Rise of the Tomb Raider timed Xbox exclusive for Holiday 2015 (No PS/PC, SE publish)

I came to see some hardcore meltdowns, Bayonetta style. My internet connection has been funny though, so haven't been through all the posts yet. Any epic posts I may have missed?

I forgot uncharted 4 is coming out next year

Another reason could be square enix thinks people would buy uncharted 4 over tomb raider if they released within a month of each other

But it was still paid for by MS probably to be exclusive

Anyway, it seems Crystal Dynamics was caught by surprise like Respawn? (thread goes by too fast).

It's Tomb Raider's history linked to PC? I know that's where I played the original games.
Being available yeah, but the game or Lara herself was heavily linked to Playstation, just like Solid Snake is.
Its not the point of being available for another systems, it's like MGS becoming Exclusive to Xbox, people would flip.

Which Sony didn't pay for. The 100M user v. 20M user gap did. I mean, what kind of publisher is so stupid that given the choice between a clearly better selling console with forward momentum on it's side and a far less selling console with huge swaths of disinterest globally when deciding where to release a hopeful multi-million seller?

Other than SE I mean.
how do you know they didn't pay for it? They just abandoned the 40-50 million Xbox and gcn users because they hate money?

Pathetic. I wonder how many people will be deceived by this blatant timed exclusivity disguised as genuine exclusivity and actually buy an Xbone.

Are we gonna pretend like Rise of the Tomb Raider wasn't already announced, with people having pre-ordered it on other platforms?

We have no idea how far in development RotTR was. The fact that Gamestop and others opted to start pre-orders the second a CG trailer was debuted at E3 isn't particularly relevant. It's not like SE gets a cent of that pre-order money.

Furthermore, the game is still coming to PS4. Just not at the same time. Microsoft paid for a window of exclusivity, they're not robbing PS4 owners of a game.

Hellblade is a new IP whereas Tomb Raider is an established IP. A better example would be a hypothetical chance of Resident Evil 7 being PS4 exclusive.

This is kind of disingenuous. The prior Tomb Raider games (Legend, Anniversary, Underworld) all sold like crap... despite being pretty good, if you're into the classic Tomb Raider formula.

Having people come out and say 'Sony fans have supported you the whole time.... and by 'whole time' we mean we bought one rerelease of a game on a newly launched console with a small library of games to choose from at the time'. It's BS.

The fact that Tomb Raider may be tied to the Playstation brand for some due to the nostalgia of the first two games almost TWENTY YEARS AGO, doesn't make that relationship a tangible consideration for the businesses today.

Because the modship trusts the variety of insiders who have corroborated the information that the game is timed.

But it has not been officially declared as such.

Though these things are subject to change. Titanfall was timed until MS renegotiated the deal.

Though I can't imagine MS wouldn't have finalized everything with Tomb Raider from the getgo. Titanfall was renegotiated after the unexpectedly tepid reaction to the Xbox One's announcement.

I am ok with this, and despite actually wanting it on PC at launch, I'm confident it will come to Steam eventually in 2016. Not a big deal for me.

Lots of companies do this stuff.

Pathetic. I wonder how many people will be deceived by this blatant timed exclusivity disguised as genuine exclusivity and actually buy an Xbone.

Hey, it worked last time during the 360 days.

Plus, Sony appears to have jumped on the bandwagon with timed exclusives too! So its not just MS.

Hell, at this very conference, they announced that HellBlade game as a PS4 timed exclusive.

pretty big snatch

Nice tits though.

As somebody that owns both consoles, I get the strong sense that there wouldn't be half as much whining if Rise Of The Tomb Raider were announced as a 2015 PS4 exclusive.

People want PS4 to win because of Sony's smart practices, so they'll celebrate any decision that benefits them, curse every one that doesn't align with that ideal.

Ninja Theory's HellBlade was announced as a timed exclusive to PS4, no bitching.

It's just fanboy BS at this point.

