Owners of both consoles: Does Xbone OS makes you prefer it over PS4?

I prefer "Xbox record that" over the share button most of the time. I prefer the xb1 os overall for the level of integration (twitch feeds playing in the store for games, more content on the screen at once, voice commands, less ads than the ps4, etc.) I think the ps4 os seems quicker but it doesn't have the same utility and there's a lot of loading time still for any online content.

*Is there a way to turn off the ambient background noise on the ps4 menu? Its really annoying to me and I would rather not just mute the TV.

What's slow about the x1 interface? The preview program has lots of slowdown bugs, but they're always fixed.

There are a lot of slow annoyances in the Xbone OS, for instance booting from a cold boot takes forever, and even suspend booting isn't great. Installing games is painfully slow. And launching anything in the OS has a small delay, reminds me of operating old android phones.

Both have their pros and cons.

For instance, PS4 plays much better with headsets (automatically shifting audio to the correct source), whereas Xbox just does parties and invites better.

The main thing I hate about Xbox One (and Vita, too) is that there's an APP for friends. How do you mess that up? Considering that 360 didn't ever need a friends app..

I cannot disagree more with this statement... Everytime I have to do anything on my 360 it feels like such a chore... There is shortcuts for everything in the xb1 OS

Have to agree, it really is difficult going back to the 360 after using the XBO, it feels slow and awkward in comparison now, a chore is exactly what it is. The XBO may be missing features offered by the 360 but there's no way I'd want to have the 360 OS/UI instead.

As for the comparison between current gen systems, I much prefer the XBO but the sad thing is neither are particularly great right now, but at least MS have been putting out regular updates improving it. Does it change my mind over which console to buy on? No. I like plenty of things the XBO offers but there are a lot of other things that take priority when weighing up where to buy (value, how big the difference between versions is, controller, friends etc.)

I definitely am! Would rather buy every multiplatform game on Xone, if it wasnt the weaker hardware. But yeah, for me the Xbox One OS is much better and receiving a much better support! And I'm loving more after every single new fw update!

However I really think that Xbox One still needs more stability. And it seems a joke post since PS4 gets too much of this, but I'm serious... its the only problem of the Xbox OS imho.

I prefer the Ps4 OS more for one thing really Speed. I think the Xbox one UI is slow and clunky. I feel it takes more button presses on the xbox with more loading screens then the PS4 to do the same things.

For example when you install a game digitally on xbox one you have to got my games and apps, then scroll all the way left to see the game. On ps4 new games are place at the very beginning of the line.

I prefer xbox UI over ps4. I like the layout and all the features. I can't go back after using snap. My only let down is the crushed black which I hope is addressed this year, and screenshot feature.

I prefer the utility of the Xbone OS, but love how zippy the PS4 UI is.

But even if the PS4 UI were a white screen that said "Press X to Launch Game," I'd still prefer it to the Xbone, simply because 90% of the games I play are multiplatform, and those are damn near guaranteed to look and/or run better on PS4.

Yeah I don't think that's actually the case. Suspend and resume makes it impossible for the PS4 to be faster than the Xbone to get you back where you left off in a game.

Like how Kinect solves your problems with the Xbone UI, the PS4 camera would solve your problem with finding games and apps without going through any tiles.

How do you know when your xbone is in suspend resume mode ?

I feel like when I turn my xbone and ps4 in standyby they boot up about the same time.

No, the Xbox One's OS is awful. It's a disjointed mess of an experience. The OS has nice features, but navigating it, especially without Kinect, is a chore. Kinect is hit or miss at best. Sony's OS lacks features but is infinitely easier and faster to navigate.

Luckily Microsoft keeps improving every aspect of the OS. Getting ready to put the new media player to use!

Resume seems fast to me. 15-16 seconds from controller press to dash.

I don't mind the Xbox OS till I get excited for an achievement and try and check it out to have me bounced out and wait 20seconds for the app to load OR it'll try and side load and take priority taking me out of my game.

