Rise of the Tomb Raider timed Xbox exclusive for Holiday 2015 (No PS/PC, SE publish)

Run franchise into ground.

Successfully revive the franchise.

Piss off half of the revived fanbase.

Complain that the game didn't sell well enough.

Cancel franchise.

Close the developer.

Yup.

I dont get why MS does not invest in IP's and studios. If you want to counter Uncharted get one of your studios to develop one. Buying previously multiplat games for specific time periods without helping in development in anyway just seems so lazy.

Although I thought TR was one of the worst games I have had the misfortune to play I know there are quite a few fans of the game. I really feel sorry for those who bought a ps4 or upgraded a pc and played TR DE just in anticipation of the next title.

If the plan was to counter Uncharted then Square Enix is dumber than I could have ever imagined. Uncharted is popular but so is Tomb Raider and I know a ton of people who prefer TR over UC and will be pissed when they find this out.

This actually sets a dangerous precedent for MS now. TR is a fairly sizable franchise, one that I thought would be too big to moneyhat. What's to stop MS from shelling out for bigger franchises like Fallout, Final Fantasy, etc? Only franchises that seem safe for now are mega blockbusters like Call of Duty and GTA.

This has to be one of his best tweets. Top five at lest.

This is all a bit crazy right now, should wait for more details but I'm not quite sure what MS's thinking is behind this.

Either way though it's a big get, clearly.

This is crap...

I have both systems, just so I can play exclusives, but there is no way I am buying this.

You have exclusives that are made in house.

You have exclusives, like the recent Sunset Overdrive, where the developer gets to keep control of their product, so staying on one system makes sense.

You have exclusives, like Bayonetta 2, where one of the big companies helps fund the game which would have never been made otherwise.

With all of these I have no problem buying the game and is the reason I own all the major systems.

Then you have crap like this where one company pays to keep the game off other systems. This is complete anti-consumer shit. This is not helping the gamer. This is not creating exciting content for your fans. This is not making me want to support your company by hiring the most talented artist in the industry and giving them a chance to wow me. This is 100% complete mafia bullshit of taking out all competition and leaving me one single choice.

fuck you I am not supporting this...

Perfect post, I agree with everything you said.

Bad move by CD, regardless of the paycheck they got ignoring the biggest gaming install base PC and the biggest next gen install base ps4 is stupid, i really doubt TR has the pull to make people buy a console just for it and less likely with all the people they pissed off with this deal, stupid stupid move indeed

I would also like him to name the last time a game was announced for other platforms then was bought by Sony and those other releases did not happen.

People crying about PS bias are being ridiculous; this game was announced for other platforms including PC and that is now (apparently?) not happening. Accusing people of being bitter Sony fans because a game they had announced for their system and were taking pre-orders for being cancelled because of blatant moneyhats is completely absurd in this situation.
I am not him, but Everybody's gone to the rapture comes to mind. Was announced for PC.

Kind of interesting how there was exactly zero vitriol in that thread without knowing what game it was that would be made an MS exclusive, yet in this thread every other post is someone condemning MS for buying out a franchise.

Because people thought it would be a new game and not one already announced for several platforms?

I would agree with you on that but then you have that thread from earlier, where people were complaining about Sunset Overdrive being a Moneyhat since Isominiac has been with Sony for so long :/

Well those people are dead wrong.

Also am I the only one who feels Square took a look at how TR: DE sold on current gen systems and used that as a gauge for how much theyd sell with Rise? Ultimately deciding to have someone else fund the project, which "surely wouldnt meet expectations"?

Or maybe they just mixed up the numbers when they reviewed sales lol

Yup. Shows you how bias some people here.

I'm all cool for Microsoft for getting exclusives but honestly getting a game series like tomb raider that just came out last year and getting a sequel that is exclusive is a terrible marketing strategy. ps4 just got the first game this past January, what were they thinking? Lets release the first game on ps4 so people can get excited to play the 2nd on Xbox one!

Well, I wont say that this is exactly good news, but neither a bad one, because its very relative. Im not hating MS neither SE for this... These are big companies, they have market plans and are doing what they can to keep a safe position (and in MS case to regain a better position this gen for Xbox).

So, as long as their move do Xbox some good, on the future may also, consequently, do some good for their consumers (given a bigger user base, better support, and whatever).