I get that people want to play as many games as possible on their platform of choice. Name a time where any console has ever received every single third party release, let alone at the exact same time. 16bit era? 32bit era? PS2 era? Last gen? Never. There were always deals as competitors tried to vie for advantage.

I have no problem with Microsoft using their advantage (a shit ton more money to throw around on securing 3rd party exclusive content) to try and mitigate Sony's advantage (a shit ton more internal studios to create exclusive content).

I have no problem with Square Enix, who has been rocky financially of late, taking guaranteed up-front money to finance the development of a game (or perhaps other projects) and temporarily delaying the money they would get from sales of the PS4 version.

or maybe there is more moaning because sales figures strongly indicate that there are more tomb raider fans on playstation. I wouldnt call it fanboy BS, the only fanboy BS i see is people calling PS4/PC owners salty and laughing at them being a bit pissed off...

As a defender of Tomb Raider 2013 from the day it was announced, and as someone who absolutely loved the game and 100%'d it, I will not buy this game on Xbox One or Xbox 360.

I refuse to support this kind of bullshit for established IPs. Moneyhatting at it's finest.

Makes no fucking sense after S-E was whining that the game didn't sell well enough (even though it did multiple millions). This is not going to help with that.

This is kind of sleazy. A multi platform game that was, now becomes exclusive. Nothing new was created. Maybe MS will start buying up all the multi platform games they can.

I'm sure it'll improve MS console sales greatly though, by at least 1 percent.

Maybe it shouldn't but it does and since emotions are more powerful then logic and the right emotions can lead directly to profits, "shouldn't" doesn't matter at all in the end.

But negative emotions can also work on an inverse.

I'm just kind of baffled by Microsoft's assumption that this would somehow result in positive PR.

But is it not hard to understand that many people were expecting something other than a timed (and briefly presumed full) exclusivity announcement for Tomb Raider, and such expectations regarding something people look forward to being completely turned on their head might annoy those people? The previous announcement of the game without mention of exclusivity only reinforced the expectation of a multiplatform release.

how do you know they didn't pay for it? They just abandoned the 40-50 million Xbox and gcn users because they hate money?

Because what sense would it have made? The PS2 had thoroughly destroyed all the competition by the time SC3 came out and Sony was prepping for the PS3.

Meanwhile hardware sales had completely flatlined for both of the other two systems, software sales were nosediving, and a large portion of that 40-50M userbase had sucked it up and bought PS2s to go along with their other platforms. Hell, the Xbox 360 was out shortly after it's release (talk about a game MS SHOULD have money hatted).

Not to mention an even greater PS2 market dominance in Japan, where fighting games were disproportionately popular compared to other games.

Why did SC2 sell best on Gamecube? Because it had Link. Throw in a Nintendo mascot character and funny shit happens on Nintendo systems. Namco was aware of this and wasn't going to licensed characters route for 3.

All in all there is a clear motivator for Namco to buck previous release sales data as spurious and make the safe market decision based on the current climate. There is zero reason to suggest that Sony would pay them for that when Sony was already hyping the PS3, Nintendo the Wii, etc.. The generation was over, Sony won and won big. SC3 was exclusive simply because Namco couldn't be bothered to support anything else.

It's Tomb Raider's history linked to PC? I know that's where I played the original games.

It was a multi-platform franchise from the start.

Initial game had a simultaneous release on PSone, Saturn and PC.

TR2 was announced for all three platforms.

Sony paid for console exclusivity so Saturn version was cancelled and original franchise continued on PSone and PC.

Im confused. Aren't those games still on playstation systems? We didn't lose them did we? So why does what happened in the past matter? This isn't even the first time Square has done this.

People are bitter because it's not on their system (yet). Everything else is just excuses to make it seem like that isn't the reason.

It matters because now we can't see or play the continuation of the story unless PC owners buy a console they won't play on?

If it was an exclusive IP then fair enough, the problem is that they are cutting off all their fans to make a quick buck from Microsoft.