360 dashboard was so well done.. how did they get so backward...

I think they're both terrible. The #1 issue with both of them, and it permeates them from home screen to their online stores, is that nothing is sorted, nothing is sortable, and (almost) nothing can be customized.

I think it's more of a joke that you still don't even get notifications when your friends are online. Talk about one of the most basic things you can include...

wait a sec, are you talking about xboxone? cause I still get notifications when my friends are online, my lady is always asking me who is shottymcbadass? haha
seriously though.

Only have a PS4 right now but looking at getting an XB1 in the fall.

The split of opinion in this thread is crazy....people on both sides thinking one is miles ahead of the other.

Curious to see for myself which I prefer, the most important thing to me is snappiness/responsiveness. Nothing irritated me more on PS3 than having to wait constantly for things to load

I feel like Sony's could be much better, but it seems like they don't really care unless pushed by competition. Weird how 3D playback was ready a week after MS announced they were going to have it. It's like they are just sitting on features for some special occasion. I wish Xbox One was selling more because maybe then Sony wouldn't be so complacent.

No, not really. The big shocker for me was how much better the XB1 controller is compared to the DS4.

I will so note, I starting the MAdden 15 trial at 1pm CST and it is now 6pm and it only 53% done. I downloaded The last of us remastered in an hour and half on PS4 at midnight launch day. Last of US 48 gigs Madden 14 gigs. That pretty normal across the board.

Yeah like what? Hosting a show with dumb stickers or a really poor photoshop for your game videos that don't even record correctly the majority of the time?

Maybe you mean a physical feature of the box itself like the ability to bounce up and down when you press it down on one corner?

Stop defending Sony with the old line of "50% of the stuff the PS4 already had". MS has gone far past that and added a load of stuff the PS4 doesn't even have in the pipeline to be implemented. Sony has done a piss poor job supporting its console with firmware updates. I don't get how anyone can defend that.

The only thing that the PS4 will really have over the Xbox One after the 2.0 update (who the hell knows when this will be) is the share play thing. From past experience, I bet that thing is broken as hell at implementation too. Probably won't be until 3.0 when it actually works as advertised.

I just love how its a feature war now cause you know...the important war is over. bring me more games!!!!!

When I owned both no. Xbone OS feels bloated and is hella slow. Not to mention it only really seems cool and fun with Kinect imo, which I completely dislike. Suspend/resume is highly overrated and only really works about 90% of the time and even that depends on the game. The UI also looks cluttered to me vs PS4 which while still dated in terms of feature set, actually looks clean.

Doubtful. Sony just lets you play the game earlier even though it's not completely downloaded.

Really? Pretty weird reason to prefer playing games because of the OS. The OS you won't see when playing the game... Unless you mean for the moments you go back to the OS at times.

Personally I vastly prefer the PS4 OS atm. It seems faster for sure. X1 is winning for features and customisation though, but they need tweaking and speed needs improving for sure, but I do see the potential of the X1 OS.

The only thing I cares about is gaming and ease of multiplayer. So, as long as the OS doesn't make me jump over hoops to do them, I don't care. Thus, prefer the PS4 because it's more power => "better" ports.

Curious, how is it unstable?

I never noticed instability, just slowness or lag. Never experienced a crash. That may be a combination of the OS and being the "weaker hardware".

Also, stability patches of the PS4 may be needed after all, so Sony might not just be whistling into the wind. It crashed on me once while playing Ghosts (which according to Google, it's not that uncommon.) I think it's more of the apps running in the background while gaming, I close every app now.

wait a sec, are you talking about xboxone? cause I still get notifications when my friends are online, my lady is always asking me who is shottymcbadass? haha
seriously though.

Nope, PS4. PSN still doesn't have notifications for online friends. Luckily the UI is fast as fuck so I'm literally a double tap of the PS button away from instantly seeing who is online but still, I shouldn't have to touch anything.

