Legend of Korra Book 3: Change |OT| SCHEDULEBENDING

I actually love Bolin as a character. I thought he was misused in most of Book 2 but had some great moments. And I liked him at the start of Book 3. But I found as they went along, he was more and more being played off as a man child and his humor was more obnoxious than timely or funny. I don't think I have a bias or want to hate him. Because as I said, I actually liked him the most out of Book 1 (besides Asami and Tenzin). I just feel like they have really dumbed him down after Book 1.

I'm with you here. It's really disappointing because you can see that there's an actual personality in there. Like, if they just changed his portrayal a *little* bit, he'd feel like a real character.

And I dunno, I just hated all his moments in this finale. Hated his plan, the bird call, the sock in the mouth part. All of it. Just rubbed me the wrong way.

EDIT: I did like Bolin's fight sequences though! I guess I just didn't care for him as comic relief. So I shouldn't say I flat out hated his character in the finale. For me, he was the only really negative thing I had to take away from the finale (which I really loved). But I guess maybe his moments bothered me more than most of you. Maybe when I re-watch it, it won't bug me as much.

He didn't do anything I wouldn't expect a comic relief character to do in this episode.

The bird call bit was painful and the only part it clashed for me.

But he didn't do much cringe-worthy shit during his attempt to rescue them from the lava, or when they said he learned to lava bend. Saying what he did is pretty standard funny guy commentary with the "near death experience" bit.

When he pushed Suyin aside to hug Opal again it wasn't anything another funny character would do, he just finally found a girlfriend who likes him so it didn't bother me that he'd try to insert some humor in a happy emotional reunion scene. It's like something somebody in Disney would do. Same when he made the puppy face when Korra was saying her goodbyes at the beginning. He's the goof of the troop.

The put a sock in it scene I forgive because tbh, that's me irl. I need to tell people "it's funny because x" to deliberately ruin a joke and make people cringe. That's what he did by explaining the put a sock in it, so Opal's reaction was fitting. Not to mention it was the "we beat the bad guys" scene most shows have where somebody says a catchphrase and they all laugh, they didn't know the severity of Korra's state.

In summary his humor has bothered me the whole season but outside of the bird scene, he was used properly this time around as comical foil.

He already had some character development this season when he talked with Opal and now he has lava bending, I'm hoping the writers will make him get into lava bending as a character development plot device next season.

I think everyone can agree the bird calls part was stupid. I also didn't like how Bolin sort of ruined the tone with that sock scene.

Overall I still liked him in the finale though.

Ya, that scene just made Zaheer look like some Saturday morning cartoon villain, but I felt he was better than he was in previous episodes.

Just finished watching episode 12 and I'm not a huge fan of
Zaheer being able to actually fly.
It barely makes any sense. Other than that it's pretty great, not as good as episode 11, but still great.

On to ep 13.

That was excellent. I really like how it ended. Happy, but slightly sad.

Wonder where they will go from here. I'd assume Book 4 (if happens?!?) will start off with her
getting back into being the avatar if it doesn't do some sort of timejump forward

Why is everyone calling Bolin a man child? Isn't he still under 18? Its not like he is in his 20s.

It's not entirely inappropriate, but I think people forget these characters are teenagers. Aang and Sokka had their silly moments. I think the difference is most of the times they weren't looking for a reaction, they just had proper writers writing the dialogue as ATLA was a much funnier show.

Bolin looks for a reaction, he's the annoying funny dude in a group that sometimes ends up being funny. But the fact the only person who called him out on his bullshit is Opal is a good thing, I'm sure she'll do the same if he continues with bad humor.

This was unexpected

Have you not seen me in the Destiny thread? I act completely different here than over there and the anime thread. Not to mention those don't compare to how I act irl.

"and I would've got away with it, if it weren't for you meddling kids!"

...I didn't even have to change anything. wow.

No I just could have sworn you were actually a dog.

Jokes aside yes I actually have noticed how different you are here lol. I guess you have more of a reason to be negative here.

All that was missing is for Naga to appear and start talking like Scooby Doo

"Reee hee hee hee hee Rood One Rorrin, put a rrock in it!"

"I didn't say rock Naga! I said sock!"

*crickets*

You know what, though? His plan is basically what they did, except with Korra going in as herself giving up instead of Bolin going in as a ... shepherd or somethign?

Ooooof that finale.

