There's so many people in this thread alone that are seemingly so happy about other people being disappointed (not only about Ridley, but generally), that those guys not getting their desired schadenfreude would be a significantly bigger portion than the people who would be upset over their desired character not making it in.
I would also argue that wanting other people to be disappointed/"have a meltdown" is significantly more bratty than hoping for a character be on the roster.

But if Ridley gets confirmed, people get to play as a cool space dragon. I'm sure there are some people that would hate that, but I'd imagine there are very few. It's really a win win as far as Ridley's concerned.

I know there is a dedicated group of people that want Ridley, but I don't think it's actually that big. (That's not to say it's an insignificant number either.)
I think a lot of people are just riding the troll train. I don't think the majority of people would choose him over everyone else... It's just the long standing joke of the English Smash fandom.

Please forgive the off-topic, but I've seen the movie twice and maybe I just missed it, but is this actually in the movie? In the trailer it's like this, but I thought the movie doesn't censor it, and doesn't have the "obscene gesture" text at all, which makes it less funny in my opinion.

You are correct on both accounts. The trailer also has Drax in this mockup, although he isn't actually in it in the film, along with the "They call themselves Guardians of the Galaxy" and the response of "What a bunch of a-holes".

It's an item that spawns on the stage. You pick it up, use it, and a randomly selected character appears doing whatever they're supposed to do. It's a lot like the Pokeballs, just that you can't throw it.

- Might be a redesigned veteran, like the often discussed Toon Link that uses separate items from Link (a la Wind Waker Deku Leaf)
- Could be an obvious newcomer, like the Little Mac and Takamaru speculations (that Sakurai would use to promote West and East, respectively)
- or it could even be in terms of a newcomer/3rd party that has little basis in reality, such as my own personal pipe stream Sora from Kingdom Hearts (others often site Ridley in these terms. Although Im not convinced of his exclusion just yet)
The joy is in the 'possibility', because if a character is part of a video game or does something special in one it could end up in the upcoming Smash. Nothing is written in stone....until a game goes gold.
People who want to ruin that fun for the speculators are completely missing the point; and frankly ruin any and all hype discussion.
