Those old TR games were janky even at the time.

So janky.

I went back to Tomb Raider recently and thought it was a lot better than I gave it credit for. I really didn't like the series originally (mostly because of people like Dan who played it to get a better view of her boobs...I was a weird 10 year old), but when I gave it a chance a couple years back I realized it's actually a really well made challenging 3D platformer with very accurate, though pretty unique, controls.

edit: See above gif for an example.

I also really, really, really hate (hate) the new Tomb Raider, so maybe I'm a weird 30 year old.

TR 2013 was a better Uncharted game than Uncharted 3, but TR Anniversary is the best game in the series. They updated the controls and the graphics while still keeping most of the puzzles, platforming and exploration that made the original game so memorable.

St Francis' Folly remains one of the best videogame levels ever designed.

Edit - one more TR thing; the soundtrack is one of the best of the PS1 era. Absolutely superb stuff.

I loved the original Tomb Raider on PS1. It had a very specific methodical pace because traversal was all about proper spacing and utilizing the precise right maneuver at the right time. The combat was awful but it was such a small part of the game. There was nothing really like it and compared to other 3D PS1 games, it aged pretty damn well.

Well that's certainly a bunch of spoilers for my ongoing MGS playthrough in the Demo Derby video. Somehow I'd managed to avoid most of that stuff, though I did know
Solid was Big Boss' clone
.

That's not a spoiler. That information was revealed in the original MSX games. Pretty sure it was even mentioned in the data files you can access from the main menu of MGS.

The whole who's who thing is what confused me the most about the series as someone who only played MGS. So basically the dude I played on the PS1 isn't the guy who is in all the recent shit and the upcoming game? There is no one central 'Sam Fisher' equivalent?

You play as Solid snake in MG, MG2, MGS, MGS2 (only the tanker section, then you play Raiden) and MGS4. You play as Naked Snake aka Big Boss in all the other ones.

There are two (well, three but we'll keep it to two for now) protagonists in the series:

In the prequels, you play as big boss, the guy solid snake was cloned from.

In the games that aren't prequels, you play as solid snake.

Gotcha. Do those two ever meet and hang out in the games? Is the prequel dude like a father figure or is there more animosity?

They are not buddies. In MG Solid was sent on a mission only to find out that Big Boss the leader of his unit (FOXHOUND) is behind all that shit himself. In MG2 Solid kills Big Boss.

The whole idea of the prequels is to show us how a "hero" like Big Boss became a villain.

"Whoa that pizza box just blew up into tiny pizza slices! Also known as triangles."

Already this Demo Derby vid is the best thing ever.

It's weird to think about online play in context with services like PS Now. Lets say they put up Warhawk, "Wait shit, we turned off the servers for that...". Do they bring them back up or say "No warhawk for you"?

Man, rewatching that Q&A thing with Karen was so sad. It took them close to two years to get what they've been wanting since the start. MAN.

Boy, am I ever excited to actually have an MGS fan on the staff now. The closest before was Brad, and that is not saying much. The instant and closed mind derision the rest have for the series had gotten kind of old.

Glad Drew is open minded about it. But I always bet on Drew.

The psp port of Medievil isnt the ideal way to play the game. The game was more or less the same with prettier graphics from what I played of it, but (at least for the opening levels) the game constantly stopped for long unskippable cutscenes.

EDIT- Wow they couldnt have picked a worse level to demo Crash 3 Warped with

Isn't Jeff a big fan?

Man the demo derby is great and I hope they do it regularly, it seems like a pretty easy feature to put together until they run out.

Jeff likes 2 and 4 quite a bit, Patrick liked 1 and 3 a lot

Dan is just one of the big mgs fans who actually care about the dumb lore in em all
