Help me pick an MMO

I've recently got the itch to start playing an MMO, but I don't know where to start. The only MMO I've ever played for more than an hour or two is FFXIV on PS4. I've been looking at re-upping that, buying GW2, subbing to WoW, or playing The Old Republic.

I already own FF, so I'd just need to buy game time. I've wanted to play WoW for a while, mostly just because it's such a phenomenon that I kind of want in on. GW2 is appealing because there's no sub fee. And I was only looking at SWTOR because I really like Star Wars. I mostly just want a game that will give me good value for my money, not get old quick, will feel like an huge adventure rather than a chore, and has a good community here on Gaf that I can be a part of.

So what should I go with Gaf?

WoW has solid game mechanics. If you're looking to get into end-game, probably one of the better choices.

GW2 has better exploration and questing (also prettier). I'm not a fan of its end game (no trinity), but others definitely are.

TOR uh...has a voice acted story, I suppose.

FFXIV if thats what you're looking for. It has a huge GAF community, moreso than any of the other games youve mentioned. Theres a lot of WoW players as well, but they're spread all over the place, while a good 80% of the GAF folks that play XIV are on the same server (Ultros)

I just subbed to WoW a month ago and can honestly say its worth it, the amount of content in this game is astounding. Get a buddy to play with and its worth it even more, refer him through refer a friend and you get friend exp and you level faster. With Warlords of Draenor coming out in november, you can get a feel for the game before then and then boost a character to level 90 to jump straight into the new expansion.

I think I may have picked the wrong server when I started (can't remember which I went with though). Doesn't it cost to move servers after the fact?

WoW has 10 years behind it. I'd say that's a pretty good pick, especially with the new expansion hitting soon. You seem to like FFXIV as well and that game is VERY similar to WoW.

Aside from FFXIV and DCUO I haven't really played any of the other modern mmos so I couldn't really say much on SWTOR or GW2

Guild Wars 2 hits these marks, in my opinion. It's also 50% off at the moment.

It's really nothing like what I've played of TOR, though. Also, it doesn't have the healer/tank/dps trinity, which I know is a turn off for many. It still has a great slew of content and lots of free updates.

Come hang.

Tonight's the night we sacrifice all the lalafells in GAF to Ifrit.

I've recently been playing SWTOR again, they have made major improvements and the game is a crapton of fun, with great customization's. FFXIV is still a ton of fun and the quality of content is top notch with a great overall story for an MMO. WoW still is WoW, not much to say there, still great but still WoW.

I currently have a bias, because I've been in a huge star wars mood(with the TV series news and what not), and me being an over all star wars fanboy. It also helps that SWTOR is great. So I'd say if you are a Star Wars fan like me, play it, if not from your main choices I'd say play WoW if you want a trinity system GW2 if you dont.

GW2 - For no subscription.
WoW - For number of players and content.
FFXIV - For good gameplay mechanics.

But really imo the most important aspect is which world do you want to explore in? My personal favorite is still WoW because I'm a fan of the Warcraft setting.

I will probably be the only person saying these but:

Secret World is fucking great for a good deal of the time. Super world, all voice acted, interesting atomsphere.
It is easy enough to get into and then you can get more complex if you want to.
Lots of special custom skills and such so it feels fairly fresh for a long period of time.
Simply huge in scale when you take everything into account.
Tons of new episodes and packs. Released like comics they all fit within the world and are all voice acted and have full cut-scenes which adds a good deal of atmosphere to them.

Neverwinter turned out to be way better than a free to play has a right to be. Spent countless hours in that game.
Didn't pay for anything still played for weeks. Always new content.

SWTOR is amazing right now. What a turn around. Seriously a great mmo.

Star Trek-
A fresh direction, almost unlimited playablity. Tons of improvements, tons of player made scenarios that make scenarios in actual developer made games look like utter shit.

id tell you to go Guild Wars 2 if you want it. you can either play hardcore or casual and we got a real good community here http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=820204

we are very active too, and very friendly, always ready to help even if you are a veteran.

the good points of guild wars is that

1 - it doesnt bind you to the trinity

2 - it does not require you to dedicate amounts of time of your life to get to be a decent player

3 - its much more simplified, yet the level of depth that the system offers is amazing.

4 - no expansions, in place of it we have episodes and feature packs, episodes being events in the story of the game, making everything feel like there is always something going on with the world and feature packs are when they introduce new systems or features. much like a expansion, only not in a single pack, and they are free.

5 - no infinite really long and time consuming gear grind.

but well, if you are looking for instanced raids, we dont have those, but we do have stuff that is in the same level of coordination and fun.

im sure the people from the guild would be willing to clarify things and point you much more content. I hope my post helped you in any way.

Same here! I have a DECENT laptop but idk what I should try. Guild Wars 2 always looked phenomenal but is it to graphically sustaining? How about Secret World?

WoW has an insane amount of content for the price you pay. Also, I've tried everything out there and I still think nothing can beat WoW when it comes to (endgame) PvE and polish. It can be a very addicting game though.

If you decide you want to play SWTOR, send me a PM. I have an unused game code you can have, which since the game is F2P now it just gives you the month free.

Watched an hour of videos about WoW earlier today after the expansion video, been out for three years but a part of me badly wants to go back. Probably dip my toes back into one of the f2p games to scratch the itch some, that's what I'd recommend to anyone before they start dropping a bunch of money on subscriptions.