Final shot of Korra feels bad man. There she is, all banged up and everyone around her has grown. As the Avatar, her duty was to master all of the elements and protect the World of threats. She did, twice, but in the end those two victories seem so far away. As a person, she's back on square one. And where she needs time to recover, everyone else will be moving forward even faster.

Asami? Their friendship strenghtend, but at the same time she's bringing her company back in the public eye and making it successful. Bei-Fong? She really hated Su, but in the end both of them saw eye to eye and became close again. Tenzin? He took his sweet time because Aang really pressured him (thanks twinkletoes!) but in the end, he finally understood what needs to be done with the newest generation of airbenders. At the same time, he finally let go of Jinora. Jinora? She was a kid and she quickly grew up in to becoming a great master. Even Bolin, the guy who struggled the most this season finally grew. I mean lava bending, good on you man. And that's just a few characters.

Okay Mako hasn't grown at all, but they'll give him some more time next season I reckon. Still, it's a great bittersweet ending for Season 3. Here's hoping Korra's road to recovery will be interesting. And oh Zaheer... he's not done yet. Not by a long shot.

I'm beginning to understand why Nick pulled it. LoK is pretty dark for a kids show. Last time I saw these kind of things in a western kids cartoon... Batman of the Future? Beast Machines? (Talking about the tone of the show, not the quality regarding my BM comment)

Btw, regarding Zaheer;
P'li's death giving him the final push to aquire his powers flight made me kind of chuckle. In a way, her death was his Sozin's Comet.

The problem is with the Avatar State itself. It is a pretty big 'I Win' button.

With Aang, they pretty much had to build it within the story. With Korra, they are trying not to tread old storyline.

Their compromise is to marginalize the AS as much as possible.
In there attempt at doing this, they've only created inconsistencies with their own already established rules and lore

GAT DAMN...that finale.

All that action, the pacing, the abilities......feel terrible for korra.
The final shot was :(

I really want to play that korra game RIGHT NOW!!!

EDIT: I was also hoping Toph would finally show up in Ba Sing Se and be her old self at the end. Walk into the temple, kick everybody out of it, claim the throne and hold it. But they might have bigger plans for Ba Sing Se.

Oh god, why didn't this happen?

I watched both episodes hoping Toph would've come sooner or later as the Deus Ex Machina... I don't know how to feel now (I hope she's back for S4).

Loved this finale, one highlight:

Tonraq is just too badass:

Toph is already shown to be somewhat miserable at aristocracy shit, why would she want to rule a country? lol

I mean being a police officer was already weird for her character.

I don't see why smashing the ice into small shards somehow makes it disappear. Shouldn't he had been able to regather it easily?

I just saws it, I am assuming for whatever dumb reason we are still putting things in spoilers so let me go ahead and do that appropriately

1) That was sad.

2)
Bolin got the lava bending, yas.

3) Whoever pushed for that brand of animu face, today was their day.

4)
I wish she didn't have to go bald, I liked ang's design better when had hair and the tatoo. But eh whatever

Wow, what a great finale. Some of that stuff was pretty dark.

Also:

Is Korra permanently paralyzed? She was way, way too depressed for no apparent reason.

Yeah, I'm not sure why she's so depressed. It doesn't seem like she's paralyzed permanently.

For those complaining about the baldness, how else did you expect they'd put a tattoo on her? They'll probably do a time skip and she'll have hair again. I mean look at the female air bender avatar plus they've already said they won't follow everything exactly as the old Air Nomads

They had to shave her head to ink the tattoo. Female master air benders grow their hair back and leave the front open so that the arrowhead is in view

Yeah, I'm not sure why she's so depressed. It doesn't seem like she's paralyzed permanently.

There is a terrorist group who had the power to do this to you , the avatar, the coolest guy of all the cool guy's, possibly still out there and functioning. Yeah she would be depressed she could wake up dying or being kidnapped or whatever.

I mean on one level, its cool because eventually everyone could be that cool, even the good guys, but that's going to take an animu training arc time skip

I wish both genderes did that, I think they look sick with hair tatoo combo.

I prefer tenzin bald though.

I'm pretty sure the next season will deal with Kora recovering and the rest of the red lotus revealing themselves but truth be told, I'm already bored of the red lotus. They seem like a society of villains straight out of an 80s comic book. If it were up to me I would bring back the equalists with a new leader.

Can we all take a moment and appreciate
P'li's death? That was the biggest holy shit moment of the finale for me.
