Super Smash Bros. for 3DS & Wii U Thread 12: Gwah, hah. Welcome to the Bowser's game.

Yeah, it's basically a 'so bad it's good' way like you said. Dan is more funny for how ineffective he is, kinda like Pichu. Waluigi is just funny for how bad his design is and how dumb the character is.

As a Waluigi fan I can attest to his appeal--he's so stupid that he wraps around the spectrum to being completely awesome.
This is what I'm assuming most people are like and I can get behind that. The main reason I ask is when Mario Tennis first came out I was 9 and actually liked him as a character. As I got older, I slowly started realizing what a silly character he is (which isn't necessarily a bad thing). I just wasn't sure how many people were like younger me and find him to be a cool character.

There are things like this and that which make Waluigi appealing:

I don't think Waluigi is poorly designed or bad at all. He's the Dick Dastardly-esque classic cartoon villain to Mario's Popeye-esque (well, originally) classic cartoon hero. His awkward mannerisms and appearance would be funny enough on its own, but he's always doing new, super weird hilarious stuff all the time. I just think he's funny, and the individuals developing games featuring him seem to have a lot of fun with him too.

I totally get the mentality of people who don't like him, though, because I used to dislike him too.

CoroCoro has leaked, and there isn't anything new, as expected.

EDIT: Well, there's a ton of new pics and "mini confirmations" like a frog hat for the Mii Fighters.

How can...err could you hate this face? :(

I can kind of see that, too. It's just something about how even his name doesn't make sense. Like, with Wario it's a play on Mario and flipping the M upside down; with Waluigi, it doesn't even work on a pun level and it drives me crazy. Haha, maybe that's the point. But he just seems like a lazy design to me. More power to his fans, though, you guys seems to love him.

Looking through the leaks now, it includes our first view of customization on the 3DS, I believe. Looks like how you would expect it to look. Very similar to the Wii U version.

First screen of the for glory/fun menu on the 3DS version as well.

What other Mario character could crotch chop and not look ridiculous or out of character? Not even Wario is that crude.

Nintendo doesn't take Waluigi seriously. They know he's ridiculous and obnoxious, and they make it work.

Waluigi makes a river appear by turning on water via turning his ears.
Waluigi break dances
Waluigi laughs when hitting people with baseballs.
Waluigi can sit in a kart and have his knees be higher than his head

He isn't meant to be a serious or even real character. He just takes Luigi's differences from Mario and applies them to the extreme to Wario. Wario is crude, obnoxious, fat, greedy and lazy. But within the realm of possibility. Wario could exist, someone like him can be within the realm of reality. Waluigi takes Wario's traits and bumps them up to cartoon villain levels and that's charming about him.

Even Bowser, who usually acts like a cartoon villain, goes quite as far into the cartoon realm as Waluigi does.

Of course there are, but scans of things are generally against the GAF TOS.

Ah right. Yeah I knew that we can't post that kinda stuff here. I'll have to go looking. I'll take JoeInky's suggestion.

EDIT - Also that Yoshi hat is looking more like a Frog hat to me.

Looking at the CoroCoro scan, my guess is right in that the hats in Smash are not the same as the Plaza ones. The Yoshi one does not have his nose. But yeah, nothing that fantastic otherwise.

"Warui" means bad in Japanese, and warui + Ruigi = Waruigi. The pun works a lot better in Japanese I suppose. Just a little factoid I read a while ago that I still remember

Also it looks like Custom moves are part of a separate menu, not the CSS.

For fucks sake, sakurai.

Oh man. =/

I'm still interested in dabbling with different combinations but if it's unruly to do, we might never get to see this widely adopted in the competitive environment.

It's not like we didn't know there'd be no new information in this thing beforehand, anyway, given the Brawl one was similarly lacking in info, and CoroCoro even outright elaborated later that the Smash [4] book would only cover already-announced characters and stages.

First screen of the for glory/fun menu on the 3DS version as well.
Nah, that one's available in recent the 3DS trailer.

There's two really interesting screens that look like Smash Run, but we haven't seen them before. Some sort of rock-boss looking guy in what is certainly Smash Run, and another thing that looks like Smash Run but has multiple playable characters on it at once.

Also it looks like Custom moves are part of a separate menu, not the CSS.

For fucks sake, sakurai.

This is the 3DS version where everyone has their own system, so I wouldn't be too worried about that.

Kind of interesting then that Ice Climbers and neither Ness or Lucas are playable from the start if so...

I'd say Ness is gonna be unlockable again because Mother as a series is pretty much done. There's probably going to be some cuts and we've got a month left until Japanese release so let's just hope for the best.

Wouldn't surprise me in the slightest if what we know now is the starting roster minus the third parties.

I am starting to think this. It is interesting they decided to make Wario and Metaknight unlockables in this game. Either way, 1 more month until we know the full roster.

So that they could actually be usable in competitive play without having to slow down tournaments right the fuck down?

I mean, it's not hard to have it on the CSS after everyone has selected their character:

And I'm not even much of a UI designer.

That slows down matches even more. Now every time I play I have to go through another menu just to start a round?

No, how it is now is the best.

I know I'm opening up a can of worms here, but what is the appeal of Waluigi for most people? I don't mean that in an annoyed or "you like a dumb character" way, I'm legitimately asking.

Is it because he's so bad he's a funny troll character? Do you want him as the Dan of Smash Bros. and the various Mario spin-offs? Or do you actually find him to be a good and enjoyable character? I really want to know in what way most people are fans of him.

Pretty much.
