Cops shoot and kill man holding toy gun in Walmart

Honestly, how hard would it have been for the police to get on a bullhorn or even the fucking store PA system and tell him to put the gun down?

the ritchies created the situation and are the real scum of this incident. Nobody was thinking about the dude as he strolled the store minding his business on his phone and then the ritchies see him and decide to profile him follow him report him to the police and try to make other customers see him as a threat and in the end 2 ppl are dead and im sure many bystanders are now traumatized. This sucks so much man.

They will fight this tooth and nail because all the shit that's done "in the dark" will come to light. Quotas would be obliterated and promotions for higher ups would require doing actual fucking police work rather than fabricating numbers through innocent people's misery.
 
I have to admit, this story has taken more than a couple links to really get a grasp on, and even then I don't feel that it tells much overall. The thread's dialog is also all over the place, which doesn't help.

  • Girlfriend picks up John Crawford to pick up some supplies before attending a BBQ.
  • At some point, the two separate and Crawford has a black BB-pellet rifle. (Unsure if he purchased or simply picked up the rifle)
  • Crawford carelessly is handling the rifle and pointing it (jokingly?) at random customers.
  • Unsure of the sequence of these next two events but a customer places a 911 call after witnessing Crawford's action / Some panic ensues and a 37-year old woman attempting to flee the store dies.
  • Crawford is still patrolling wandering the store with the weapon, police come, shoot Crawford who is still clutching holding the weapon. He dies.

Pretty sure the woman fled after the shooting, not before.

I'm not believing this. Either this never happened (unlikely) or what the fuck are you people doing there in the US (likely)? I swear it's almost like there's a new thread every day about a cop killing a black guy. Do people not protest? Do people not riot?? I'm baffled.

We do riot. But it happens so often and shit doesn't change, that it's hard to get worked up about it. It's like this:

Imagine your fave sports team, yeah? Imagine they're hella good! Like they make it to the SuperDeluxeFinalBowlCup every damn year. And every damn year, they completely choke. Every. Damn. Year. How long before you go from "hell yeah we're in the finals" to "well we'll get it eventually" to "what the point? you're just gonna choke anyway". Yeah it burns us up and we rage againt the machine, but that's just it. It's a well oiled and systematic machine. it's designed to keep us in place. It's systematic racism and nothing short of a fucking revolution will displace it.

They do. But it's usually the communities that protest and the communities are black communities. Which means they get no air time on the news.

He was walking around the store. Patrolling would mean he was keeping watch over something, usually referring to an authority figure or a killer hunting people. Neither use is at all appropriate.

He was holding the weapon. Clutching makes it sound like he refused to drop it in the face of death, which is in no way at all confirmed.

Your use of language here is terrible and makes the guy sound like some psychotic criminal.

Oh. I don't see enough information to suggest definitively that he was or wasn't, but it's the probable outcome.

That is part of what I'm talking about. Most of the articles I've seen does not mention her. Even the one that did, it was briefly touched upon only in their video feed.

Apparently according to the police he purchased the rifle removed it from its packaging. After he removes it from its packaging he gets a call from the mother of his children. He's messing with the airsoft gun while on the phone with her.
Somewhere during all of this a women who is on the phone with her mother sees him. She tells her husband they proceed to follow him around( women has broken ankle and is in walmart scooter). They assume it is a real gun and he is gonna rob the place and call the police. They say he is giving everyone he sees dehumanizing stares and is pointing the gun at them. They are warning other people.
Cops get their after about three minutes ask him to drop the gun apparently with his back turned and being on the phone he probably thinks it is a joke. He says it is not a real gun. He attempts to turn around is shot dead. After handcuffing his dead body and checking the alleged weapon is when the police probably realize oops we killed an innocent person. Somewhere during all of this another women trying to escape the gunfire has some sort of medical emergency and dies.

That is about all I pieced together from the articles about this story.

We know he had a toy gun that looks like a real gun. We know he was shot because cops were called by other shoppers who mistook it for a real gun. We know he was shot because cops mistook it for a real gun and were hasty to fire.

Dehumanizing looks? Patroling? Clutching? Lots of loaded words being thrown around. I don't believe any of the weight of them until we see some fucking video. In a Wal-Mart. Which is by nature goddamn filled with video cameras through the aisles.

Rather than believe the people who said "That guy's scary! He has a gun! Call the cops!" And the cops who said "He has a gun! Shoot him!" I want to see the video and not rely on the memory of the people who are responsible for his death.

If he did buy it at a Walmart, shouldn't the tip of the pellet gun be orange? I thought it was illegal to sell pellet and toy guns without the orange muzzle to differentiate it from a real firearm. If that is the case, that's even more careless on both the parties that called it in and the officer that took the liberty to shoot on sight.

Sure. Except, the words I used aren't far off describing the situation that I've read or viewed on different sites.

- He was walking around the store on the phone, not shopping for hot dogs and mustard, pointing the weapon randomly at people. Patrolling isn't very far off.

- Witness stated that he was on the ground dying with the gun still in hand. I would say that he is grasping or clutching to the weapon.

For people to take it away as a questionable post says quite a bit about their mindset. Either way, I'll edit the post so people can stop derailing.

And I'll say again, I want to see the security video. I'm not going to blindly trust the reports of the cops who shot him or the people who called the cops on him when I know there was a camera pointed at him and every other shopper in the store because it's Wal-Mart. I'll be more willing to believe accounts if they match what's on the video, but as it is it's pretty easy to misremember, rationalize, or outright lie about what happened if the person giving the account feels emotionally or legally culpable for the shooting.

See above, about police reports circulating and no security video released yet. I'd rather see what happened rather than believe the narrative of the people who killed him.

No, but apparently when you're white and it's an actual rifle that fires bullets it's possible, safe, and legally sacred.

That's what's most fucked up about this. A guy has a pellet gun and is gunned down. Grandstanding white people afraid about the government taking their guns parade them around Wal-Mart, Target, and Denny's, carrying them openly and vocally, and they're treated like their actions are above any sort of legal scrutiny.
