Super Smash Bros. for 3DS & Wii U Thread 12: Gwah, hah. Welcome to the Bowser's game.

Hahaha I'm wiser than -affirming- something's gonna happen when Sakurai's on charge, just saying that, up until now (aah Dojo flashbacks), no character introduced as a starter has become unlockable in a later game. Just stating the precedent, by no means guaranteeing I can predict the Masahiro Storm.

Well, I could see Sakurai would turn Lucas into unlockable character if he got in. Since I can see Ness become starter character once again.

Miis are unlockable in pretty much every game where they aren't the primary playable character. I expect the same for Smash.
So is Rosalina, but she appears to be a starter here.

I honestly don't think there will be hidden characters at all -- with such a big focus on things like Amiibo and customization, it feels like hidden special moves and power-ups will take the place of unlockable characters.

I don't know... I love unlocking characters, but something in my gut is telling me that everyone will be available from the start this time around. I don't see the logic in announcing hidden characters months/years in advance (like Luigi and Toon Link), making them playable in public demos, and then arbitrarily locking them away in the retail version.

I still kinda think there's a good chance we might just start off with the entire roster unlocked this time around. Considering Sakurai's comments about removing Adventure Mode because people uploading cutscenes to Youtube, I wouldn't be surprised if he has similarly soured on unlockable characters due to info on all the unlockable characters being readily available before the game even officially launches.

Lucario
Wolf
Toon Link (who I guess I'll count, even though he is like a new age Young Link replacement :P)
ROB

Those are the only ones off the top of my head.

Forgot Lucario. Thanks.

Perfectly ok with that! Makes tournament organizing much easier too.

I'd still say that it's enough of a precedent that it's crazy to say there's no chance someone like Ice Climbers, Lucas, Wario etc. could be pushed into being unlockable because Sakurai had to reveal most of the newcomers as part of the hype cycle.

Well, I could see Sakurai would turn Lucas into unlockable character if he got in. Since I can see Ness become starter character once again.

Perhaps I explained myself wrong, but as stated to Heath, not saying it's got no chance of happening...This is Sakurai we are talking about, that man could talk Nintendo into making new games for the Virtual Boy. Just that so far it hasn't become true, and I lean more toward that than I do the alternative. Anything can happen, and I look forward to be surprised.

That said, how many characters from previous games who were always starters are left to be revealed? Only Wario, Lucas and the Ice Climbers, no? Since the previous Smash Direct unveiled four veterans, I can see a potential Smash Direct unveiling all of these three. Not saying it will happen, but do think it likely.

I used to think we would be getting no unlockables, but as we're getting closer and closer to release I've changed my mind. I'm thinking there will be some, but fewer than we're used to getting. We still have almost certainly nine veterans left and a couple newcomers, and character reveals haven't sped up at all. And I really don't expect the game to launch with unannounced characters in the starting roster--that has never, ever been Smash's style.

We are still likely to get a Smash Bros. direct before launch, but I can't see that one direct announcing ten+ characters at once.

My guess for which of the currently revealed characters, if any, are unlockables:

  • Greninja and Lucario: 'Zard and the electric rat are the franchise poster boys, and I don't see Pokemon getting to have 3/4 dudes up front with there still being room for newcomers.
  • Ike, and either Marth or Lucina. Robin gets in because Awakening is huge and he's a newcomer. Marth is the FE franchise mascot and, to an extent, a poster boy for Smash too, so he could get the promotion, but there's reasons to put Lucina first (initial roster diversity + again, Awakening was HUGE).
  • Luigi. Sorry bro, but you're still second banana.
  • Captain Falcon. The latest F-Zero game was released when?!
  • Meta Knight. Not exactly an essential face to see first time you boot up the game. Dedede is a way bigger star anyway.
  • Toon Link. Kid would still be a secret if his game hadn't been re-released last year. Clones, to the back.
  • NOT Sonic, Mega Man or Pac-Man. I hope Sakurai learnt his lesson about making Sonic and Snake unlockable in Brawl.

Maaaaaybe Sheik, ZSS and Rosalina too, but I'm not sure. Would be a shame to see all the women bar Peach and WFT get shoved from the initial roster.

I've already said this, but locking characters in fighting games is a stupid idea.

inb4 Smash isn't a fighting game

Locking characters in a fighting game gives me something to keep playing for! Especially single player. I love it. I love unlocking progress. Especially since Smash has SO much single player content. I will really really really miss unlocking characters.

I understand that if you have a bunch of people over who already have a 'main', but then you boot it up and nobody is unlocked, that's a huge huge bummer.

There are solutions, I guess, but who knows if smash will implement them. (cheat codes, free dlc, etc).

Nah, but the animation was nice, and we did get booty. You saying you don't like booty?

That's a leap. Did I say I didn't like her trailer? :p

It's actually a dating simulator.

I'll be so sad if everyone is unlocked :(

Unlocking stuff in Smash Bros just feels good. It doesn't feel as tedious or bothersome like past fighters with unlockables characters too. So I'd miss it too. But Smash 4 content looks to be enough to satiate that longing with a number of modes with added depth. Plus, the newcomers look so incredibly varied that it'll be hard not to want to learn them all, Miis and Palutena especially.

So I think it'll be alright in the end with how likely it's looking.

Now that I think about it, Lucina's Dair could be ridiculous if it spikes from any hitbox. The hitbox area is large and there's little startup time.

There's already enough content to unlock in Smashwith trophies, music and stages.

Unlockables are a tradition and it's something I wouldn't want to see go, personally. I love playing Smash solo and I love having something to use for progression. That doesn't have to be characters, but there's few things as exciting as a CHALLENGER APPROACHING banner.

