Phil Spencer: MS will spend money on marketing and developing Rise of the Tomb Raider

SE is stupid but no where near that stupid. Those franchises will have 80+% of their sales on PS4.

To be fair I underestimated SE's stupidity last gen and going forward I will not be surprised by anything they do. I'm 100% certain they are allergic to money at this point.

What about North America / Europe timed exclusivity? :P

Now THAT could happen; Microsoft has clearly shown they have big pockets with the TR move, so them giving more money to Square to make those games be timed exclusives in NA/EU is possible.

Then again, the PS4 is region free (like how the PS3 and Vita are), so if Square doesn't region lock the PS4 version, mass waves of PS4 owners could just import the tittle :l.

Granted, I really don't want that to be the case (I want a PS4 for a few reasons and KH3 is one of them :D), and considering how successful FF and KH are on PS platforms (I think more then TR? Not super sure there :l), Square would be stupid to make another deal like the TR one again.

I think they saw from this backlash that even if the money is good, the backlash could be an issue XD!

The amount of melt down that would happen due to that XD! I don't think Square Enix is THAT stupid to pull something like that :D.

Between FFXV stupidly long development cycle (being a PS3 exclusive but now a multiplatform game) and KH3 being closely linked to Sony (with the KH HD Collections ONLY being on PS3).....it would be counter-intuitive for them to get Microsoft to have them as timed-exclusives.

Besides, those are games that will push PS4's in Japan; Sony may not be willing to pay for 3rd party exclusives like how Microsoft has been doing but they would have no issues paying to make sure they land on the PS4 (PS4 needs JP support to sell over there and these games are sure-fire ways to make that happen).
Square is very stupid though so i wouldnt be suprised. Besides money talks..

They're being vague and misleading on purpose, it is obviously a timed exclusive. If it wasn't Microsoft would be extremely clear about it and would make sure everyone knew.

It most likely won't, but this is the best chance I'm ever going to have for the series to be replaced with something that has actual quality gameplay and game design again. It's like a very low odds, but before there was 0% in the near future, now there's like a 5% chance. I'll take any improvement on my odds here, any outlook that means damaging this new fake TR abomination and forcing the company to reevaluate its priorities. I like my platforming with actual challenge, my tomb raider with limited combat engagements, and exploration and trap/obstacle navigation being paramount the same way actual, meaningful puzzle design was.

If that makes me an "old fart", I'm the oldest of all farts. >:)

they chased uncharted with tomb raider 2013 and will continue to do so with rottr

Looks like they might have trouble funding a sequel with those sales. >_>

People don't seem to realize something...

Why would you be laughing at MS? There's zero confusion for Xbox one owners here. We know we will be playing tomb raider holiday 2015. The only people the vague statements could possibly upset would be Ps4 owners, maybe PC owners. Phil Spencer doesn't care if people that don't own xboxes are salty. This isn't a problem for Microsoft to deal with, it's really an issue with CD and SE.

The more Phil Spencer upsets Ps4 owners the better a job he is doing. That's just the nature of the competition unfortunately. If you are completely anti Xbox but get upset when an exclusive game or content isn't available to you, then I think this is going to be a veeery long generation for you indeed.

Not just PS4 owners but PC owners to, if his job is to piss everyone else off that they don't buy your console, then that is one shit job.

Sounds pretty cut and tie to me, Its more or less going to be an Exclusive for an extended period of time. You wont invest so much into the production of a game to have it jump ship to another platform a few months after release. The third TR game or close to its development is probably when the exclusivity will end. Will this shift many consoles for the Xbox when it comes to that time, it probably will. The average gamer does not keep up with news like this or joins gaming forums, they just go where the games are and when it gets to holiday 2015 its going to be like.. " oh xbox one gets TR first.. better buy that then" plain and simply.

Tomb Raider doesn't have that kind of pull.

Not when Tomb Raider an established franchise hits at least 6 million sold. It's not like they're starting a new IP where they have no idea of how much appeal the franchise is going to have.

Look matey, I have no idea. I just assume if it costs 50 million dollars to make these freaking things, and another 50-75 million on the marketing, then it has to hurt the wallet, when the Japanese games industry is in the toilet and apparently 6 million was not what they had hoped for. But I don't know.

Who knows. That's the thing. it's all speculation. All companies are about greedy so SE must have had a good reason.

*sigh* Can someone just explain this in plain English for fuck's sake? Is that too much to ask?

Is it a timed exclusive, a console exclusive or a full exclusive?
Is MS publishing or is SE?

