Pretty close to what I had in mind. A lot of people have been cutting out the face of characters they like, making the background transparent, and giving it a yellow outer glow though, that's what I'm going for. Here is my first attempt:

I have no idea how he gets the outline to be so smooth at such a low resolution, there's gotta be some crazy downsampling going on.

That's what I figured you wanted, but I gave you what you asked anyway. I'm the one who did this one your showing here too, what a coincidence. No crazy downsampling. :)

How in the world is it so well antialiased? Every time I scale something down there is some really obvious jaggies. Either way that idea is pretty damn spot on, but I would appreciate it if two things changed. First of all, the photoshop quick selection tool always cuts out his hair, try a version where the hair is included but the shirt is still non-existant. I would also like to see one where the shirt is included as much as you can fit it into the frame, it just looks better to people who don't get the context imo. I would do it myself but I'm not a wizard :/

I think it would be damn near perfect if you got the hair right, included the shirt in a similar way I did in my previous attempt, and gave it the yellow border with the small drop shadow.

I'm telling you right now that is going to look horrendous at a low resolution, but I'll try anyway.

Came out a lot better than I thought it would. I can make slight tweaks if you want but any improvement from here is going to be marginal, complex images don't scale down well. I had to downsample it from 720p.

EDIT: I tried another one completely from scratch, new screenshot form Pointy Bits and all. IMO it can't get better than this.

Anyone here know of users with some good avatar badges, either currently or in the past (saved that is)?

In the process of making a special post on avatars, and if I find enough may include avatar badges as a section. Currently have an example of Only For N64, Animal Crossing: New Leaf, PS4, Only For Gameboy Color (although another would be nice, too). Looking for ones such as Only For Gamecube, #NoDRM, etc.

Hard to find via Google / Image Search so any other examples would be great.

Would someone be so kind to nab a pic of the new Doctor for me to use? :) Too much writing on the image. If it didn't have any of the writing and just the entire picture to use it'd be perfect.

Looks like you'd have to do partial overlays. Get images, edit them to black and white, and partially overlay them onto someone's body and keep the face.

Since my original post I found some more user examples :) If you're looking for the standalone badges themselves though I have several if you need them.

For your Breaking Bad version I first found a suitably angled hat, adjusted the lighting curves then used part of the original sky and applied the Lighten blend mode to match the existing body.
