Super Smash Bros. for 3DS & Wii U Thread 12: Gwah, hah. Welcome to the Bowser's game.

Oh please.

-does some highly morally questionable actions in the name of Daein
-was called out on those highly morally questionable actions at that moment

you do realize Mary Sues don't get called out, right

also half of these are either really random (average in gameplay, as if it would've helped if she were broken like Haar), or subverted in part 3 entirely

And you do realize I did not call her a Mary Sue but close to one. Meaning she isn't one. Still for me I dislike her. Which is my opinion just as you are entitled to your own.

So I know we don't really know anything about how every character will stack up against one another but how do you guys feel about the potential viability of characters? As in at a competitive level does anyone in here think there will be a few stand outs that darn near ruin competition, do you think there will be a large amount of viable characters(20+) or maybe just a few viables(10 or less?).

I feel like after Brawl and no major story mode to look after Sakurai has a better eye for what could potentially be over powered or even underpowered. The demo will probably feel so different compared to the final product. Well character wise anyway and I have much higher hopes that there will be no MetaKnights this time around and no Brawl Ganondorfs.

Well if you go by the internet who hates whoever wins, bowser and ZSS are way op.

Honestly though, it's hard to tell. We haven't seen much 1v1 where i think a lot of other characters will shine vs ffa.

Explain Marth and Lucario then.
Hell, explain Captain Falcon.
Marth is on the boxart, he's a starting character.

Captain Falcon was a starting character in Melee, it can happen again.

Characters have gone from unlockable to starter in the past (see Captain Falcon above), no reason to think Lucario is an exception.

No way this game is going to have 39 starters. I'd say many of the revealed characters (Luigi, Toon Link, Captain Falcon) are going to be unlockable.

Melee had more starting characters than there were characters in the first Smash period.

Brawl had a starting roster approximately as large as Melee's (one less).

This is hardly unprecedented. I feel pretty strongly that the only revealed characters that are potentially unlockable are the third party characters.

I’m still having a hard time believing that characters like Luigi and Toon Link will be unlockable. They were revealed a year before release, they show up regularly in screen shots, and they’re playable in public demos. We know everything there is to know about those two — what is there to gain from them being locked away? The element of surprise/discovery is nonexistent. There’s just no point to it.

You can't throw 40 characters at a new player, that's ridiculous and not something Sakurai or Nintendo would do.

Marvel vs. Capcom and Tekken don't have a problem with "throwing 40 characters at a new player," and "that's not something Sakurai would do" is hearsay. You aren't Sakurai -- you don't know what he's thinking.

As long as Wario and a Mother character get revealed in the site before the game's release, I'm good.

Wario especially. I've waited long enough, dammit.

What if Sakurai had everyone unlockable in multiplayer, but restricted them to their regular movesets until you performed some action to unlock their custom moves?

Based on what? Plenty of fighting games throw rosters like that at new players. Sakurai has increased the starting roster in every Smash so far by a rather sizable number and has never properly unveiled unlockable characters prior to launch outside of third parties.

And Marvel vs Capcom and Tekken don't have the casual appeal Smash does. When I played MVC for the first time, it was really overwhelming, and part of the reason I never went back to it. Smash isn't like it, they want to ease you into new characters.

The purpose of locking characters is not hiding them from the player anymore. It's to provide a sense of progression, as with stages, music and trophies. I think Sakurai himself made a similar remark before Brawl release.

I think you're reading your own preferences into the developers. Who is this "they" and could you provide examples of them saying they want to ease you into new characters? Because I've certainly never heard this sentiment from Sakurai.

How? People will more than like go with who they're familiar with anyway lol.
This is assuming you're familiar with someone. And if you're not, a giant wall of characters deters you. Smash is a casual game made for everyone.

There will be unlockables that have been revealed. Marth will probably be the only who gets bumped to starter.
