it can also pierce through or badly damage shields.
-Heavenly Light: The amazing long-ranged move that doesn't make opponents flinch. Now we know that we can increase the move's duration by constantly pressing B, like Pit's Angel Ring in Brawl.

Side B
-Reflect Barrier (default): Simply a reflector that also pushes opponents on contact as it moves forward. We pretty much know all of this from the trailer.
-Angelic Missile: A powerful spinning headbutt move. We can assume Palutena will be vulnerable if she misses.
-Super Speed: We know that she can damage players that she rams into with it, but now we know that she can use dash attack and jump during the move as well.

Down B
-Counter (default): Another typical counter move, but she's using her shield for it.
-Lightweight: Improves her speed, but takes more damage and gets knocked back further than usual if she gets hit.
-Celestial Firework: Does damage and definitely gives her invincibility frames like it does for Pit in Uprising.

Up B
-Warp (default): Can be used as a recovery, mobility, or to avoid attacks, a faster non-damaging Farore's Wind if you will.
-Jump Glide: Jumps first and then glides. We now know that she change directions, and even attack during the move as well, making her less vulnerable than some of us thought.
-Rocket Jump: Small height for a recovery, but also very powerful.

Man Palutena's defaults are so boring. A counter, AND a reflect AND a teleport. Zzzzzzz.

Though are customised moves allowed online in for fun mode? That'll be alright if so because that's probably what I'll play most of the time.

All I can say about default Palutena moveset is that I'm

giphy.gif

Again my hope is that changing around custom moves is super easy and quick to do. I want to Angelic Missile all you fools :P

D1 seemed pretty convinced Palutena would be awesome just from analyzing her trailer. We'll see how far nepotism gets her :P

Only 27 more POTDs until the game comes out. I can't wait! My local 7-11 just started putting posters up so I decided to preoreder there today. :)

actually my initial reactions to palutena's moveset was kinda....ehh at best but thinking about it she was kinda like that in uprising as well
she moved and dodged a lot and try to get quick hits with projectiles to get in close and used warp to get out quickly

as neiteio said i do think shes going to be one of those power types (at least with the default moveset) that relies on some smart play to get going (since her running speed and walking speed is extremely slow)

and i also think counter sucks as the standard i wish it was lighten instead lol

Anyone who played Uprising knows Sakurai absolutely adores Palutena. It was plainly evident with every twist and turn of the plot. I'm sure Sakurai wouldn't mess up his own character. (Well, technically someone else's character, originally, but may as well be his character now.)

Reading that huge archive of the Brawl Dojo, this Sakurai quote seems interesting:

If one game sells 40,000 copies and another one sells 20,000 copies, then one sold twice as much as another, right? But if you work for a company, this isn't reflected much in your salary. No matter if your game sells or not, you'll get money deposited in the bank every month on the month, so sometimes you see cases where developers get indifferent towards money and lose the feeling that they're really earning what they make. On the other hand, gamers take money out of their wallets and use it to buy your game. This difference is making gamers and developers drift farther and farther away from each other.

I talked with different people from around the industry about this, and it always seemed like the people who understood what gamers want the most are the guys in sales or the guys working in the stores. But isn't that messed up? It's completely messed up that the people actually making the games are the farthest away from what gamers want. I want to do something about that. I'm not saying I want to change the game industry or anything huge like that, but I just want to do something.

Wonder if that's why he decided to do the PotD where people can comment on every update he makes. Also, it'd explain the reps asking for feedback in E3 with the Smash demos. It seems that despite what some people want to believe, he does listen to the fanbase.

Unrelated, but if I had a lot of free time I'd love to read the reactions to megatons in that Brawl thread, like newcomers and new modes. It must have been awesome.

I'm not sure if I'll be surprised or not if Viridi doesn't have a bigger appearance than her stage.

Watching TV counts as a hobby? I guess it could. Though if we were to really measure this it'd be in long term rather than short term, as some equipment for these hobbies are going to last a lot longer than a 4-5 year gaming generation.

We can however conclude that life is expensive.
And Smash is totally going to make us all broke in the long run.

Sakurai's commitment, that of pouring his soul in every release for the sake of gamers, will forever make me respect the man. You always see him reflecting on the game industry, on how to best approach something so it'll appeal to as many as possible. He really lives and breathes this, it's not just a business for him, it's a way of life. And for that, I love him.

Looking at the list of newcomers, I like that they're almost all 'modern Nintendo'.

You've got Mii's and Wii Fit Trainer, an Animal Crossing rep, a modern Pokemon rep, two modern Fire Emblem reps, Palutena to rep the Kid Icarus revival, Rosalina as a modern Mario character, and if rumours are true we've got Shulk and Chorus Men too.

It's just Little Mac (who could be seen as a modern character anyway with the Wii game and all) and the third parties showing off the more retro side of Smash.

Brawl was very different as Melee was still lacking major characters like Wario, Diddy Kong, Dedede, Meta Knight, and Pokemon Trainer/Charizard.

The only characters in that vein left are Ridley and K Rool really, and Mewtwo coming back.

I like it tbh.

Sakurai is a legit gamer, through and through. How many Nintendo devs do you know who write about their Dark Souls playthrough?

...who is this? I need to add them to the Excel sheet so I can add them to my giant roster of ultimate Smash Bros. but even Google can't help me with this one.

Still organizing characters for the moment if anyone wants to suggest some more.

It's Spotto! :)

DSiWare game by Intelligent Systems. Super cute, addictive, and made by a Nintendo subsidiary, so it's not outside the realm of possibility..
