Have you done the ALS ice bucket challenge?

I just got challenged by my sister in law. On the one hand it's for a good cause, on the other hand I find fads like this kind of annoying. I'm thinking of just donating in lieu of the challenge but I haven't decided yet.

Ugh at the cynics in this thread. Do you REALLY believe no one has learned more about ALS in the past week? Do you REALLY hate social media trends so much that you have to rationalize millions of dollars going toward a good cause as a bad thing?

Honestly I would probably just donate. The challenge is annoying and trendy right now but the cause is worth it.

A friend texted me that he did it today. I don't know why but I didn't respond and start that conversation chain.

I am a supporter of the cause but I don't get this. I guess some people just need attention. It's like people posting on Facebook "I am so angry today...." hoping for people to ask them why.

I've been challenged, and I'm not doing it.

1) Nobody really gives a fuck who I am so I'm not going to be inspiring people to donate when I upload my YouTube video that gets 36 views total.
2) I wouldn't do it unless I had a solid donation to make anyway, because the whole point of this thing is to raise money. And I can't afford the donation right now, so if I do it, I'm just gonna feel like an opportunistic asshole yelling "lookit me" with a bucket on my head in the name of "awareness" for a disease I'm not helping to combat at all.

It's just a lame "challenge" that results in very few entertaining videos. If it were something ridiculous (like the cinamon challenge, the saltine challenge, the milk gallon challenge) I would be far more in favor of it.

Someone needs to donate money to Harvard Medical School to buy a better camera. Looks like they are using a flip phone camera.

I also appreciate that they took the time to explain ALS.

My manager upload a video to Youtube in 144p. 144p. I think my son's DS does better video than that.

If you have would you like to share your video?

No, and I'm not going to because it's a waste of time for me.

My grandfather died of ALS so I've donated a lot of money to the cause. This challenge is quite stupid at its core...but I'm glad this fad going viral is bringing awareness to it.

The point is to challenge others when you do it. 99.9999% of the people doing this are just regular people.

So you're glad it's bringing awareness, but characterize you spreading that awareness as a "waste of time."

I still don't understand what people are complaining about. If you don't like it, can you summarize in one sentence what EXACTLY you're complaining about?

- A lot of people who were not aware of ALS are now either aware of the disease or have heard of it. Which is not worse than before. This is a positive.

- A lot of people have donated to support ALS research. This is a positive.

A waste of time for me. Because my grandfather died from the disease and I've donated a lot of money to the cause.

Sorry, I'll edit my post to be more clear.

You donate, but if you raise awareness others donate. That's the whole point.

I mean, if you don't want to do it simply because you don't want to do it, that's fine. But don't elaborate on a reason and have it be nonsensical.

What exactly is stupid about it? It has raised awareness and a ton of money for the cause. It's not necessarily about getting money from you or giving you more awareness (unfortunately you have seen it's effects first hand and it's a good thing that you have donated money to the cause). It's also about being involved to try and encourage those you know to get involved as well.

I've been challenged, and I'm not doing it.

I don't think anyone should feel obligated to be involved and i can see how this campaign can make people feel that way which is problem the only downside i see with it.

It's ice cold water, which doesn't feel good. Like I said before, it would be like making a video of punching yourself in the face. Okay, you hit yourself, why? It also comes off as people who don't really care about ALS and wouldn't have donated without this and this is just something they do for attention.

I hope no celebrity that I like does this.

"Hey, look at me, aren't I a clown? Watch me throw ice cold water on myself. Now look at me slip on this banana peel. Hur hur, I'm funny."

Yup, hopefully no celebrity you like donates money and brings attention to it so others donate too. That is really the last thing we, as decent human beings, should ever hope for.

I enjoy the celebrities doing it for lulz, I dislike everyone and their moms doing it on facebook and stuff. Leave it to the well known people. Everyone else just donate. Share the vids of celebs to spread awareness.

Man the negativity in here towards people raising money and having stupid fun. I imagine some of you whining about people walking for breast cancer.

The whole point was getting everyone involved.

GAF turns into the most absurd gang of angry 12 year olds whenever social media is mentioned in any way, shape or form. It's actually kind of pathetic.

"This fad is giving attention to a terrible disease that doesn't get much attention otherwise but it's popular on Twitter and since I have no friends on Twitter I FUCKING HATE IT!"

Seriously, you sound completely ridiculous with this shit. At least you've achieved something positive because now I'm going to donate just to spite you fools.

No, but I've seen people do it with lukewarm water and pretend it's cold. I don't understand what's the point of doing the challenge, why not just donate?

I guess the challenge gives it publicity and makes people want to join in whereas people might be reluctant on just donating.

The real reason is that peer pressure is okay as long as it isn't drugs

Also, if you are against wasting water you are apparently an asshole

I'm generally against conspicuous attention whoring. I'm not against raising awareness/funds. I just get really really irked when I see people doing this slacktivism, then posting about it online as if they're some sort of fucking champion. Same shit with all the stupid fucking Live Strong bracelets from years ago.

Says the guy who posts 8 times a day on an internet forum which is, shock horror, a form of social media.

GAF = relative anonymity, unless you decide to let people know who you are

FB = everyone knows who you are

So yeah, this is a social site. I would hardly consider it "social media".

Thing is, this is exactly how all social media viral marketing works when it comes to generating awareness good causes. People coming off as attention whores. By definition. If people didn't attention whore then it wouldn't be effective.

Also note that there's very little perceivable difference between people who actually care, people who are only doing it for attention, and people who care and are doing it for attention. So being bothered by it is a waste of time, imo.

I know, I know. Like I mentioned earlier, I don't mind that it's doing some good. I just fucking hate the people participating for views online.

Seeing how California is in a terrible drought, I get pretty ticked whenever I see people watering their lawns, let alone dumping gallons of water over their heads.

Do you realize that you're partaking in slacktivism against slacktivism right now? Either shut up or actually do something about it.

How do you define slacktivism? These people are donating money and taking the time to make a video or picture to help raise some awareness whilst encouraging others to do the same. The whole idea of this movement is to encourage people to post about it online and encourage others to do the same. Perhaps some go to far with the attention whoring (i haven't seen this) but it's all for a good cause so it's pretty harmless imo.

It's one bucket of water and in general people are doing it on their lawns so it's not being completely wasted. considering the amount of water people waste on other things this seems pretty insignificant really.

While both may fall under the umbrella term of "social media", the nature of a forum versus a stuff like Facebook or Instagram is very different.

I'd never even seen the acronym 'ALS' used before this thread. Came in expecting to discover what it meant, so far not a single use of the full term...

Seems a bit like charity mugging we have here in England?

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis aka Lou Gehrig's disease who's a famous baseball player back in the day. Only reason I knew of ALS before this challenge was because I follow sports.

From what I know it has to do with your brain.

Wiki'd it and it's just another name for Motor Neuron Disease. That's pretty well known here.

It's pretty well known in the US as "Lou Gehrig's Disease", named after one of the most famous baseball player's ever.

He is famous for giving a speech when he announced his retirement, "Today I consider myself the luckiest man on Earth..."
