Even without dub additions, it's hard to see why other couples were chosen over them.
Yolei and Ken barely had any scenes together. (I think she slapped him once, but she slaps everyone.)
I can buy Matt and Sora at least, since they were established as close friends.
I'm actually watching the German dub which is narrated by an anonymous narrator. It's the same in the JP version, I think, which wouldn't be too surprising given that the German translation is usually pretty close to the source material in most cases. Way better than what you guys got, sorry.
The german dub is awesome! I like it even more than the japanese original, the german adaptations of the japanese songs kick ass, I used to own all the german soundtracks but sold them a few ears ago during my "I don't care for Digimon anymore" phase.
I'm still hoping for a german language DVD release.

Yes, Renamon was male in the german version, he only became female as Sakuyamon which works as it can be seen an effect of merging with Rika.
I always assumed it started as a mistake but instead of going "Fix it, fix it, fix it" by suddenly switching voice actors they owned it and made the character male.
I always thought it was funny that in the german dub of Digimon 02 they picked a male voice actor with a pretty deep voice for Wormmon and just had him do the part in a squeaky voice until he became Stingmon. It worked but I felt bad for the guy's vocal chords.
I am always anxious of new characters in the Adventure universe, and I would like Taichi to be the main character this time around. A new child partner with Hackmon will no doubt hog all the action. Especially, that Hackmon Ultimate form is RK.

I was just watching A Very Digi Christmas and at 11:41, the cast from 02 is playing Go Fish when Davis recommends they play Strip Poker. How old are these kids again?

Tamers started losing me once it went all "grimdark" towards the last third of the series. And from what I've heard, Japanese kids got scared enough such that they eventually stopped watching. Obviously, this was a bad thing for a kids' show.
You guys seem very knowledgeable so here's a question: In 02 what was up with that "destroying digimon is unethical" crap? Is that chalked up to just bad writing or something? That shit felt so contrived, and even as a kid that irked me. The original kids never had any problem destroying enemy digimon that weren't the main villains. And besides it's not like they die anyway, they just get reconfigured.
Though to be fair, maybe it's a series that's better once you're a little older, but I just could not get into Tamers when I was a kid. The concept of using cards to evolve your digimon instead of the friendship/protection aspect was absurd to me. Then there's digimon being more like pets and some matrix-like digimon conspiracy network, it all just turned me off.

Agreed with this in that it's pretty annoying. I'd chalk it up to the new children's first exposure to Digimon World conflict being a disregard for Digimon life by the hand of a human (Digimon Kaiser).
I'm personally really really not a fan of the mountain its made out of in some episodes. Again, with the way the season approaches the recognition of Digimon as living beings, it's not like it completely comes out of nowhere. Yet in any context outside of the Digimon Kaiser throwing lives away for his goal's flags, it's lame when the kids feel compelled to say "Don't kill them! Just knock them out!" Again, in fairness, Digi-destined abuse was another major theme for the show to use revolving around Digimon life of friend and foe (and brought about Ken's arc which is very well done), so it's not flat out "bad writing." It is a niggling formality for me to see episodes after the Kaiser arc finishes though.
While on the topic of Ken, I disliked how
Archnemon (or whoever they're working for) took so much credit for Ken's transformation. I didn't mind the "push -> shove" bait they utilized to manipulate him, but with it leading directly to him making Dark Towers which the antagonists desired and making him a complete pawn for their desires (with complementary dark chip thing that entered him which I'm guessing leads to his "evil change")...
The
antagonist being a pawn all along
is not an unfounded idea, but slowly lightens the weight and responsibility of taking on the mantle as the Digimon Kaiser. It's less,
"Here's a Digi-destined who came from a somber place and due to it sees the Digi-World and his purpose differently."
to
"Here's a kid that was taken advantage of by dark forces due to personal harsh events. If it wasn't him, it would have been another child."
Sure, you can have both, but the former makes for a much stronger story here and it's getting watered down from heavier focus on the latter. Ken still has a great arc for Digimon (and did take personal responsibility for submitting to his demons), but it's one of the occurrences where the devil is in the details for a reason and maybe should have been left out.
In other news, lol Angewomon vs. Ladydeviwomon catfight rematch.
So, Digimon was pretty huge up to Tamers in Brazil, and as such they did some... peculiar things.
I always thought that no one recorded this.... thing, but it actually appeared on Youtube a few months ago. Now my friends that blocked it from their memories won't say I'm crazy. It's worse than Angelica singing the first opening, for Qinglongmon's sake...
And yes, that's actually something that aired on the biggest channel of the country to promote the series.

Guess looking at it that way it makes sense. It might not have been that much of a problem if it wasn't blown up into such a big deal, or maybe if Ken was the one being apprehensive about destroying digimon considering the things he'd committed. (Memory is fuzzy, but I don't recall Ken being one of the kids against destroying digimon, mostly Yolei and Cody?) Also, you'd think Kari or TK would've provided some insight since they had experience in the matter. But this is all just nitpicking though in comparison to some of 02's more blatant issues. Looking at you,

I flip-flop between Tamers and Adventure as my favorite season.
Adventure has the child-like wonder on everything that's easy to love.
However, the way Tamers is put together is definitely much better written.
The guy who wrote Tamers (Chiaki J. Konaka) has a website with stuff about the season. It's a really interesting read if you are into Tamers. http://www.konaka.com/alice6/tamers/

I feel everything after the half-way point in the season was changed from a focus on the Dark Ocean to the Destiny Stones/Oikawa thing.
Up to that point, Ken was a well-rounded character and didn't need more backstory, but then they throw that stuff in. Definitely feels tacked-on and unneeded.
How about Daisuke and Miyako getting some backstory? Lord knows they needed something.

