Digimon Adventure new series, featuring Taichi premièring in 2015

So the disk I had was Digimon World 2.

Regarding Adventure 1, personally I think the Digimon sound better in the sub, while the Human voices are on par in the sub and dub, but the nostalgia factor makes me like the human dub voices more. Watching through the sub right now, the soundtrack is miles better than the dub though.

edit: it might just be the subs on netflix, but the dialogue in the subs seems a lot more forced/unnatural sometimes. They're often saying things like "I must do this", which doesn't really sound natural to me. Example: Taichi's mom saying "I must go check the kitchen/oven"

gonna throw a question out to DigiGAF here, how many of you prefer sub to dub or vice versa?

You probably know my opinion already, and I don't want to crap on anyone's nostalgia, heck, I used to rock to Hey Digimon back then(Digimon aired with the original OST when I was a kid where I lived, but I watched the english version too).

I only realized my biggest problem with dubbed version when I re-watched it a couple of years ago and compared it to the sub. It was reworked to make it more kid friendly evidenced by the corny jokes and the loud music that can sometimes not fit the situation. Also, there is something to be said about letting the viewer being able to decipher the characters thoughts without having it spoon fed to them (But that criticism is not valid if the viewer is a kid imo). Like when Taichi left back for the digital world in episode 21.

Another thing is the different dialogue the dub inserts that can have an effect on the overall plot. For example in Tamers episode 34:
Leomon's last words in the dub were encouraging ones to Juri. In the sub, he said maybe it was his destiny to die at that moment. Those words were similar to what was said to Juri when her mother (whom she loved dearly) died. That made both events connected to Juri where its her destiny to be miserable, and just fall into depression

Again, I don't want to insult anyone's preference, but in my head, the dub isn't enjoyable to me now when I am in my 20s. A far cry from the sub to me.
Also I can't live without the Digimon OST.

PSA: The site is really badly coded, just block cookies for the domain and you can click as often as you want. (tested on chrome)

Hmm. This will be abused, alot. Muahahahaha

*whistle*

I'd take yet another iteration of the
"Yggdrasil is really being an asshole"
plot outline again, if it meant that we were actually getting a nice gang war out of it.

Things like Omegamon
just going around killing innocent Digimon
in X-Evolution just made things sad.

I was like,
"but Omegamon is soo coool, I don't want him to be the bad guy"
during the entire movie.

I think the sub in Adventure has better overall quality, as in my post above. The scene you linked definitely was better in subs (THAT SONG!), and the dialogue was better as well. The dub version wasn't bad, but it had unnecessary dialogue when Tai was floating away, and it seemed more busy in general.

So you have to tell me i-hate-u, does Terriermon say momentai in the sub of Tamers? I might not be able to watch it if he doesn't.

edit: I just noticed an incosistency starting on episode 34 of the subbed version of Adventure on Netflix. Before this, every time Vamdemon was mentioned the subs would say Vamdemon, but now the subs are saying Myotismon instead of Vamdemon. This isn't happening with any other digimon. (namely Tailmon - Gatomon, I don't think any other names were changed)

It is indeed just the subs.

I liked Agumon due to how badass Wargreymon is

It is a major factor, indeed!

gonna throw a question out to DigiGAF here, how many of you prefer sub to dub or vice versa?

I was all about Digimon English back in the day, but after watching sub recently, I prefer it far and away. Though I've only compared Adventure 1 and 02 so far though. The voices, musical composition (though at times the unnecessarily extreme quiet to the dub's consistent unnecessarily extreme bombast) and of course, censorship differences ex. (
"Reported bombing making everyone move" (Japanese)
, anyone?) make it quite superior.

That said, I have an odd respect for a few of the voices done in the English for Adventure. Agumon's voice still rings in my head as so "airy", it's distinctive and unexpected from the monster design at first sight. I really like it for that, even if it's corny. The Japanese in comparison is exactly what I'd imagine, but not in a good way more of an "Okay."

Palmon shoutouts too as I enjoy that voice in Japanese and they shifted it in the most bearable fashion for English. Same goes for Gomamon.

The greater level Digimon sound stupid in English, but they sound stupid in Japanese too, so it levels out there.

I want to throw one wrench at the sub for the original Adventure though: I got sick of the Evolution song in Japanese. Straight. Up. Sick. Of. It.

I never want to hear Brave Heart again. Maybe if it's in some nostalgic overtune for the new series like once, but not another damn time.

So the disk I had was Digimon World 2.

Good, you should give it a go!

thanks guys, I'll definitely look into Dawn/Dusk for the DS. Are there any significant differences between them that make them both worth playing?

They have the same story (more or less), but the perspective is different depending on the game you play.