These are not difficult questions to answer and yet every time you have opened your mouths we end up with more questions instead of less.
As it is now nobody is sure if anything because every word out of your mouths is aimed to obfuscate instead of elucidate. THIS IS DOING YOU NO FAVORS! You are just making yourselves look either sleazy or grossly incompetent. Stop the BS and answer the damn questions! FFS

Go read his interview on Eurogamer. He clearly states it's coming to Xbox One and 360. In the same paragraph he says the deal has a duration.

There's absolutely nothing cryptic about it. It's not his job to discuss SE's plans for the game after the deal expires, why would he know that and what's in it for him to discuss it?

The little bastards did it to us again. The sons of guns.

they're being altruistic. they're helping break the majority of gamers addiction to shitty tomb raider. in its place will be their love and adoration of a time when Tomb Raider was about meaningful, challenging platforming and exploration, sprawling, epic multiroom puzzles that required lateral thinking and quick reflexes, obstacle and trap rooms that make your skin stand on end from the tension. A time when no one needed the endless sounds of bullets to be entertained and all they had to comfort them was that haunting Lara Croft scream as she plummets into the blackness below, another mistimed jump spelling your doom for the 12th time.

You'll see. You'll ALLLLL see.

*rocks back and forth*

Not really. Any given PS4 owner is a potential Xbox One owner. I wouldn't be going out of my way to piss people off personally but I guess that's why I'm just a normal person and not head of Xbox.

They are not interested in people that own both consoles. Those buy the better version of multiplatforms. They are interested in the 150 million that haven't bought either console yet. And seriously the most vocal people complaining about the deal and transparency are those that wouldn't buy an X1 in the first place.

But new Lara, man... don't you want to protect her?

Wouldn't Sony know if the game is being made for their system? Why not ask them?

And I'm beyond tired of the terrible PR speak. The only thing I hear clearly is "Don't buy an Xbox".

What's more absurd is that the press is flaunting what MS is bringing to the table as their "marketing power"... MS Marketing has been a disaster for the last couple years... especially on gaming.

Yes how could he possibly know that SE is planning on putting the game out on other platforms when the period of exclusivity ends? Because that never happens.

To be less sarcastic, it's really SE's responsibility to tell us what the duration is. But the terms of the deal probably muzzle them from being able to do that, which is pretty assy.

The 150 million (which is probably more 100 million) getting advise on what to buy from the 15 million that have already bought a console though.

How can people even consider a possibility of FF XV and KH III being timed exclusive to the Xbox One?
Disney probably won't allow KH 3 exclusivity, but I want to see SE make Final Fantasy exculive to Xbox. It would be worth it just to watch them torpedo the franchise.

Phil Spencer absolutely should care if people that own video game systems but don't own Xboxes don't like this move, because he wants those people to buy an Xbox.

It's not like buying a PS4/PC legally precludes you from buying an Xbox One.

Do you realize how insane this is? You are saying that Phil has no regard for a massive amount of gamers - in fact, the majority right now - who could potentially in the future buy an XBO or a future Microsoft Xbox product. In what bizarro world do you think this is a smart thing to do? Why is it that some companies can choose not to mistreat massive amounts of customers, but others can't? Why is that you or anyone else feel the need to defend such shitty practices, when you were always going to get the game anyway?

As I said, I'm happy Tomb Raider is going exclusive on XBO, means a chance for the franchise to die now that it has been turned into AAA checklist cinematic garbage. But these posts are just silly.

Who is being mistreated? Seriously? What shitty practice? Funding a game from a third party? Sony is doing it with Bloodborne, Nintendo is doing it with Bayonetta 2. Its entirely possible that square sought a publisher for Tomb Raider as they completely mismanaged the budget of the game last time around. You're completely overreacting.

Piss off potential customers to the point where they want nothing to do with your product. Genius.

So I guess they now purchased full console exclusivity on TR. This means no PS3/PS4 version. PC will definitely come down the line. Sheeeeet! Square done goofed and this deal works out a lot better for MS than the original "timed" exclusivity. Or Spencer could be lying through his teeth again.

I don't know, they made 22 million people buy a goddamn Kinect sensor. Sounds like marketing did a great job. When you're 499 and the other console is 399 and more powerful there's nothing marketing can do to spin it.

You are wrong, its timed. Phil is just trying to confuse everyone.

I wonder if Square is dumb enough to sign a term that doesn't let them announce when they are launching the game on other platforms...
