Phil Spencer: MS will spend money on marketing and developing Rise of the Tomb Raider

^^^^ this is a perfectly acceptable answer. It isn't clearly deceptive or confusing and explains the situation without any bullshit. I fail to see how perpetuating the image of sleaziness or incompetence is better for the company at this point.

It's what he said. Please, read.

From the OP article:

that sounds pretty clear to me

he doesn't have to say its coming to PS4. he doesn't have to even say how long the exclusivity is for. just fucking say "debut on xbox" or something like that.

If Final Fantasy XV was a timed XB1 exclusive I would never buy an SE game again. Would be seriously fucked to announce a game on one platform, take almost 10 years to make it then made it a timed exclusive on the opposite platform.

Who is being mistreated? Seriously?

Are we seriously once again going to go down this road for the 100th time?

Deceiving customers on power, exclusivity, ad buys, system features (importance of Kinect, Xbox TV) = mistreatment

There's a billion more I can pull up for you. Note a pattern: This is a company that things gamers are idiots and continually deceives them in an attempt to make their situation better. All companies are not out for our own good, but that doesn't mean we as consumers have to sit around and take it when they actively mistreat us or treat us like we're bloody fucking idiots.

Additionally, paying for exclusives to prevent other gamers from getting a well established franchise that has always come to other platforms is simply wrong, even though I'm glad they chose TR. It adds no value to XBO, only subtracts value from PC and PS gamers. No one should applaud such a thing.

Edit: I see you edited in more ->

Funding a game from a third party? Sony is doing it with Bloodborne, Nintendo is doing it with Bayonetta 2. Its entirely possible that square sought a publisher for Tomb Raider as they completely mismanaged the budget of the game last time around. You're completely overreacting.

The situation with Bloodborne and Bayonetta 2 is not even remotely similar. Additionally, we already have Kagari who confirmed SquareEnix needed zero dollars to release a massively budgeted TR sequel on multiple platforms; it was always going to be a reality. You may stay in your dreamworld if you like, of course.

I dunno know, man. Anyone who can get under the skin of console warriors in such a way ( Grrr he's SCUMBAG! I hate him, i want to kill his dog! you know, over a videogame!) is ok in my book.
Yeah I don't expect the pins to go anywhere, Phil is winning points in the console war, which is very important to people.

They didn't tell for a single title that I know of how long it's gonna be exclusive. Microsoft was more transparent in that regard with "holiday 2015".

no one gives a shit how long it is, they just want to know if it's actually timed or not. thats the issue that they aren't being up front about

Except Microsoft isn't doing it to a new IP or otherwise dead game. It's a game that was already known to be coming out either way for everyone. Their deal was to take away some of the planned platforms.

This is wrong. They claimed xbox only. That's a lot different than "CONSOLE DEBUT." Also the internet meltdown for the past week shows the exact opposite of your statement.

I don't want a port of that game anymore. MS being involved in the development of the game can mean a lot of things, including to enforce Xbox One quality across all plattforms, if it will be released later on PC/PS. The deal sounds more and more like it will be xbox only as a console.

I really enjoyed TR2013, but this was a total mess by squareenix. Spitting fans into the face, who have supported the IP on PC and PlayStation over a decade. I seriously hope the game will bomb on xbox.

MS is taking the brunt of the blow back. CD can just develop their game, take that money and then release on platforms as their deal with MS will allow.

This situation is literally Crystal D having their cake and eating it too.

Confirmed time at the bottom, ohhh nice.

AUGUST 15 UPDATE:

CrystalDynamics said:
Thank you for all of the feedback and questions. There has been a lot of coverage about Rise of the Tomb Raider, and a new round of articles followed Phil Spencer’s Eurogamer interview in which he confirmed that the exclusivity is timed. In case you haven’t read that article yet, you can do so here.

People don't seem to realize something...

Why would you be laughing at MS? There's zero confusion for Xbox one owners here. We know we will be playing tomb raider holiday 2015. The only people the vague statements could possibly upset would be Ps4 owners, maybe PC owners. Phil Spencer doesn't care if people that don't own xboxes are salty. This isn't a problem for Microsoft to deal with, it's really an issue with CD and SE.

The more Phil Spencer upsets Ps4 owners the better a job he is doing. That's just the nature of the competition unfortunately. If you are completely anti Xbox but get upset when an exclusive game or content isn't available to you, then I think this is going to be a veeery long generation for you indeed.

Easily the dumbest post here. I don't even know where to begin. Do yourself a favor and go to business school before you ever think about starting or leading a business. Simply put, that's not the way business works. You try to steal your competitor's clients, you don't piss them off.

Really the onus is on Crystal Dynamics and Square Enix to say if another version is planned. I don't really expect Phil Spencer to say "Yeah the PS4 edition is coming out in March, look forward to it guys!"

Unless, you know, Microsoft has a non-disclosure agreement with them that prevents them from talking about any other version until after Holiday 2015... *cough*

It sounds like the game is console exclusive if they are putting their own money into developing the game. Unless Microsoft will be letting a co-financed game onto other platforms, which seems unreasonable. It will eventually get a PC release, as the third-party exclusives for this gen seem to be doing, but otherwise, I doubt this will be on PS4 purely based on the wording.

Instead of asking Spencer, people should really hound SE and see exactly what they have to say. The game is getting a lot of attention based around this deal, which, to him, is more a good thing than a bad thing.

whoa...such a mess...

Pretty much guarantees my purchase of an Xbox one never happens.

Now I wonder if TR will get the TitanFall treatment and it's all you'll hear about for 3 months. I guess that's how you build a franchise up now, market the crap out of it.

Is it ok now to say that some of of that TF hype was manufactured? Or, am I a Sony conspiracy theorist? I think it was, and TR will now get the same treatment, and SE can't be happier there IP gets all this exposure at the costs of pissing off half the fans.

Don't even care about X1 at this point, just won't support TR no matter what now, not even a bargain bin price, I'll rent it from somewhere years after release, it's just not worth it.

I still can't figure this deal out. If TR goes up against Uncharted for holiday bucks, TR isn't going to sell a lot of hardware. So who wins in this deal exactly? Not the consumers, not Microsoft and not even squenix really, when you consider the lost sales potential on the dominate system this hardware cycle. Why.

This is... pretty damn clear.

Damn, the backlash keeps looking sillier and sillier. All the comparisons about it being okay in the case of co-development thrown out the window.

It's crazy how it continues to be ignored while people keep spewing how deceitful it all is. Unbelievable!