You also go through the levels in a different order and whatnot, and some Digimon can only be found in their respective games.
You could end up getting them all if you had both games or did a lot of Matching over WiFi or whatever.

There's also two other DS games, Lost Evolution and Super Xros Wars that are JP only.

Lost Evolution is basically Dawn/Dusk but with an annoying evolution unlocking mechanic where you have to obtain Plates and clean them up to get that evolution unlocked.
Very annoying since you had to get 100% on the cleaning to get all of their Skills unlocked and a lot of the later Plates are crazy hard to clean up.without some errors.

Super Xros Wars comes in Red and Blue varieties, but while it looks like the other DW DS games, it has some very different mechanics in play.
Namely DigiXros (combo attacks) and DigiFusion (think DNA, but with 2x, 3x, 4x, and 5x Fusions).
It's a bit different than the previous DS games before it because of how all that stuff works.

how is it normally translated?

Well, for starters, people don't usually talk like robots unless it's for comedic effect.

also, is Tailmon male in the sub?

Digimon are all genderless. This has been stated officially on more than one occasion. I've never seen an English Digimon sub that accurately reflects this (though I'm sure they're out there).

With that said, I'd have a difficult time believing that small children speaking English as a first language wouldn't assign he/she pronouns to Digimon reflective of their perceived gender, but this is leagues away from Toei's awful ESL/dubtitle hackjob. (EDIT: On second thought, keeping the pronouns genderless would likely be the least problematic way to handle this.)

Essentially: Expect some level of incompetence in those subs and think critically with regard to the difference between what you expect to read and what you're reading. More often than not, if it seems off, it is.

For anyone following along at home that hasn't seen Toei's official Digimon subs, here's some fun examples courtesy of PositronCannon:

The version we got here was exactly like the original except for the name changes, so I grew up with the better story and soundtrack. That makes it just a choice between americanized names versus japanese names, and superior dub versus inferior dub. Easy.

hahahahahah @ those subs. That's ridiculous. I think the only subbed versions I've watched were Xros Wars and Young Hunters because they hadn't been localized at the time.

I'm just starting back up with Adventure subs on Netflix though and I'm only on episode 2 but I haven't had any issues with the subs yet.

I think the biggest difference that I noticed was the music and sound effects. I was pretty astonished at how different that first episode seemed without the crazy monster roaring coming from Kuwagamon and without the suspenseful action music playing in the background. In other words, it just has a very different tone so far.

Also I'm back in the website clicking game after trying that cookie disabling thing. It just makes it way too easy to click when you don't even have to refresh anymore.

I actually love Brave Heart, I get psyched whenever it comes on lol. I'll play World 2 eventually but I have so many games I need to play before hand.

lol those subs are terrible

PicoDevimon referred to Tailmon as a "he" in episode 34, so I was wondering. The robotic subtitles don't bother me too much, it's just weird, so it's good to know they don't actually talk like that lol

I watched the first Digimon movie last night at something like 2AM, I don't know why. I forgot how great the animations were, the music was something unexpected, too.

Now I'm listening to this song.

I'll take a look at this new series for sure.

As a rule, most subs suck. But when they're good, and the source material is good...

Well, up to Xros Wars anyway. That seemed to kinda change the rules on that there for whatever reason (see: Both Cutemon and his parents).

gonna throw a question out to DigiGAF here, how many of you prefer sub to dub or vice versa?

The castillian spanish dub, because we got the best of both worlds. Some of the, IMO, better things that got the american dub (Tai x Sora and the english names, that strangely I actually prefer, for example), while kepping the majority of the better writting of the japanese one (no shitty out of place jokes, no extra voices when camera pans out, good translation of the digimon attacks, etc...), no censoring or strange editing whatsoever, and of course best thing of all, japanese soundtrack (with the OPs and endings translated into spanish, but still using the same themes, and the music during the episode still in japanese).

Also the spanish voices are pretty good for the kids, and I love agumon's voice. It's adorable when he shouts ¡Llama Bebe! (Baby Flame)

Sub, by far. I watched both versions for Adventure 01/02 and it was amazing how the changed score/added dialogue changed the entire tone of the series, not the least of which was those stupid-ass jokes and unbearable songs. Not to crap on anyone's taste but I can't imagine preferring it unless you're in some sort of nostalgic guilty pleasure mood.

Slowly going through Tamers for the first time (up to episode 5 atm and will watch 6 tonight) and the dub's been something of a pleasant surprise regardless of the rewritten dialogue since it does an adequate job of getting the original themes across. Unfortunately it suddenly took a massive reverse turn into dumb dialogue territory with episode 5 ("I TOLD YOU ALL CHALK WAS DANGEROUS"), so I guess I'm going to have to memorize the names of the good/bad writers in the opening credits.

