Eh honestly the female comment is probably given just to placate those tumblr folks. Those people will probably bat an eye when they see women jogging in those suits lol

I don't really see an issue.

It's actual sports clothing as opposed to like a swimsuit or lingerie.
To be clear, no one ever said there's an issue of the sort you're suggesting. I just find it interesting how Sakurai felt the need to "justify" it by pointing out that a female designed it. I think this is a reflection of the dialogue these days regarding depictions of women, to the point where even the intent behind actual sports clothing, as you noted, has to be "justified."

For those curious, either jokingly or seriously, here's a link to the Japanese Miiverse post:

And the line in question that parallels "But thanks to the determination of her female designer, these Zero Suit outfits got completed in time":

が、担当デザイナー(♀)の根性によって、完成しました。

Seems like the english quote should have been "thanks to the determination of her (female) designer", heh.

Seeing as you had 2nd post where you caps locked and probably didnt read the OP (as it clearly stated it wasnt skimpy and such)
....okay what im trying to say is

Can *you* not refer to us as 4chan? We arent 4chan. At least contribute to the discussion.

Edit: also guys if thats a last minute addition im fearing no snake more and more by the minute >.<
No, they have a thread up right now laughing at that dlc guy.

Hmm, so the designer's gender is pointed out in both versions of the text? Interesting.

You know what would make this fair?

Shirtless Mario. Do it.

I bet it turns out he's actually ripped underneath those overalls.

"Skimpy" might not have been the best word choice.

You should have gone with "SEXY" or "STYLISH"

:]

I like the heels. They have shock absorbers to explain her jumping and landing ability, and the thrusters add extra "oomph" to her kicks. Yeah, she's always kind of in a "stripper stance," but all in all I think it works. :-)

It looks good. Samus looks good.

Of course I wish he didn't have to specifically refer to the designer's gender ("female" designer; what is he, an extraterrestrial?) but it's a minor hangup.

Blame the world we live in. God forbid a woman have a nice figure and actually show it off. You have to say a woman designed it or else the internet will jump, screaming and shitting, down your throat like it always does.

Bleh.

Only some real beefcake will balance the scale, and Sakurai better deliver. I was totally cool with Smash being relatively free from this type of thing, but he's opened the floodgates now.

This technically has in-game precedent (Metroid Fusion, Zero Mission, etc).

Are you suggesting Mario is not a beefcake?

Speedo Captain Falcon, then.

I'm not one of the people outraged, but I like how the argument is "it's okay, because it's a reference to the last time they made pandering fan service."

ZSS has always been my favorite character and I've never, ever used a female character because "she looks hot". It's something I can't understand. I love ZSS because it's Samus in her fragile version wich also happens to be incredibly fast and agile (something that lacked in Brawl) with a badass gun/whip. Calling ZSS useless or fanservice is wrong. This outfit sure looks awesome, and sure looks hot, but I like it because it reminds me of some of the best artworks (wich were surprisingly casual) from one of the best games on GBA.

Edit: I was quoting someone but phone browser sucks.

Awesome! She looks like she's ready to kick some ass in awesome sportswear. I think this is a great nod back to the GBA titles. I always loved that red one.

Oh, I'm fully aware it is and always was pandering fan service, but it's classic Metroid at this point. You'd have to invent it for Smash if you were to do it with the other characters, in which case it becomes a bit more... obvious.

Yeah, seriously look at those images from those other games. :P I mean we can all pretend that this isn't a blatantly obvious sexualization of a character... but come on.

I posted in the other thread that Captain Falcon, Link & Snake all have precedence too. As for the others, just take their damn shirts off, or make a "battle damaged" version.

That's more like it.
I know Link was shirtless in TP and Snake was shirtless in Snake Eater, but when did Captain Falcon show some skin?

That's more like it.

You'll get this and like it.
