I'm mostly caught up on what's happening but one thing i'm not seeing:
6 shots hit brown, right? how many were actually fired? I saw the other day someone down the street had a bullet lodged in the house of their wall or something?
He briefly addressed that during his opening comments.
Here is another main problem with the story that Wilson was getting hit. If he was being pummeled that bad, why is there no mention of bruising on mikes arms or hands.
Lightening the mood isn't always a bad thing.
It's important to him, whether you guys believe it or not.
He can't force congress to make laws man. Separation of powers and all that. You have one party who wants to see him fail at all costs it's surprising and depressing some people still don't understand this.
Its pretty much the best thing he can do at this point. Pity, most people will probably feel that's he's just saying nothing again.Obama saying institution is racist without actually saying the institution is racist.
Clever.
He has no risk for appealing to the public. Shame congress. Get on TV and blast them, both D and R's. It's like he wants to make friends and not piss anyone off.
Thank you for posting this, and I am sorry for all that you personally had to go through because a corrupt and vile system. Anyone who knows what occurs when humans are given power (that is nearly unrestrained in this case) over other humans what can go terribly wrong. Uneducated people are allowed to have this unrestrained power and see this as a free ticket to do essentially whatever the hell they want to essentially whoever the hell they want. And that is what we see here in Ferguson. Power that has been unrestrained for so long, finally spiral out of control in a horrific chain of events.
He should have used a sick day and done this conference tomorrow. He seemed lethargic and had more disdain for people protesting than the tyrannic response towards the community.I got that feeling, but his lack of energy made him sound disinterested. I'm glad he brought up how racist the system can be against people of color.
Yep. People need to open their ears more. If they think he said nothing. There was some important reading-between-the-lines here that needed to be done, guys. What he's saying is this is all arising from centuries of institutionalized racism, that minorities are treated much more harshly in the criminal justice system and that younger people in these impoverished areas can't even get out because they're frequently stuck in a revolving door of criminal justice.
He's saying these aren't problems unique to Ferguson PD, and that this racism is a viewpoint shared across the nation through all stages of life. He's also saying he's been trying to combat this since before he was president.
He also said in his prepared statement that he has to speak the way he's speaking about this because there's still an ongoing federal investigation of this and his statements would be seen as forcing the DoJ's hand one way or another.
I don't think he rambled, and I don't think he said "a whole bunch of nothing". He had some pretty strong ideas, just worded them in a way for the typical Fox News viewer to not understand them so easily.

Ah thank you guys I haven't seen this before. I do hear the one guy saying he came back towards the cop.. so strange... I can fathom why on earth he would ever do that.
Yeah, it's unfortunate he's not making bold statements based on his own investigation that hasn't been completed yet.
Let's get real though. A black president making possibly racially charged comments (even though they wouldn't be wrong) in a press conference to the media? The racist right-wing portion of America's collective head would spin so quickly, you'd think it was The Exorcist all over again.
Interesting tight rope performance by Obama there, blatantly insinuating the criminal justice system isn't fair without outright saying it. If you're expecting him or any president to definitively state that the system is inherently racist you're going to be disappointing, but this is the second time I've seen Obama come close to saying it.
I have full confidence in Eric Holder on this matter so it's hard to complain overall.
Anyone have a link to the Obama speech? I had to step out.

im certainly not buying Wilson was in a positive minset. you dont let of six shots at another unarmed human being without some amount of anger. that six shots, thats a decent amount of bullets intended for one human being. Wilson had to be pissed in some capacity .
Taking all those vacations would tire anyone out.

EDIT: With what he said today I don't think there's any chance that there'll be foul play in the DoJ investigation. I don't think he'd let it happen.
Obama said:So, let me close just saying a few words about the tensions there. We have all seen images of protesters and law enforcement in the streets. Its clear that the vast majority of people are peacefully protesting. Whats also clear is that a small minority of individuals are not.
While I understand the passions and the anger that arise over the death of Michael Brown, giving into that anger by looting or carrying guns, and even attacking the police only serves to raise tensions and stir chaos. It undermines rather than advancing justice.
Let me also be clear that our constitutional rights to speak freely, to assemble, and to report in the press must be vigilantly safeguarded: especially in moments like these. Theres no excuse for excessive force by police or any action that denies people the right to protest peacefully.
Ours is a nation of laws: of citizens who live under them and for the citizens who enforce them. So, to a community in Ferguson that is rightly hurting and looking for answers, let me call once again for us to seek some understanding rather than simply holler at each other. Lets seek to heal rather than to wound each other.
As Americans, weve got to use this moment to seek out our shared humanity thats been laid bare by this moment. The potential of a young man and the sorrows of parents, the frustrations of a community, the ideals that we hold as one united American family.
Ive said this before. In too many communities around the country, a gulf of mistrust exists between local residents and law enforcement. In too many communities, too many young men of color are left behind and seen only as objects of fear. And through initiatives like My Brothers Keeper, Im personally committed to changing both perception and reality. And already, were making some significant progress, as people of good will of all races are ready to chip in. But that requires that we build, and not tear down. And that requires we listen, and not just shout. Thats how were going to move forward together -- by trying to unite each other and understand each other, and not simply divide ourselves from one another. Were going to have to hold tight to those values in the days ahead. And thats how we bring about justice, and thats how we bring about peace.
Journalists kept being harassed and getting 'evacuated for their own safety'. So no one really knows for sure.

He could easily just have meant that Mike turned around to face the cop. If you listen to the other guy talking, it sounds like he's trying to answer "why is his body facing the cop if he was running away?" or some such question.
people trying to force their way into government building downtown:
I don't know that that has been confirmed at all, though. Were any officers actually shot? I know there are reports of civilians shot but I am not sure that has been confirmed either. Some journalists are saying the saw fireworks, some are saying they heard live rounds. How is that downplaying anything?

This is something I was wondering about today as well. A lot of noise has been made about Mike Brown's assumed state of mind, and how it makes him going into beast mode and charging a cop who was shooting at him probable; what about Wilson? How were things going at work? At home?
I don't generally support an invasion of privacy of the kind represented by such inquiries, but we're talking about someone who killed another person here.
I have zero interest in Obama once again say nothing. It would be a great platform to talk about the institutionalized racism in the justice system or the militarization of the police. Instead he will say nothing of substance.

Obama trying so hard not to say: "the criminal justice system is racist" in his speech...
And it's easier to fear them more when you have.
Applaud what? Intentionally agitating an already on edge police force?
I think from what we can see he walked up to get a response and get pictures taken. Do I know that? No. Do I think it's a good possibility? Yep.
I'm not defending dispersing people from their own yards, no. I'm point out what should be obvious, actions have consequences.
If someone is attacking from inside a group the group becomes complicit if they remain with that person.