Because SC2 sold better on the GCN than on the PS2; not only that, it was Namco's biggest seller in 2003. So obviously there was a huge SC fanbase that owned a GCN. i don't know what else to tell you, because it seems you are in denial mode. Also, SC2 sold very well on Xbox too.

Legit foul on MS and Square Enix's part. Exclusives should be left to new IP's or existing IP's that are already exclusive. You don't take an existing franchise and make it exclusive. Man, this industry has some big, hairy balls sometimes.

After Ryse and Dead Rising 3, there are still people think this is anything other than timed? That's laughable lol. Can't wait to play this in 2016 on PC.

Logic has no place in gaming forum. Please see your way out.

Damn that's kind of fucked up. Gotta play dirty to win I guess, and SE probably couldn't turn down those bags of money. Good thing I'm getting an XB1 this fall.

Nice , good catch for MS. After the first trailer hits I feel lots of gamers are going to be giddy over this. Obviously this a hunch based on how good the first game was

I was planning to buy a Xbox One for christmas - mostly for the Halo collection (never played Halo and wanted to see what the fuss was all about). I bought a PS4 at launch, but without Kinect and at the lower price I was going to go "both ways" this generation.

But now there's just no way I'll ever buy one.

Is this a joke account? Tomb Raider releases in a little over a year, development had to be well underway. Tomb Raider released on PS3 and re-released on PS4. Now Square decided to tell those that bought the game to get lost. Square doesn't need our money because they have Microsoft's.

or maybe there is more moaning because sales figures strongly indicate that there are more tomb raider fans on playstation. I wouldnt call it fanboy BS, the only fanboy BS i see is people calling PS4/PC owners salty and laughing at them being a bit pissed off...

Which sales figures? I'm honestly asking, because the only version I know for sure sold better on a Sony platform was the recent re-release of the reboot (try saying that 5 times fast). It's ridiculous for Sony fans to say they supported the franchise the whole time, then selectively ignore the fact that Legends, Anniversary and Underworld all underperformed, the reboot sold better on the Xbox 360. PS4 owners bought the re-release in large part because there was NOTHING coming out on the console between launch and Second Son. I don't blame them, but let's not claim the stronger sales of TR:DE on PS4 were the result of a long-standing love of the franchise.

But is it not hard to understand that many people were expecting something other than a timed (and briefly presumed full) exclusivity announcement for Tomb Raider, and such expectations regarding something people look forward to being completely turned on their head might annoy those people? It's easy to understand disappoint. Not so easy to understand entitlement, and in some cases, borderline insanity.

It was a multi-platform franchise from the start.

You are correct, I never had a PS1 or PS2 so I only knew of the PC versions.

TR2 was announced for all three platforms.

Sony paid for console exclusivity so Saturn version was cancelled and original franchise continued on PSone and PC.

That's kind of ironic then LOL

Makes no fucking sense after S-E was whining that the game didn't sell well enough (even though it did multiple millions). This is not going to help with that.

This, on its face, is not evil or a violation of your entitlements. A game coming out on a console is a good thing. You can spend your money how you like, but I think you are mistaken about the attitude S-E does this with.

I can think of situations that it would be a bad thing, but there is nothing inherently bad about console exclusivity.

If this is a true exclusive that will never come to PS or PC then fine. The announcement is worded correctly. If, however, this is coming to PS and PC in future then using the term 'exclusive to xbox' and releasing that statement makes literally no sense. It would actually be pretty disgusting marketing B.S. of the highest order.

But I can't understand how that makes sense financially (especially after all the very public sales vs targets issues on the last game). MS have moneyhatted this hard and I don't agree with it. I would feel the same if Sony did this too. It's not right shutting out huge amounts of people from an established successful franchise.

I was planning to buy a Xbox One for christmas - mostly for the Halo collection (never played Halo and wanted to see what the fuss was all about). I bought a PS4 at launch, but without Kinect and at the lower price I was going to go "both ways" this generation.

lol. Sure you were. "what? They are putting more games on my system? Well to hell with them, then!"

Really obvious troll post, man.