That said, I understand both sides. There needs to be an easy and accessible way of unlocking everything for tournament use, or at least a cheat code or toggle. Let everyone have their cake.

It's actually a dating simulator.

actually, that's Fire Emblem

but a Smash Date Sim would be good, trying to get Zelda's route you end up in Ganondorf's route

and well, it depends, if the game gives you only few characters to begin with, to the point that you have to get throu story/single player mode to unlock others characters one by one, well it's kind of sucky, I don't mind unlocking characters like you did in the sub space thing in brawl, since you played it once and had almost everyone unlocked, that is a good method imo

I hope Lucina isn't locked.
But if she is, I'll work hard to get her playable as soon as possible when I first get the game.

I'd actually be OK with a system similar to MVC2's unlock system. You earn points by playing and then go to the shop and buy the characters, similar to how you use coins to buy trophies in smash 4. That way, you can pick who you want to unlock first. Maybe a sillhouette or a number "Secret character 4!", so you know that if you want lucina, you unlock secret character 6 if you want to spoil yourself. Once you buy them, you have to challenge them to a fight, and if you win, you get them.

There's already enough content to unlock in Smashwith trophies, music and stages.

Characters are infinitely more rewarding to unlock than anything else. Stages are a distant second, with music in 3rd. Trophies aren't even a glint in the sunlight.

I'm personally on the side of unlocking fighters in Smash. Beating a fighter and unlocking them just feels really satisfying. I felt it was a shame you could unlock fighters in Brawl just through the SSE mode.

I, for one, would love the other Wii U Solo Mode to be Melee's adventure mode with branching paths.

But that seems reserved for classic mode, this time around. The 'branching' part, that is.

FTFY

Gah I cannot wait for info for what the Wii U version has in store for single player modes!

Return of Adventure Mode would be epic. Also if Palutena is unlockable, then she'll be one of the first I try and unlock besides Luigi and Ness.

actually, that's Fire Emblem

I'm guessing you're not being serious, but putting 2 units next to each other for a few turns to trigger a conversation is hardly what I'd call a dating simulation. :P

unless you like awkward dates filled with silence which then turns into friendly banter after a few minutes

All I want is an arcade mode inspired Classic Mode for Smash U, complete with opening cutscenes, rivals and endings with characters interacting with each other like in SSE and the CG newcomer videos.

I wonder how many of the newcomers we know about will be unlockable?

I know I randomly switched gears with the topic, but it just popped in my head. Because if we do get everyone from Brawl back besides the usual 3, there would be no hidden newcomers..

Villager, Wii Fit Trainer, Rosalina and Little Mac are on the box art(s), so those are definitely starters.
Pac-Man and Mega Man being unlockable seems plausible (since the 3rd-parties in Brawl also were unlockable).
Lucina is very likely going to be unlockable, while Marth seems to have moved into the starting roster (he's on a box art).
Robin could go either way, seems like he could be a starter. Greninja and Palutena as well, but I'm almost certain they're gonna be unlockable - they seem to be the kind of character that would be.

I also believe several Brawl newcomers are gonna be unlockable this time around. It seems like at least one of either Dedede or Meta Knight will be unlockable. Ike could be an unlockable as well, especially since Marth's a starter now. I wouldn't be surprised if Zero Suit Samus and Sheik ended up being unlockable. Toon Link and Luigi are definitely going to be unlockable as well.

I'd be fine with that method :D
I don't really enjoy the "play X amount of times on X stage" or "beat this level with X character".

Another aspect of unlock able characters Nintendo will probably consider is that unlocking everyone right off the bat is overwhelming to new players who just boot up the game. Unlocking them provides a trickle in of new characters for players to get used to, rather than throwing a 50 character screen at them and telling them to have fun.

It's less interesting, for sure, but it's a form of compromise between the two.

The best part about unlocking characters in 64/melee was playing the game for fun, and then randomly, out of nowhere, the new challenger banner appears. Totally unexpected, totally makes you flip out and excited. I want that excitement to come back. I know it never will thanks to the internet, so I'm willing to compromise.

I really don't think any of the revealed characters so far barring maybe the third parties are going to be unlockable.

That makes two of us. Fire Emblem having 4 characters (likely the entire series' representation) right off the bat does seem weird, and there's that comment when Sakurai revealed Luigi that implied he was unlockable but being shown regardless, but otherwise I feel confident on this.

I always had this feeling Sakurai was going to switch it up with who's unlockable this go 'round. Especially with Marth's reveal.

I agree with you in thinking Metaknight and Ike are going to be unlockable. I'd also like that IF both Ness and Lucas are in this game, then Ness should be reverted to starter status and Lucas be the unlockable.

Why not? We've seen like 40 of them.
As I said in an earlier post, I don't think we're seeing the entire roster prior to release, and if it isn't fully revealed then the I would think any unlockable characters would have been held off on (minus third parties for marketing reasons), especially ones like Meta Knight and Ike who's reveals weren't tied to any game release.

Basically I don't see the unlockables being half already revealed characters. I think the unlockable roster count, if there is one, is going to be low, lower than we're used to.

I just want to know the whole roster already. Shulk is the only remaining newcomer that I want that hasn't been deconfirmed yet so I just need to know if he is in or not.

THE WAITIN'

Starting roster will be at LEAST this:

Combined with this:

Which is 14. Obvious inclusions are Fox, Zelda, Bowser, and maybe some other vets that haven't been revealed yet, like Wario, and Ice climbers.

How big was brawl's initial roster? 22ish? I'd expect 20-30 starting.

I'd say anyone from the demos is a safe bet for starter character. Ideally anyone revealed thus far aside from the 3rd party characters is a starter character, but I'm starting to have my doubts. =/

That's making the assumption that the starting roster in both will be the same! It's a perfect way to make the two different with little to no effort on their part.