Anyway, besides the shocking news I dont think people need to be that worried. I guess that not longer then a year after release it will appear at other platforms aswell. Ryse and DR3 were both "exclusives" either... Today is hard to believe on a 3rd party exclusivity, specially on Tomb Raider case.

This is why I always buy both consoles. I don't want to miss out. Being mad at Microsoft makes no sense to me. This is a business, Xbox One is in a sink or swim situation, and Microsoft ain't trying to drown.

Of course both companies fund some terrible projects. I was really just trying to point out the absurdity behind the "the publisher has to own the studio to make an exclusive legit" mantra some people keep bringing up. As if the exact manner in which great videogames are funded is critically important to people. Like anyone of the people criticizing this shit gave two fucks that MGS4 was paid to be kept off of the 360 in 2008. No one ran around here yelling about how scummy Sony was for that stuff back then.

Sony doesn't have the money to really throw around these days to pay for exclusives, so suddenly it's not a cool thing for anyone else to do it.

It's not good for anybody for 3rd party studios to accept money to keep games off other platforms. That goes both ways.

It's funny how you say "it's just business" and recognize the existence of fans in the same post. Not PlayStation fans even. What about fans of Tomb Raider as a series? Tomb Raider 2013? Not everyone has $400 to shit out just because SE decides to accept money to cancel the game on two platforms.

Yeah but theres a big disconnect here.

Theres nothing "malicious" happening here. Does anyone really think SE is in the best financial shape ever? Maybe now the game has a bigger budget. Maybe now it wont be cancelled or something.

Lot of jumping to conclusions here. Sony pays for Bloodbourne and everyone is happy and cool with it. MS gets sunset overdrive and titanfall, which we now know wouldnt of existed if it wasnt for MS, and the pitchforks come out.

Maybe bloodbourne wouldnt of come out if sony didnt come in and help with some cash, or wouldnt be nearly as good.

Stop acting like this is some evil move. Its business. And we might get a better game because of it.

I forgot that Sony had this game prominent in their E3 presentation. That's pretty fucked after devoting time on their stage to this game.

Hope they fail hard, MS is disgusting, Instead of creating their own studios and games they are paying 3rd party to NOT release their game on other platforms, scummy and low.

I hope CD and Square will regret that deeply.
Square probably would have failed harder if they didn't make the deal with Xbox

Makes me laugh how they try and justify it other than a bag full of money for them.

It is not good for the TR community in any way.

I must admit I didn't like the original all that much so I probably wouldn't have bought it anyway. It just felt too combat-heavy for a Tomb Raider game and didn't offer anything new or refreshing. Disappointing for those PS fans who did enjoy it though.

I understand the disappointment about the exclusivity, but why aren't people just as bummed about cross-gen on a Holiday 2015 title?

Seems odd.

Probably going to be two different games. I'm not worried about 360 limitations.
If I'm not mistaken, Forza Horizon 2 is also different games across generations.

by that reasoning, MS has a huge warchest, they could easily buy SE if they wanted to

This is ASSUMING that that's what happened. We all remember what happened with Titanfall right? A bunch of posters said the same "wah wah anti-consumer" stuff, and in the end it turns out that it was because MS stepped in and footed part of the bill for developing the game. It could be the same thing here or something similar. SE isn't exactly in the best situation financially right now.

Stepping in to foot part of the bill is exactly what "paying to keep it off opposing platforms" means.

There is no difference.

And I still don't believe for a second the Titanfall story that it would have been cancelled. All it takes is for someone to have the "Ship up or there will be dire consequences!" conversation and you can claim it was in danger of cancellation without it ever really being in any danger.

Most people weren't going to go near it until it dropped to $5 on steam so it's certainly one way to drum up some interest for your series.
Think we all know at this stage there's no such thing as genuine 3rd party exclusives from western developers anymore, the greed is to great. Will certainly be on PS4 and Steam in 2016.

if it is timed, they certainly wouldn't announce that until well after the Xbox release otherwise it'll cannibalize initial sales

Yup. There's no way in hell we'll ever find out if it's a timed exclusive before release, unless someone screws up really bad.

Check their wording, that's the only way.

Final Fantasy wouldn't happen just because it wouldn't sell in Japan (remember FF13 didn't even come out on 360 there).

Fallout would be theoretically possible; like you I wouldn't have thought a TR buyout would have been possible, but here we are. If Fallout winds up being exclusive, regardless of who it is exclusive for, there will be riots in the streets. The internet would not be able to contain the rage.
