Assuming it is the same name that I read earlier, twitter was blowing up with death threats aimed at the guy well after it became known it was the wrong person.

It's sad.

Death threats are a crime and should be treated that way. Put every one of those twitter posters on community service

Couple of black cops too! Racial harmony at last.

Amazing what can happen, when the entire world is watching...

Just to be clear, this is the St. Louis city police getting ready for a planned march and vigil in downtown St. Louis. NOT ferguson or county cops. We will see how that goes tonight.

THIS is the scene in ferguson right now at "ground zero"

It will probably be a non-event as far as police violence goes.

Beautiful day here in STL, btw.

Tips For Being and Unarmed Black Teen

With riots raging in Ferguson, Missouri following the shooting death by police of an unarmed African-American youth, the nation has turned its eyes toward police brutality, social injustice, and the continuing crisis of race relations throughout the U.S. Here are The Onion’s tips for being an unarmed black teen in America:

Shy away from dangerous, heavily policed areas.

Avoid swaggering or any other confident behavior that suggests you are not completely subjugated.

Be sure not to pick up any object that could be perceived by a police officer as a firearm, such as a cell phone, a food item, or nothing.

Explain in clear and logical terms that you do not enjoy being shot, and would prefer that it not happen.

Don’t let society stereotype you as a petty criminal. Remember that you can be seen as so much more, from an armed robbery suspect, to a rape suspect, to a murder suspect.

Try to see it from a police officer’s point of view: You may be unarmed, but you’re also black.

Avoid wearing clothing associated with the gang lifestyle, such as shirts and pants.

Revel in the fact that by simply existing, you exert a threatening presence over the nation’s police force.

Be as polite and straightforward as possible when police officers are kicking the shit out of you.

Via the Onion with amazingly great tips

There's apparently a march in Baltimore, too. I wonder how many marches are scheduled, and where.

Exactly why releasing the actual person's name is a horrible idea.

Because a large portion of the country wants his fucking head? I'd be okay with them waiting to release his name until after he's arrested and in jail awaiting trial.

"O H..."

go bucks

I think the fear was that the name would never be released and the whole thing would be swept under the rug.

Make no mistake this is about race I'm not disregarding that at all but the more this goes on it's also becoming about the role of authority and abuse of power/corruption which is something that affects all of us.

Probably a lot.

IDK, on one hand I kind of feel like going down there. On the other, I sort of feel like white people showing up LTTP after all the real shit went down are kinda fake. Real easy to stand there with a sign when the cops haven't even shown up yet.

Like do I want to go there to support the people of ferguson or to get some pics of people getting shot with teargas. Conflicted.

I'd submit that race effects us all, too. but yes, this is also about abuse of authority, militarized police, and a willingness for a large portion of the country to look away when it's an "other" having his dead body crammed in an SUV.

Probably a lot.

I imagine protesters would be happy for any support. The civil rights movement in America needs everyone to stand up. And they can always hide behind you when the shooting starts. If there's one near me, I may head out this evening.

What I like about this scene is that all races are present. I think it's great to see some white people there supporting the cause.

The latter is really the only reason why this is getting so much attention. Had this been only about race it would've been swept under the rug so fast the broom would've broke.

EDIT: smh @ that image above ^^

GOTTA GET THEM CLICKS.

Not a "We'd like to take a moment to urge everyone to pay attention to the situation in Ferguson right now, as it's frightening, unfortunate and shameful.", cause that'd be the right thing to do! Can't have that!

Filth.

Thanks for reminding me. Link changed to donotlink version, cause fuck them.

Yo Dream Drop what's up with "do not link" urls?

When you are discussing or alerting others to a website that promotes a fraud, scam, cult or other questionable business and you link to that site, search engines will (after a while) improve the offending site's rank.

Therefore, more people will find these shady websites, and will be exposed to their content without getting the proper context.

Fuck helping their page rank or giving them ad revenue.

And yes, I consider Kotaku a shady website and I consider click baiting a questionable business practice.

B-B-But we've got that one guy who posts here who isn't like that right?! #notallkotakus

Super off topic, but I agree.

In any case, that vox piece is amazing and I've sent it to everyone I know. Very good timeline of events. Information I didn't know myself, and I've been watching since Sunday.

Same here.
So amazing that it boggles the mind that Vox is the same company that built Polygon

The Onion: Tips For Being An Unarmed Black Teen

HOLY SHIT...

I feel bad for laughing as hard as I am. Onion on point, as usual. Anyone see Rep King's delightful comment?

http://www.msnbc.com/rachel-maddow-show/steve-king-and-continental-origins

Rep. Steve King appeared on Newsmax TV yesterday, where host J.D. Hayworth asked him about the rising tensions in Ferguson, Missouri and the call by members of the Congressional Black Caucus for the Department of Justice to conduct an independent investigation because of concerns about a history of racial profiling by the local police department.

King, of course, saw no need for such an investigation, claiming that these members of the CBC are basically “saying don’t enforce the law,” linking the issue to the sporadic looting and vandalism that has taken place by asserting that there is no need to racially profile those responsible for those actions because they are all black.

“This idea of no racial profiling,” King said, “I’ve seen the video. It looks to me like you don’t need to bother with that particular factor because they all appear to be of a single origin, I should say, a continental origin might be the way to phrase that.”
