Smash Bros. gives Zero Suit Samus skimpy new outfit; Sakurai thanks "female designer"

The fact he puts emphasis on the 'female' designer, is similar to "it's ok I can say the n-word, I have tons of black friends"

Lol

They're nice nods, though they kinda emphasize how ZSS is a terrible character choice for Smash. These costumes are loungewear, which Samus has been shown to wear only when she's not, well, fighting. Same with the Zero Suit in general, which she only willingly wears into battle when her suit malfunctions.

ZSS in Smash Bros. has always been blatant fanservice - and not in the fun, reference-y way. Whether one is okay with that is up to the individual, I s'ppose.
I like the inclusion of ZSS. Reason being, it's one-half of the Samus character. Part of what makes the overall concept of Samus so unique is she's both beauty and the beast. ZSS reps the former, while suited Samus reps the latter. It's always kind of neat to see casual gamers' surprise when you say, "Yeah, ZSS is the same character as Samus. That's what Samus looks like under the suit."

Let's call it what it is: fanservice.

But if Nintendo wants to do that, they should show some male character beefcake to make things equitable.

Either way, those boots are horrific.

did this really need its own topic

It's better if a big huge sex
ism
bomb goes off in it's own thread rather than collaterally damaging the SSB4 OT.

I think the design is pretty good but those high heel boots are really getting up my jimmies.

Giga Mac.

Or if you're desprate to see him in a state of undress; Wireframe Mac.

Yeah, the question isn't whether it's gratuitous. I think it's fine. I'm just interested in what it says about gaming culture today that Sakurai felt the need to say, "A woman made this, so don't read into it the wrong way!" I'm interested to know if the Japanese phrasing was similar, since this particular concern might not be as topical in the East as it is in the West.

Team Silent back in SH3 mentioned that Heather's look came from their female staff. The original design for her had her in pants, and she was generally completely covered. Their female staff didn't think a teenager would dress like that, so they asked if they could redesign her. And they came back with a look that had in a mini skirt.

Also, why are people still complaining about the heels? Didn't she have those in Other M? Wouldn't then have been the time to complain?
People did. A lot. You must have missed it. If anything, Smash Bros. made the godawful heels slightly better by trying to give them a purpose in making them have jets or whatever, while in Other M she just randomly had heels.

It's an interesting point and it's not the first time I've heard of character designs which would be considered as revealing to western opinions, but they were actually accepted or encouraged by Japanese female devs.

I remembered reading about Heather Mason's final design from Silent Hill 3 was result of feedback from the Female staff in the game. The original design was something a bit more conservative compared to the miniskirt which was in the final design.

Also I don't know if this is just a lighting/texture issue but the way ZSS's model bends in the torso area looks a lot more obviously weird when it's on a skin texture rather than the shiny latex or whatever on the Zero Suit.

It looks good. Samus looks good.

Of course I wish he didn't have to specifically refer to the designer's gender ("female" designer; what is he, an extraterrestrial?) but it's a minor hangup.

Im happy he included it even if a handful of people will grab pitchforks over a girl in running...clothes? (I know what it is but it looks like that)

Yeah, that's how it sounds to me.

There are going to be people who find this sexist / icky, people who feel differently to some of the people in this thread.
That's okay, they're allowed to have different opinions and feelings about what they want to see in Smash and what is cool / not cool.

Awesome update tonight. Love the callbacks to the GBA Metroids with this costume, wish more characters had alts like this.

Not really a new outfit, but anyway.

As I said in the other topic, I'm totally down with some cheesecake, but there better be some beefcake alts too. I'm not cool with only female characters being sexualized, when you've got a bevy of appropriate male characters that could also get the same treatment.

For those curious, either jokingly or seriously, here's a link to the Japanese Miiverse post:

And the line in question that parallels "But thanks to the determination of her female designer, these Zero Suit outfits got completed in time":

が、担当デザイナー(♀)の根性によって、完成しました。

Ignoring the "female designer" weirdness for a moment, it's interesting how this appears to have been a last-minute addition to the game.

I guess I underestimate how much time game development takes, but I'm always surprised something like this would be considered challenging to design when it seems there are unpaid amateurs on the Internet who crank out this sort of stuff overnight.

Seeing as you had 2nd post where you caps locked and probably didnt read the OP (as it clearly stated it wasnt skimpy and such)
....okay what im trying to say is

Can *you* not refer to us as 4chan? We arent 4chan. At least contribute to the discussion.

Edit: also guys if thats a last minute addition im fearing no snake more and more by the minute >.<
