I think because it's cross-save. If you turn the internet off under network settings, Fez launches fine after warning you several times that cross-save won't work.

Trophies are tied to your PSN account. Once he logs back into PSN (and PSN goes online) his trophies will be there.
Well, trophies are stored server side too...so no, he didn't lose them. Maybe any that he got that weren't synced.
