All right Weekend Smash, I'm bored and trapped indoors by stormy weather, so let's have some fun. Here's one for you: using series created in 2000 or later, outline your ideal Smash Bros. roster.

The problem of more recent characters to include in Smash is one that always seems to come up, with only 13 characters in the 50+ overall series roster created later than 2000, and most of those come from pre-2000 series like Fire Emblem and Pokemon. So, pretend Nintendo from the 20th Century doesn't exist, and see what you could imagine Smash Bros looking like now.

General rules:
  • Characters must come from games/game series created in 2000 or later.
  • Spin-offs are OK, reasonably speaking. Good = WarioWare, bad = Mario Tennis
  • Pre-2000 series introduced into the US/EU post-2000 are cool, like Animal Crossing and Fire Emblem, are cool, but you've got to use characters post-2000. So no Marth, and no Tom Nook.
  • Minimum of 26 characters (as in Melee), maximum of 37 (as in Brawl).
  • Maximum of 4 characters per series to avoid making a Fire Emblem fighting game.
  • You can have up to 6 third-party characters, but as per Smash Bros tradition, only 1 character per third-party franchise.
  • Clones are fine.

I just thought of the idea, so I'm still thinking of my list still. Figure it might spark some creative suggestions in you guys though!
plus if no-one cares I don't wanna post a big list everyone ignores

I'll stick with the minimum

That Mumbo was and still is expensive, but I can't even find that Banjo anywhere. I've not seen one pop up on eBay at all.

The Mumbo one is seriously expensive? I actually have one of those in my closet somewhere! Didn't know it was rare.

:P

I check eBay from time to time for them and have never seen Banjo ever! Mumbo pops in on occasion (there's one now). BD&A made the best Ninty merch.

Miss me? 'Course ya do.

Here's last week's watermarkless images (can't be bothered to sort through the thousands of posts SmashGAF puts out to see if they were posted, so nyeh):

The annoying thing about Thursday's clean image is that it's only half of the actual pic! :(

Just noticed that we got 3 3DS & 2 Wii U pics this week. Have we ever had more 3DS pics than Wii U pics in a week before? Or is this a first? Is it a sign that we'll be focusing on the 3DS version more and more as we get closer to that version's launch, possibly with the last couple of weeks being entirely 3DS?

I think it's a fair assumption that Nintendo will focus on the 3DS version more as we near its release, including with Sakurai's PotD.

The last three weeks have all had more 3DS pics than Wii U ones. And yeah, I'm sure Sakurai's gearing up for the 3DS launch. I'd expect the majority of pics to be from the 3DS from here on out, at least until the Japanese release. I'd bet the first week or two after the release will be 3DS heavy, too.

Can anyone post the text for the Friday POTD? I never saw any.

First Post: "Pic of the day. '♪Ba-ding!♪'"

Second Post: "If you turn on the 3D effect, it really looks like there's a Game Boy inside the screen."

Edit: Beaten

Also: Gotta love how Sakurai explaining so little confused everyone.

If you turn on the 3D effect, it really looks like there's a Game Boy inside the screen.

Thank you!

Just imagine how much Sakurai will confuse people when he shows Ridley. "Oh look, it's Ridley! How nice that he shows up in the game!"

Problem is that people are wise enough at this point to realize that if a potential newcomer makes their first appearance in a PotD, they've almost certainly been Assist Trophy'd/Pokeball'd/Stage Boss'd/etc. Now if he did it with Lucas...

That's exactly why Sakurai always elaborate with assist trophies for those updates, like FYI, I'm an assist trophy, so people wouldn't get confused :P

If I were Sakurai, that expectation is exactly why I would reveal Ridley as a character in a POTD.

If I was Sakurai, I'd reveal all newcomers and veterans as trophies first and start introducing items of their series in random PotDs without focusing on them at all.

i dont think sakurai writes the english one

i think there may be someone doing it for him

I'm pretty sure a statement that they are ATs are in the original Japanese, but yeah, they're translated into English by someone else with a certain level of embellishment. (ex. the "Real Men use items" from the Dojo era was not present at all in the original Japanese.)

then why are we relying on the english updates when we could be reading into the japanese ones

Because it's basically the same info.

Lip knows. She knows already.
dECk8WD.png
She knows she won't even get a trophy, nevermind playable. All Lip's ever going to get is her stick :o

~new gen roster list~
I'll leave the roster making to others, but the amount of Ashley and Inkling in people's lists makes me happy. Extra points to Kyzon for the 'other' Ashley being in there too, though heck knows what her movelist could ever be XD

Mega_Lopunny.png

I want it in Smash Bros.

The Chun-Li of Pokémon.
I've always wanted a lopunny in my team because they're pretty but they're not great usage-wise unless you fancy using one with 'Klutz' to transfer nasty items to people's key pokes. The mega will make her more useful but the single mega limit kinda kills it for me I just can't see myself using anything other than Mawile or Diancie for my mega because they're so unbelievably badass AND actually decent pokemon in mega form :o

That's my main issue with megas... some of the pokes getting them would've been better off with an extra normal evo added because I can't see anybody taking a normal mawile or lopunny with them unless they're a major fan of their aesthetic design or something :/

In 99% of cases the translation of Sakurai's quotes is pretty much spot on, there's nothing worth finding in the original Japanese version that isn't there in the translated version.

Any chance of the second images watermarkless (specialy the trophy shop) ?

Looking back that was an awesome week !
Underground Nintendo character, Willy and Gameboy =D

My Japanese isn't fluent, & I don't think many of the others can even read it at all. Plus Google Translate has a tendency to botch the translation.