Another thing I like about the spanish and latin american subs is that evolutions have deeper voices most of the time. I hate that the japanese voices are the same as their child forms. Same with grown up Goku in DBZ, I have no idea why the japanese do this.

Brave Heart is an amazing blood pumping song. The evolution parts are so good if only becuase of that song, I hope they retain it for the new series.

Oh yes, this is also great. Of course the baby forms are the same people trying to do baby voices (and some of them do great), so they adult forms usually use their normal voices when dubbing, and with more monster force they just make their voices more deep.

I think the only one that doesnt do that is Patamon to Togemon, that changes from female to male voice actor, and then reverts again to her palmon voice actior for Lillymon but with a more adult voice.
Nope, saw a video just now, much deeper female voice for Togemon. Strange, I remember it much deeper.
And Palmon retains the poop joke from the japanese version when going inside the whale that is censored in the american one, and she says it so adorably its perfect, even if its a poop joke lol

Well, up to Xros Wars anyway. That seemed to kinda change the rules on that there for whatever reason (see: Both Cutemon and his parents).

There is another besides Xros Wars, though.

The only other Digimon medium I can think of that had distinct genders was the V-Tamer manga. Pal & Pul were a brother-sister duo of PetitMamon; Pal even had "eyelashes" in order to make her appear more feminine.

Ehh, ultimate forms have deeper voices for most cases.
Example: Impmon -> Beelzebumon. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MouFjAZGPjo
Tamers spoilers warning.. I like that they keep the same VA for all digimon from baby to ultimate.

Frontier made a a big deal of Izumi being a female digimon. It was her shtick in most of her fights.

Wasnt it the same with Mimi hating togemon becuase it was a giant cactus with boxing gloves and then getting lillymon and loving it again becuase she just looked like a beautiful girl?

I'm referring to the brazilian dub, so it's going to be a problem unless you speak portuguese :P

I think her dad caught her in the park, and Mimi put a blanket over Palmon because she didn't want her parents to think she had bad taste (as a plushie -.-). What a wonderful chosen child.

I can link you where I got it from, not sure if its bannable as PM or as a post. Can anyone confirm?

Funnily that's a trait that would make me really hate there, but I dont. I really like the original group and I hope they show more of how the interact and bond when they are older in the new series.
I also hope Mimi has taken off that awful pink hair (what the fuck where those stars about) and returned to her cowboy outfit, even if its different at least be in the same style (I know they do this when they show her as an adult, so there is a chance).

I'm cool with the song in general, but I suppose marathoning it made me hear it in much closer succession than many others did. lol

I'm marathoning right now and it hasn't gotten to me yet. It might if it's in 02.

yes I just watched that scene lol, Mimi's dad wanted to know what she was hiding

I'd like to know, but is the version you're thinking of in english? I don't want you to get banned over it haha so it would be nice to find that out first

Jap audio, english subs. And yes, brave heart is in 02. Its the defacto song for regular evolutions

The armor evolution process look so awesome(legacy evolutions from 01 appearing in the background) and has great music. Too bad they are so weak and sometimes lame(a submarine digimon, ok?).

Also I had no idea there were warp evolutions for the rest of the team in the digimon adventure game for psp.

ok Angemon is definitely OP.

All of the other Perfect digimon get their attacks dissipated by Vamdemon then Angemon, a Champion level, hits him with one Heaven's Knuckle and he falls to his knees.

with the exception of Angewomon, but even then she uses the power of all the other digimon + her own to beat Vamdemon

I went back to watching on Netflix because full screen + autoplay is too good. The subs aren;t bad either just weird sometimes. Meh.

I always liked how they held back Angemon. The second he came out, shit's going down.

Then when he digivolves to Holyangemon, ohohohoho...

Dat Type Effectiveness + Celestial Digimon hax.

I wonder how Holyangemon would fare against Mugendramon or Metalseadramon. I think he would get wrecked.

Probably so. Holy Hax works best against Demons, after all.

But that's why Wargreymon was the best pick for those fights. Dem Dramon Destroyers~!

alright getting into the Dark Masters arc now.

Is there a reason why none of the other digimon warp evolve? I know they do in the PSP game, but why not in the actual show lo

I've also been wondering why only a few of them have CG sequences while the rest are regularly animated during super evolution

Is it possible to play either of those without knowing japanese?

Sure...to an extent.

I beat LE without knowing much though I had to look to a guide for some story/quest stuff that I got a little confused on.
It's also very much like the other DS games, so that helped a little bit.

Couldn't say for Super Xros Wars, since I haven't played those games.

I wonder how Holyangemon would fare against Mugendramon or Metalseadramon. I think he would get wrecked.

Probably not all *that* well.

Would likely get straight-up wrecked vs MetalSeadramon, though he would likely have an advantage over Machinedramon, so who knows?
