Strongly agree, its a bit overwhelming. I get a similar feeling when i see those Mugen videos character screens with like 9000 characters.

And yep, trickling them in means you'll likely give everyone a go. Plus it would give meaning to single player modes.

I hate how most modern fighters have stopped with secret characters, cheapens the experience. Hopefully Smash doesnt follow suit ( do one tournament players )!
 
In regards to starting roster for Smash 4, I think all the revealed characters except the third party characters and maybe Luigi are part of the starting roster. For Brawl, all the characters revealed on the dojo prior to release were on the starting roster with the exception of Snake and Sonic.

Great roster (It would be perfect with an Advance Wars character), but I don't think we are getting a Donkey Kong rep (unfortunately) and I also doubt Snake will be back (again, unfortunately).

funny how he was in every prediction and now he is totally gone, I am expecting something like that for Shulk, not like I want to :c

Robin could go either way, seems like he could be a starter. Greninja and Palutena as well, but I'm almost certain they're gonna be unlockable - they seem to be the kind of character that would be.

I also believe several Brawl newcomers are gonna be unlockable this time around. It seems like at least one of either Dedede or Meta Knight will be unlockable. Ike could be an unlockable as well, especially since Marth's a starter now. I wouldn't be surprised if Zero Suit Samus and Sheik ended up being unlockable. Toon Link and Luigi are definitely going to be unlockable as well.

My guess would be that the 3DS and Wii U may have different unlockables/ starters. For example maybe Little Mac and Rosalina are starters on the 3DS version but on the Wii U version they are unlockables with Wii Fit Trainer and Princess Peach being starters.

Just some thoughts on starting rosters although without the full picture of characters its hard to say. I find it strange that Rosalina would be a starting character but it could be due to unique playstyle. I chose the starters based on series relevance, starters in the past and unique gameplay.

I realize it may not be the most likely scenario, but it's certainly possible. I mean, we got both Meta Knight and King Dedede in Brawl. Robin AND Lucina in the new game, too. Heck, in Melee we got Zelda/Sheik, Ganondorf, AND Young Link. I think Donkey Kong deserves four characters.

Maybe a little optimistic, but I wouldn't say overly so. Take away three newcomers (Dixie Kong, King K. Rool, and Ridley) and up to three veterans (Mewtwo, Lucas, Snake) and you've got my absolute minimum expectations, and I think that's very, very reasonable and likely.

Yeah, I would go with that but my expectation is way lower than that but it's reasonable for most of fans here tho.

Olimar & Pokémon Trainers were starter characters in Brawl, as were most newcomers last time (I think R.O.B, and Lucario were the only non-3rd Partu/Cloneish newcomers. Prerelease, I thought they were all secret. I could see all 1st/2nd Party newcomers known so far being starters for this reason.

This looks maybe one column too wide. If you reduce it to a nice even 10 columns, it would be 50. You would just need to cut 5 characters.

I would suggest Ridley, K. Rool, Dixie, Lucas, and Mewtwo. But yeah Snake probably isn't around so I'm not sure who makes it in.

I'd like Dixie and K.Rool to show up but I suspect they won't.

The layout is based on the 3DS demo, and the characters fall into place with relative ease.


  • The six characters leading the rows (Mario, Link, Pit, Kirby, Pikachu, and Villager) appear on both the 3DS and Wii U box arts. Samus is the only other character to do so. They’re also listed in the order of their debut, with Mario in 1981, Link in 1986, and so on.
  • The middle two rows are led by Kid Icarus and Kirby, two franchises which Sakurai worked on. In Melee and Brawl, Kirby also appeared in the middle of the select screen.
  • The Mario universe encompasses the top row and hooks down at the end to include Wario.
  • Wario and Chorus Kids are touching, which are both developed by the same team.
  • The 1986 Disk System series (Zelda, Metroid, and Kid Icarus) are all touching.
  • Pit is below Link (bow-wielding heroes), and Palutena is below Zelda (titular female mages).
  • Zelda, Kid Icarus, Fire Emblem, and Xenoblade are all touching, which could be broadly categorized as “weapon-based mythology” series.
  • Dedede and Ice Climbers, the hammer wielders, are next to each other.
  • Pokémon and Mother are together, which are both RPG series with ambiguous historical links (Ape/Creatures).
  • Star Fox and F-Zero are touching, which seem to share a universe.
  • The two “captains” (Falcon and Olimar) are together.
  • The hardware-based characters (WFT, R.O.B., and G&W) are together.
  • The two oldest characters from 1980 are together, G&W and Pac-Man.
Of course, a lot of that might be a coincidence, but it’s all reminiscent of the OCD Sakurai exhibited in putting Brawl’s select screen together.

There's still time to reveal everyone before release if Sakurai picks up the pace. 1-2 characters on the site per week until September and 4-5 characters in a Smash Bros. Direct would do the trick.