They are adding friends tab in the main dashboard. Currently It's in a beta for small numbers of users

I find the X1 OS far superior. For me it's better organized, cleaner, has more features, and recording previous gameplay actually works. I especially like how the store is put together on the X1. Select a game and you can immediately preview a Twitch stream, watch user clips, and view user screenshots directly from the game's store page.

The HDMI passthrough makes it much easier to start a game up if we are already watching TV (or to flick back to TV mid-game). That is pretty much the only part that makes me choose to play some games on Xbox one instead of PS4

Own both, prefer the PS4 UI but I feel like both are lacking.

The XB1 UI feels too clunky, especially when Kinect fails to recognize a command. The PS4 UI to me lacks details, even simple things like color themes should have been default.

I have a feeling the XB1 UI will run away with the lead as time passes. MS seems more dedicated to the "user experience"/UI aspect judging from all these previews/betas and surveys. Haven't heard a thing from Sony, besides that "folders" rumor.

I definitely prefer the software from the software company. Also, I prefer the hardware from the hardware company.

Right now the only reason I have to prefer my XBone over my PS4 is if I'm sitting down to watch a blu-ray, because I have the media remote. I don't like having to use the Dualshock4 to rewind etc. It just feels wrong. WRONG.

I agree the XBone UI is clearly superior, which is really down to the fact that the PS4 UI is just a fucking hot mess that needs to be cleaned up and I can hardly believe Sony has let it continue to be this bad for so long after launch. But I don't really give a shit about that. I bought these machines to play games on, and PS4 is the superior gaming machine. I expect things will even out as time goes on, but up to this point my new gen gaming breakdown is probably something like 95% PS4 and 5% XBone. And a lot of my XBone trigger time has been re-playing games I already played on PS4, so I can compare them first hand.

I agree, and you may be right with MS running away with it in the end. I hope Sony shifts its emphasis into the OS, the potential for making an epic console is there. The hardware battle is already over, but the OS battle is still raging.

What I hate about the Xbox One OS is that the console is still semi online required. I shipped a Xbox One to my brother that is currently in the army without internet. I installed the mandatory update, but forgot to add a profile, and now he can`t use he`s console because you have to connect online in order to get a profile. On Xbox 360 you could create a profile offline, and that`s also possible on the PS4.

To me they are the same.

I don't leave my stuff on Standby/Instant-On so that whole thing is a moot point to me.

Xboner may have the edge because of media support that is coming.

Also how the hell do you record a clip on the Kinect-less Xboner.

I keep screaming "XBOX RECORD THAT" and it doesn't work!?

There are plenty of reasons why an OS can make you prefer playing games on one machine over another.

I can be watching TV and still receive a game invite from friends, and start playing due to that.
I can actually see when friends come online, because it bothers to tell me.
Twitch broadcasts don't embed the damn UI into the stream.
Can opt for Skype calls instead of party chat, so I can talk to my brothers even when they're not on their consoles (one doesn't even own an Xbox One yet).
Can snap various apps to the side, so if I'm waiting for a show to start, I can still be playing meanwhile.
Recording shit actually works reliably.

I bought my PS4 with the assumption that I'd be purchasing console multiplats (that don't have a PC version) for it due to the superior specs. These days though, I'm hesitant to do so, as the Xbox has integrated itself so well in my setup, that playing anything on the PS4 feel extremely segregated from everything else I do. Now unless the port is a disaster (and 900p vs 1080p is not a disaster to me) on Xbox One, I'm probably going to end up buying that version instead.

I like both about the same, though the suspend/resume feature on my Xbone is a huge + over my PS4. Don't know what the fuck's taking so long for Sony to implement that.
My theory would be they rushed the console to launch at the same time as the XB1 while also deciding to add the resume/suspend feature late into development.

I have two friends who traded in their PS4 for XB1 because of the OS, Skype, parties, Headphones and controller. They bought the PS4 at launch with me. I lost my online buddies for FIFA and NHL lol.