As someone who doesn't play any, it looks like Guild Wars 2 and Final Fantasy XIV have the best reception and most active communities outside of WoW. WoW is the biggest by far still though and has 10 years of subscription content in it.

Based on everyone's responses so far, it seems to be between WoW and FF, with GW2 maybe being a possiblity.

I just checked an my character in FF is on the Malboro server. I know it costs like $10 or $15 to do a world transfer, but could I just make a new character on Ultros? Or can I only make Malboro characters from here on out? He's only lvl 15, so if I could just start over on Ultros without having to pay anything I might do that.
I really wouldn't go with WoW if you never played or own it yet.

Wildstar is solid choice if you're into dungeon.
I've played the trial for an hour or two, enjoyed it a bit. But that was just the first couple zones, so it was really hard to tell if I'd enjoy it in the long run.

GW2 was my first and only MMO, after making a point of avoiding them when everyone else was playing WoW through high school / college.

I still try to play whenever I can, GafGuild is a great time, and if I can't play for awhile
especially right now, sorry GafGuild :'(
no big deal, I paid everything upfront.

I think my favorite thing is the diversity of it - I didn't know what "end game" was all about, so I played the game casually, enjoyed the ride all the way to 80, made new friends, and still have TONS of things I haven't even touched yet. I really enjoy afternoons where I get to play this game.

If not Guild Wars 2 now, it'll be Guild Wars 2 later once you regret the others...

But in all seriousness: no sub, great gameplay (since gameplay comes first), constant stream of content, massive GAF community, you can play as much or as little as you want, and about a hundred other reasons that I feel like I've typed a thousand times here on GAF already.

For $24, even if you end up not digging it much, you're not losing out. And you can always come back to it later without needed to rebuy or resub.

If you're looking for something different and more player driven then Eve Online.

I cant go back to other MMOs after it. Its rough to start but if you find some friends to explain things its great. You can always try the demo.. and ask me if you need any help.

It's $18 to transfer over iirc. If you don't mind starting over you can just make a new character on Ultros. Even the lowest sub plan includes 8 character slots limited to 1 per sever.

Also be aware that starting next Friday there's a Free Login campaign that lasts until September 1st.

How many people in the guild (active) on Ultros?
It was 390+ last time I checked and anyone who hasn't logged in the last 60 days is kicked out to make room for new people. Usually there's around 80 people online.

ArcheAge is looking really good. I just started playing the beta weekend today and it's already very enticing.

Someone is finally making a more sandbox-y MMO other than EVE, and I think this one is going to take in quite a few players. It'll be free to play when it launches, with options for transactions and subscribing. At first glance it seems they're doing a good job of that model.

Does anyone know how long the GW2 sale is going for? I might pick it up on Tuesday if it's still 50% off.

Oh, that's awesome! I'll make a new character on Ultros when the free login starts and see if I get into it, and resub if I do.

Are PS4 players in the same world as PC and PS3? I want to play with some of you guys!

Oh okay cool, was just curious how it compared to our 471 total / 60 to 80 primetime as well :)

SWTOR is great in that the story elements help it not get old. being F2P, it also means you can just go until you get through the story of one character and then decide if you want to keep onto endgame, try another character, or try another MMO.

Its also come a long way since its initial launch, so don't mind the people hating on it too much. Its not revolutionary, but its solid. Its basically WoW with good story elements when you get down to it.

Yes, the game uses shared servers so everyone plays with each other.

thhhhhhhhataway

How good of a PC/Laptop, do you need to run GW2 lowest settings? Secret World?

Guild Wars is fairly low requirements but that is expected.
Secret World a bit higher if using D9 and much higher if going to D11 but still doable. D9 runs on some fairly low laptops now with specific settings.

we have guildies who swear they can run the game on some really shitty laptops.

Secret World is more of a hog.

Running meaning, having good performance? For reference(My Laptop):

Left 4 Dead All Low Settings: 60 Fps
Left 4 Dead 2 All Low Settings: 50+ Fps

All I care about at this point is performance.

I've played WoW in the past but I can't really imagine going back to a sub based MMO after buying GW2. And like people have said, it's 50% off and play forever.

Wildstar is the only correct answer.

He said a game that wasn't a chore, didn't get old quick, and had a large GAF community. Wildstar is the exact opposite of those things.

If I were the Op I'd pick FFXIV or WoW. Definitely WoW if I had never played it before due to the sheer amount of content and the fact that the gameplay is still some of the tightest in the genre. ToR is F2P so you can always see if you like that without spending a dime as well. GW2 is an alright game if you don't like loot, progression, or interesting group PvE content, but it bored me to tears and the things commonly considered positives by fans (no progression, two week content, no trinity) actually hurt the game more than it helps.

FFXIV has a large and thriving GAF community.

And it's a good game. I'm a little too burned out on traditional MMOs, but it is a very high quality version of one.

I played a shit ton of FF14 but stopped mostly due to the shitty guild I was with (to be fair I was late to raid nights pretty often). I might come back eventually.

Are there any MMOs that have good end game raids (as in they have good/fun party mechanics) outside of WoW and FF14? Those are really the only ones I know of and I'm not aware and can't find good info on others.

edit: My friend and I have been looking for one for a while (after we left that shitty FF14 guild and quit) and don't really want to deal with a sub again for a little while.
