I heard some report that Brown was running toward the officer, and the officer unloaded on him to try to stop him.
However, looking at those wounds, I don't think you're going to be charging at someone after getting shot in the chest and arms unless you pumped up with some type of drug.

MSNBC had a guest on about 15-20 minutes ago describing the police actions, including sting-balls and paddy-wagons and arrests - he also mentioned that if there were rounds fired from the protestors, that police rifleman would pick up on those muzzle flashes and fire their rifles in response.
He didn't mention rubber bullets or whether he meant live rounds - just said that the police would fire their rifles if they were under fire.
