Oculus Rift DK2 Thread

Got the rift this morning, finally had some time to test it.

Let's get to the point: LFS is amazing. Perfectly playable, and better than any other possible display setup.

Now: do I buy Elite Dangerous? It sure is tempting.

Oh, by the way: someone mentioned a Matrix demo. Any link?
I think you're referring to Digital Rain, it's just Matrix-like green text raining down in blackness. A good way to highlight the OLED contrast but otherwise not very interesting.

The one Matrix demo I know about is literally just the black screen with the green text raining down. If there's something beyond that, I'm unaware. Best resource for demos that I've found is the stickies post in the Oculus subreddit. Lots to try there and updated daily.

Edit: beaten!

Somebody made a demo of the Morpheus "what is real?" scene, but that was for DK1. For DK2 I think it's just the Matrix code rain demo.

Half Life 2 is so much fun with the Rift. Easily the best experience that i had with DK2 yet after E:D. This game is gonna see a revival when CV1 hits. Even in this early, slightly glitchy stage it works surprisingly well.

Tried HL2 in extended mode. Looks amazing in 3D, but I had no positional or rotational tracking whatsoever. The camera didn't turn on. If I can just get that working, I have a feeling it will be even more amazing.

I played in extended mode aswell and head tracking worked here. I added -dev -vr -console to the launch options. Maybe one of them makes a difference?

Got HL2 to running. Does the virtual reality mode in the video options (in HL2 menu) do anything? I've tried it off and on once and didn't notice anything.

Install Steam VR from Library/Tools in Steam. Opt into the beta branch (right click>properties>Betas>Beta-Steam VR). Start HL2, Go into gfx options, enable VR, then activate VR from the main menu option. The intro was glitchy for me, couldn't see much but from when the train arrived everything worked well. Only minimal judder, chromatic abberation is a bit strong. But other that it works great. can play it with no issues as far as game mechanics goes.

Thanks a bunch, looking forward to giving it a go.

Haven't tried it yet but appreciate the post!

HL2 in dk2 is pretty damn awesome once you get low persistence working. I fired up Ravenholm and felt very immersed. The creepy atmosphere went to 11. Also the positional tracking is great for looking down the sight of guns and studying weapon details. I was spellbound just gawking at the Magnum from different angles. I can see myself doing another full playthrough now it's that cool :)

Can't wait for the hlvr folks to implement a version for dk2. Hydras plus the positional tracking is going to be great.

Edit: nm seems as though hlvr IS up and running with dk2! http://www.reddit.com/r/hlvr/comments/2csd6r/half_life_vr_134b/?sort=confidence

Ive been messing around with Dolphin vr quite a bit and now all i can think about is how amazing it would be if someone did the same thing for nullDC or any other Dreamcast emu so that i can play Rez in my Rift.
It might not even be possible but I think i remember someone making a 3d plugin for one of the Dreamcast emus a long time ago.

Ive already went so far to open up Rez in pcsx2 while the vrplayer app is on and it was a pretty awesome experience.

Can not wait to fire up Ravenholm when I get my DK2!

Too bad it still hasn't even shipped despite taking my money a week ago. I ordered on the day it was announced, this seems a tad ridiculous!

Can't wait to try HL2 tonight!

I bought Flaming Cliffs 3 last night, apart from the judder and low frame rate.. Has to be a bug with extended mode and killing the service. Hopefully can get more performance because I'm dropping down to sub 30 fps on low on the runway (i2500k @ GHz, 8gb ram, GTX 770 4gb OC). Even with those issues the F-15 is crazy! You can look behind you and watch the inlets thrust vector air over the turbine while flying.. you feel SO high, doing barrel rolls can make you dizzy because your brain is actually tricked into thinking you are 50,000 feet high. Its the most stunning sense of scale I've had in the rift so far. Elite is crazy cool but its in space so don't have any real points of reference for scale other than planets, with DCS I actually feel like I'm in the air.

So why is it that some games/demos don't activate the IR Rift sensor? I've had basically zero issues with most demos but one or two that are supposedly working don't turn the sensor on.

