Rise of the Tomb Raider timed Xbox exclusive for Holiday 2015 (No PS/PC, SE publish)

Namco Bandai releases many games only on PS3/4, did you ever complain they are anti-consumer?

Yakuza is exclusive on PS3/4, did you ever complain SEGA is anti-consumer?

Yakuza probably isn't even coming out in the west is it? Namco/Bandai make lots of games focused on the domestic Japanese market. Simple business logic would mean you wouldn't bother with Xbox versions of those.

This pisses me off. I had absolutely no problems with Titanfall being exclusive because it was a new IP. TR is obviously a different case with established fans on both consoles.

Now the only way I would buy Xbone for one single game is if it was groundbreaking like RE4 was. Fat chance of that.

I enjoyed the remake enough to be looking forward to the sequel, but I didn't love it enough to buy a new system for it. I'll wait for a PC version, or I'll just skip the game.

Hmmmm, i am currently debating if i will buy a ps4 or a xbone first, and i am a pretty big fan of tomb raider 2013, so maybe i should get a.....

Nop, still leaning towards a ps 4 :)

So can you give me the rules for outrage on these matters? Like at what point does the team become big enough to make the exclusives valid, etc? This stuff sounds complicated.

Lol, must be hard to understand for you given your posts here. Paying to prevent a game from coming to othee consoles is bad. Plain and simple.

What are you talking about? The original Tomb Raider came out for the PC and Saturn, and the two sequels came out for the PC.

If memory serves, a Saturn version of TR2 was in development but canceled after a deal was made with Sony. The agreement lasted until 2000 or so, just in time for the series to return to Sega platforms on the Dreamcast.

It was funny reading posts like this about Titanfall a year ago. Then the real story came out that the game almost got cancelled because they ran out of money, and Microsoft stepped in to fund it, thus making it exclusive.

We all heard the reports that Square Enix was disappointed by Tomb Raider's sales last year. We don't know what kind of things were going on behind the scenes with these projects.

Where is that story? I find it hard to believe EA ran out of money to fund a game created by the makers of Call of Duty.

Yeah; I never bought those claims. I don't believe EA would have turned away the makers of Call of Duty considering how desperate they've been to outdo COD in recent years. I don't believe that this scenario is mildly comparable to Bayonetta 2.

So many hates towards to Xbox One & MS. I really don't get it.

You don't get why people are pissed off that a sequel to a game that was multiplatform is now being locked out from them? Tomb Raider Definitive Edition just released on PS4 in January. Now, Square is telling those that bought the game, to go buy an Xbox One to play the sequel, or they can keep playing on their PS4's and miss out on a sequel to a game they liked.

Are people really breaking this down on a moral level?

They are a business. Another business made an offer and they accepted it.

Its not like phil spencer punched a sony fan in the head and said this is MINE now
You clearly haven't read my quickly compiled fanfiction on the matter, yet.

PS4 is dominating Europe and Tomb Raider is pretty big there no? How does this make any sense? The amount of money changing hands behind the scenes has to be enormous.

Let's say RotTR would have sold about 6+ million copies as a multiplatform title (as much as the last game). Not releasing a version for the platform that is and will be the clear market leader could easily cost them 3-4 million in sales if it was a permanent exclusive.

some of the replies in this thread..

Looking forward to see how the game shapes up

Drive by post. If you don't agree with those upset, then contribute and explain why you disagree instead of throwing cheap insults. Saying it's just people being "salty" completely dismisses the discussion and the view points they have. Believe it or not, not every person upset is approaching this from a console war mentality. Even X1 owners do not like this.

Im a bit disappointed that MS said they had a big exclusive to announce at the start of the show and it was a game already announced... and already coming to Xbox One they just obviously paid to keep it off other platforms.

I loved the reboot so I'm very much looking forward to it though. I can only assume that either Square Enix were concerned about going up against Uncharted, or that MS saw the release dates align and used that to their advantage.

Some ppl have been TR fans since 1996, so this is a big punch into their faces by Square Enix and Crystal Dynamics.
Its not like some shitty ass small game by an unknown developer. They just made / Tomb Raider / a franchise that started in 1996 (and not on Xbox until TR7) exclusive.
The whole "hurr durr everyone is so salty thing" got old really fast in here. I know alot of people (including many big fansite owners etc) that are genuinely disappointed right now.

And you know this for certain right ? You have factual information about Square Ennix and Crystal Dynamic finance situation right?

show us... break the numbers for us.

6.3 million copies of the last TR were sold, over half of that were on two platforms prevented from being included in this newest version. How's that for numbers chum?

You don't get why people that want to play it on PS4 are angry about this news!? It was announced for PS4...

I want to play Deep Down on my X1. I want to play Yakuza on my 360 or X1. I want to play Tales of X 1/2 on my 360.

I can't because they are exclusive on PS3/4. But I wasn't angry because I know I love those games and I will buy PS3/4 to play them.

Well was yakuza ever on different platforms? No it was always on playstation. Tomb Raider was on playstation and now it's not. If tomb raider started on xbox I would have been fine with it but starting a seires on muilt platform and now going exclusive, now that's where it I draw the line.

So can you give me the rules for outrage on these matters? Like at what point does the team become big enough to make the exclusives valid, etc? This stuff sounds complicated.

If you genuinely can't understand why, I think you should stop responding to people. Because it's really not hard to understand why.

i own both consoles but wow. this is such a great exclusive i never thought MS can pull this off. . good for them. such a good game

how do you know they paid to keep it from ps4 ? maybe square didnt want to make another since it didnt meet expectations.

I mean more to do with Japanese business. It seems odd that the game was promoted by Sony at e3 and then declared exclusive to another platform a few months later.

well, doesn't matter if it's an American or Japanese business, the company is going to be pissed lol

Namco Bandai releases many games only on PS3/4, did you ever complain they are anti-consumer?

Yakuza is exclusive on PS3/4, did you ever complain SEGA is anti-consumer?

I thought Namco decided against releasing on Xbox after the dismal returns on of their games on the platform?

Was Yakuza ever on the Xbox?

What's with all these false equivalency posts in this thread? I'm getting a headache.

The fact that Microsoft have to pay for exclusives to make people want their console is another sign that the xbone is massively inferior to the alternatives

Be that as it may, it does describe a good chunk of the reactions in this thread.

Here's the thing. When we look back at how Tomb Raider evolved on last gen, it's a heavy partnership with the 360 first and foremost. Legend launched there, and it didn't come to the PS3 for years. Anniversary started as download packs on XBL, Underworld had two chapters exclusive to Xbox that never came to any other platform, and Guardian of Light was on Summer arcade for months before it arrived anywhere.

It seemed like they had a strong relationship with Microsoft throughout- but to go fully exclusive is still surprising. To not be on PC? That feels rough though. Always looked forward to playing it on PC.

We don't know how much of the bill MS is footing here. Square wasn't happy with how TR sold, possible that they're not as confident in the sequel. Exclusive also means that they get a big advertising boost

Yeah it's not a perfect comparison either way, and we'll likely never know the full details of what MS is paying for here. Could be just to get the exclusive window, could be for a lot more.

Going to be interesting to see if Sony uses the same tactics later today and seeing the reactions then.

There's absolutely nothing wrong in being disappointed if you don't own an Xbone. You wanted to play, you can't, that sucks. It's the hyperbole that is ridiculous.
I am pretty sure if Sony took the next Bioshock sequel exclusive to the PS4, I would not defend Sony at all (unless it was the only way the game would exist otherwise [like Bayonetta 2]).