Indeed. You've already talked on the Dark Ocean turning from a promising plotline to a randomly swapped and swept element of the story, so I won't even go into that. lol
Agreed that those two getting more layers would have been a better option. Daisuke rounded out to a Tai copy without the notable backstory that doubles as the occasional laughing stock for being dumb/brash (though at least he has V-Mon which turns into some cool evolutions) and Miyako, the sensitive genki girl that brings the snacks.
Also, don't forget to attack the golden shit on the Digimon page, everyone!
The only bad thing about that website, is that it's from the early 2000's... *shudder*

I hate harping on the problems of 02, as I know people like it, but it is seriously a step down character-wise from Adventure.
Heck, Daisuke and Miyako's family are barely in it. Compare that to season one where everyone's parents are a big deal and affect their character development.
There was a lot more to the original Chosen Children then 02's (with exception of Ken).
Ugh, I'll stop now before I write a novel about it... *Attacks Goldpoopmon*
Yeah, it may read like I'm straight up hatin' on it and that's not the case. I'm not saying 02 is all doom & gloom. It has some really good things going for it like Ken (who is the best antagonist thus far) and Veemon evolutions!
It's just harder to keep quiet about the missed opportunities because the first half focusing on Digimon Kaiser was good and then it teeters downwards from there. The original Adventure didn't have anything like Kaiser, but I find it stays more consistent throughout. Not to mention that it didn't neglect touching on most its main cast in meaningful ways.
Before I watched 02 I asked you guys if it was worth watching and I don't regret viewing it for the pros brought up.
I agree with Paper Sparrow on Tamers and Adventure being favorite season. Tamers is the only season where I like all main characters and their Digimon.
Adventure 02 is worth watching. Concepts like DNA-digivolving and human villains are awesome. There is a more morally grey aspect to this season which I enjoyed.
Really, the reason I rage about it so much is that it had the chance to be amazing. I had fond memories of it and was pretty excited coming off the heels of Adventure to rewatch it.
So with that in mind, I present to you the list of bad things in 02:
- Dark Ocean... (Thought I'd get this out of the way.)
- Daisuke is a hot head like Tai, but unlike Tai, never changes. He is always right and when he's not, there is no consequences.
Notice he never has a problem with digivolving, unlike other lead characters in other seasons.
- Miyako is a Mary Sue to Daisuke's Gary Stu. Never learns anything.
- Iori, despite having character development, is the most boring character.
- Miyako should have received the Knowledge Digimental and Iori, Love. Makes a lot more sense for both characters.
- Hikari and Takeru are background. Their involvement lessens as time goes on.
(As Daisuke's interest in Hikari lessens.)
- Ken has way too much time dedicated to his character.
- Blackwargreymon, as cool as he is, is inconsequential to the plot.
- The destiny stone arc is a repeat every episode and means nothing.
- The world tour also *gasp* goes nowhere.
- A ton of other people having Digimon ruins the magic of it.
- Hey, Demon's pretty cool- oh.
- The kids barely have a relationship with each other.
I mean this as in there is no real development between characters. (With exception of Ken and Daisuke.)
When the whole point of DNA digivolving is the relationship between two people, you think this would be pretty important.
- The kids barely have a relationship with their families. (Except Ken and maybe Iori.)
- I'm a little over hating Shakkoumon, but still... Iori and Takeru got shafted.
(Speaking of Takeru, he became a Law-aligned psychopath. Wonder how he plays Shin Megami Tensei games...)
- The girls' "visions" at the end are extremely superficial. It completely takes any good will towards Miyako away.
- Let's not mention the epilogue... I think enough has been said.
-
Bringing back Vamdemon weakened the ending and impact of previously morally grey villains.
Sorry everyone, had to get it off my chest. >.>
Edit: The list above, is very much approved by me. (With a few changes. )
Tamers having meaningful relationships with the Digimon is a strong point of the season.
So what's everyone's favorite Digimon film(s)? Up to now I have only seen Our War Game praised from people online. Now that I've just finished 02, I'm going to watch it and the third before Tamers.
I loved the first short film with little Hikari/Tai and it made for a great prequel to the events of the original Adventure. Any films to look out for past the third? Any I should skip for my own good? I wasn't originally planning to check out so much, but if it comes to that I wouldn't mind being informed.

The first movie btw, is not a prequel. Its debut in Japan was a day before the first episode of Adventure aired.
Story wise, 02 movies suck, but they are worth it alone for the animation and art. Really gorgeous movies, especially the one that featured Wallace. All Digimon movies are worth a watch imo.

I was mostly looking forward to strong production values and direction in the films, so that sounds promising perhaps. Guess I'll concern myself with the later films when I get there.