Half Life 2 is THE game for VR right now. Leaning over and aiming down the sights of the guns and blasting fools is 11/10. Feels incredible.

Ordered a DK2 a few days after orders went live. I've been worried from all the impressions here--smearing blacks, decreased FOV, and so on. So, I was pretty anxious to try the DK2 at SIGGRAPH yesterday--if it wasn't great, would I cancel my order? Have buyer's remorse?

Hell no.

It was fantastic.

Totally immersed in seconds. I never even remembered to check for the issues I was worried about. I was in too deep.

Makes me wonder what other older games can be reinvigorated for VR. I always assumed that VR will need a complete new way of thinking about how to design gameplay mechanics for it. But seeing now how well HL2 works pretty much out of the box (minus the small tweaks that were made to the ui) there must be plenty of other gems from the past. This level of otherwise now outdated gfx also still works great for OR because you can't make out too much texture or normal detail anyway.

Much like Quake 2, I felt a little queasy with Half-Life 2 after about twenty minutes. Wasn't as bad this time though, possibly because I used the mouse versus a 360 controller per earlier suggestions in the thread. Found the experience quite cool although rough around the edges (worst chromatic aberation issues I've seen yet, for example).

I like how the UI is handled (how it moves along with your perspective), although I have trouble focusing on things around the edges of the screen so actually reading health/ammo was pretty much impossible for me.

I actually just received order tracking information half an hour after posting this...

This wait is killing me!

After a lot of trouble I finally managed to get HL2 to work on DK2. The problem I'm not having is the arms and guns seem to be in the wrong place. Is this something on my end, or with the player models for VR? I played a lot on DK1 and do not recall this problem. Any help appreciated. Thanks.

Carr to explain how you got it set up? I tried the big picture fix for steamvr but with no success.

I do not know if this made things work, but I did go in and re-verify the integrity of the files for SteamVR in Tools. All of the sudden HL VR option started working with Rift in Extended mode. Beginning very choppy but later save files loaded up and silky smooth. Some of the enemies rushing my face making me recoil IRL. Very intense feeling.

HL2 looks so cool in DK2, until I turn my head. The blurriness is rly jarring when I move my head around. Is there a setting that lowers blurriness when you move your head?

whaaaat holyy shit

thought mine would be September by the earliest!

I can't even get the game to work, i see the game normally on my pc monitor and some weird glitchy images that look nothing like the game on the rift.

Any ideas? I'm talking about Hl2 btw.

add "-freq 75" to the launch options to force 75 hz.

Any idea about the judder when looking around in the Oculus?

I have -freq 75 -refresh 75 in the launch options, but when I open net_graph 1 in the console it shows 299 FPS.

I'm assuming because its not locked at 75 there is judder from the head tracking. When moving with the mouse it is perfectly smooth.

Did you set it to the "beta" option?

This is my problem. R9 290. Going to see what the launcher is and maybe setup a RadeonPro config for it

The judder is theorized to be a problem with the camera. Oculus claims there is a software fix coming for the judder, which lends credibility to the theory. Since the judder occurs predictably when examined closely (i.e. it's not random jerks) the solution would appear to be to simply counter in the opposite direction for the expected judder.

But at this point, it's simply something up with the Dev kit itself.

Yeah, I read about that on reddit. Something about the camera. It's odd though, some people have the issue, others don't. I wonder what may be the culprit.

I tried a RadeonPro profile and no dice. Ha, main reason I'm not ordering Elite:Dangerous is that jutter is apparent in a lot of demos.

finally got my shipping notice. is there a site that details the recommend first steps? i apologize as i know this information has been covered in this very thread, but i was hoping it had been compiled somewhere.

Hmmm....weird that this is only one of the demos I noticed it manifest. Almost everything else tracks very smoothly via headtracking.

I was stoked to hear this was playable in dk2 but the stuttery tracking ruins the immersiveness to the point of not even being worth it for me. Sucks...

I have Hydras that I've literally used for all of 10 minutes in over 2 years, haha. Maybe I should try HL VR....

At first I thought HL2 seemed blurrier (even with motion blur off) than Quake 2, but now I'm thinking that it's just because HL2 is a more visually busy game. Am I wrong?
