Super Smash Bros. for 3DS & Wii U Thread 12: Gwah, hah. Welcome to the Bowser's game.

1. Favorite characters you don't find fun to play as:

Diddy Kong is the big one for me. DKC2 is one of my favorite games of all time, and I've always loved using him in whatever spinoffs he's included in, but his Smash version just doesn't feel good to me. A bit too technical, I think, for my tastes, and a lot of his moves just lack that satisfying "pop" of a solid hit.

Ganondorf is another; love the guy to death, but he's way too slow for my tastes. I do like using him in Project M, though, so I think it's more because he's not very good, as opposed to anything fundamental.

2. Favorite playstyles on characters you just find "meh":

Wario for sure. I don't really like Wario at all - in fact, I'd say I dislike him. But he's SO much fun to play. Very wacky, very strong, not too slow, really satisfying to connect with him... the list goes on. I even like his Project M variation, despite the major changes.

3. Characters you already love with playstyles you enjoy:

Toon Link! Zelda is my favorite series of all time, and while Link has always been a disappointment, Toon Link is a ton of fun to use. He's quick and nimble but still has good "pop" on a lot of his attacks. I'm the sort of guy that's tempted to try risky spikes, though, which never works out and tends to make me pretty bad with him.

4. Characters you grew to love in general because of their Smash inclusion:

Doc! I never really liked Mario in spinoffs, and even though I love his playstyle in Smash, I'm still not a big fan in general. But Dr. Mario? He's the best! The coat, the mirror, the general randomness of his appearance, it's all great. Definitely a redundant character, I'll admit, but I can't help but hold out hope he'll return for Smash 4...

I really, really hope Famitsu's weekly column covers Mega Man soon. I'm itching to know what his custom specials are.

I was playing through Mega Man 5 on the Wii U Virtual Console yesterday, and it dawned on me that the weird-ass Rush Coil from that game (where Rush's whole body springs up and then you have to jump off of him to get maximum height) could work as a custom up special for Mega Man where it's a little harder/more awkward to use, but gets you more height/recovery distance than the standard Rush Coil if you use it right.

The newcomers Famitsu still has yet to cover at this point are Villager, Mega Man, Greninja, the Mii Fighters, and Pac-Man... so I guess I might have to wait awhile longer yet. :(

Hey Ash, this may sound crazy but I get the impression you might possibly be a fan of the Mega Man series.

Now what could possibly have given you that idea? ;)

Seriously, though! His custom specials are the only remaining thing we don't know about him. After that, I can just chill back and wait until I can play as him again in the 3DS version...

Ha, I'm interested to see what they are, too. It'd be cool if they were new moves altogether, referencing even more of the MM series than he already does, but if I recall correctly, only Palutena and Mii Fighters have custom options that are completely different, whereas everyone else has modified versions of existing moves. So yeah, your idea of the jumping Rush Coil seems plausible. :-)

you're such a liar, it's obviously Ridley-X and Meta Ridley

Shit

Heath was my source I swear.

How many Amiibos would you guys buy for Smash?

5, maybe? Just enough to get my favorites.

I suddenly feel like revisiting my Animal Crossing town, but I'm not sure I want to spend the next two hours pulling weeds

I don't think New Leaf puts too many there.

And if you were smart and used beautiful town ordinance you'll barely have any at all.
(= v =)

My brain says "only a few" but my heart says "ALL OF THEM!" D:

If this game ends up with a 50-60 character roster then this on top of the new Pokémon Center website will deal a ferocious blow to my bank account over the next few months.

I remember I'd usually switch to the Beautiful Town ordinance when I anticipated not playing for a while, but it's possible I might've kept it a late-night town last I played :-\

I actually posted awhile back hoping for that very same thing! It'd be neat if his custom specials used different weapon visuals in addition to having different properties/effects. For example, the Drill Bomb or Flash Grenade for custom Crash Bomber, the Laser Trident or Shadow Blade for custom Metal Blade, and two of the five million shield weapons in the series for custom Leaf Shield...

Okay, I really need to stop. All this speculation is killing me!

Ha, I only started playing Mega Man when he was announced back at E3 2013. I downloaded MM2 for the 3DS VC and was amazed at how fresh it feels. Game has aged extremely well. But I haven't gotten to the rest of the series yet, so your examples are flying over my head, lol.

That could work. Then I guess the third version could just be Beat carrying you or whatever.

EDIT: The existence of a Koopa Clown Car trophy doesn't deconfirm Bowser Jr. any more than Vacuum Luigi would've deconfirmed Luigi.

Based upon how most characters alt specials are I imagine Mega Man's will be something like

B. Metal Blade
B2. Flaming Metal Blade (flies slower does more damage)
B3. Mini Metal Blade (flies faster deals less damage

B>. Crash Bomber
B>2. Big Explosion Crash Bomber (has a longer timer, has a bigger blast radius to hit multiple targets)
B>3. Quick Crash Bomber (shorter timer, smaller blast radius, deals less damage)

B^. Rush Coil
B^2. Jump Rush Coil (Rush himself jumps up with you, less range but you can do ground attacks on it)
B^3. Super Rush Coil (Mega Man blasts off Rush damaging anyone he touches, falls prone)

BV. Leaf Shield
BV2. Speed Leaf Shield (shoots faster, absorbs less damage before breaking)
BV3. Super Leaf Shield (shoots slower, absorbs more damage)

Expect that general concept to be true for most characters alternate specials

Either her or Marth are going to have an alt set that will basically make them Roy in terms of specials :P

I'd rather just get a seperate Roy. I still think there's a chance, actually.

All will look the same, but have different damage/knockback properties. Laziest clone!

No, seriously, all alt specials will look the same for almost everyone except palu/mii

One of Captain Falcon's side B or Up B customs looks fairly different, iirc. Was part of a screenshot dump and not POTD though.

How many Amiibos would you guys buy for Smash?

All of them, probably.
Definitely all of the Pokemon characters + my mains throughout the series (Ganondorf, Wolf, R.O.B., probably Megaman).

Yep, Mega Man 2 is a classic, straight up. It's the popular favorite... but it's not actually my favorite, haha. That honor goes to MM 5, because even though it's too easy IMO, it's got the best music and graphics of anything on the NES (including MM 6, even though it came after) and it's got some of my favorite level designs in the series. It just feels really inspired to me, but that's definitely not the popular opinion.

If you enjoyed 2 but aren't sure you're sold on the entire series (which would be understandable), you should definitely at least check out 3 and 5.

And you've probably heard this from other people, but if you also never played the Mega Man X games back in the day... go download and play the original Mega Man X right the hell now. Mega Man fan or not, it's one of very best 2D platformers and most well-designed games of all time. It's just sublime.

Is the PSP version of Mega Man X a huge downgrade from Mega Man X? I can't say I'm the biggest fan of what I've played of that, though I haven't played the original Mega Man X.

I see it's already been clarified, but here is the image from the direct

Still pretty ludicrous how many trophies are in there. By my count, over 100 from this pic alone. Can anybody identify, the one between Pete and SonicBooker & Cooper (Animal Crossing), between Charizard and Wiggler Pave (Animal Crossing), one in front of DK White Pikmin, one inbetween Steel Diver and Moltres Stalfos (Zelda)or the one behind conductor link (and spirit train) and Bulborb
Edit: notice a few more unidentified trophies
one behind Gyroid (Maybe the Great Deku tree), and one between the Gyroid and Twinrova

GOING TO REDEEM MYSELF

I believe the one between Pete and Sonic are Copper & Booker from Animal Crossing.
