Cops shoot and kill man holding toy gun in Walmart

I wonder how much paid vacation time the piece of festering shit would get.

I'm really sorry to bring up comparisons with other countries but the last time the police here gunned down a person, there was a MASSIVE inquiry and media scandal. The fact that I see this week to week is very unsettling and disheartening.

That's my feelings about it too and other things going on internationally. Stupid shit like this happens so often, it feels normal. Which is such a terrible feeling.

So fucking true and so very sick of this shit. There is no law for us, its just up to police to shoot us or not. No matter what 'law' is being broken. Its just a 50/50 shot at this point.

and on top of that, most of the nation will always buy the story of us clearly needing to be put down like an animal.
 
With this whole "waving the gun around and scaring people" bit I feel like since he was on the phone he was probably paying attention to his conversation and nonchalantly swinging the gun in his hand like it was any other object. If he was pointing it at practically everyone in the story surely one of them would have said something by now.
 
I still feel that a major portion of the blame goes towards the couple that followed the guy and called 911 on him. Why not alert store security? I'd also like to hear the 911 call to see what kind of inflammatory language was used to describe the situation. Cops get a call like that and they're coming in prepared for the worst. Not excusing the cops by any means but I'm sure the called played a factor into their state of mind when entering the store.

April and Ronald Ritchie, of Riverside, told WHIO that they were in the hardware department Tuesday around 8:20 p.m. when they saw a man walking the aisles carrying what they thought was a real gun, pointing it toward the sky. The couple called 911.

The couple said they followed Crawford at a safe distance. "Anytime I saw people walking his way, I would get their attention," April Ritchie said. She said the man was cradling a cellphone between his left ear and shoulder while he messed with the rifle.

"He just kept messing with it and I heard a clicking," April Ritchie said.

Ronald Ritchie said Crawford "was just waving [the gun] at children and people...I couldn't hear anything that he was saying. I'm thinking that he is either going to rob the place or he's there to shoot somebody.

"He didn't really want to be looked at and when people did look at him, he was pointing the gun at them. He was pointing at people. Children walking by," Ronald Ritchie said.

I use to live about 45 minutes from there. Trust me, it's historically racist. They use to have KKK rallies near by when I lived in the area. I got the fuck out of there and eventually came to LA and racism was one of the reasons. AND I'M NOT EVEN BLACK.

Crawford was in the pets department when the police arrived, Ronald Ritchie said.

“We moved up to get a closer view, which is not a good idea, but it happened,” he said. “We were hiding behind an aisle.

After police arrived, April Ritchie said she heard officers warn Crawford. “I heard, put it down, put it down,” she said. “I heard two shots after I saw him turn. He still had the weapon in his hand.”

The Ritchies said the man with the rifle fell backwards when he was struck by the gunshots. But, he got back up and went towards the officer who shot him. That officer then tackled the man with the rifle to the ground.

“He looked like he was going to go violently,” Ronald Ritchie said. “If he would have dropped the weapon, he could have came out with his life. But, unfortunately, he didn’t.”

From the couple's statement it sounds like the guy couldn't believe what he was hearing and turned around to see what was going on only to get fired upon by police.

He must have seemed like a real threat just ignoring potential targets and heading to the pet's department.

Well, I think it's a harmful stereotype to perpetuate about a large group of mostly innocent people. Given the nature of the incident detailed in the OP, I think it's in bad-taste and frankly a bit petty.

It's unbelievable that a man was killed for holding a toy gun in an open carry state.

And yes, an air gun is a toy. Sure, it can hurt; so can a paintball gun. It's still a toy.

If he indeed started waving the gun to the customers and did not comply to the officer's warning then it was obvious how that was going to end. I'm all for wrongs being made right and all and of course there is a huge amount of racism everywhere including within the police society but honestly I can't remember teh last time a white person was killed by a black person and the media spun the race card on it as hard core as when the opposite happens. But I'm bowing out of this now as I can see I'm just going to get labeled racist and nobody will understand that it's a two way street.

Cops were called, probably not knowing all details of a situation. Once that happened, yes they had the right to temporarily take away his open carry status. I don't think they should of shot, but like I said, I am awaiting full reports on it.

You going to keep comparing? Yay, that he managed to get the truth out, but lets not act like that, that happens a lot. GAF seems to be in love with things like this, despite 10K murders with guns every year in U.S. They focus primarily on cops. Maybe, just maybe if the country wasn't armed to the teeth (U.S have a high gun ownership percentage), we wouldn't need armed police officers all over the country.

Its highly probable this shooting had an ugly racial element to it, starting with couple that profiled the victim as a potentially violent thug, even going so far as to cite the cold stares and dehumanizing glances he supposedly gave to other customers.
