This day's been too much. I'm expecting the PotD to ignore this, even though Sakurai's gotta be flipping his shit right now. Hopefully he proves me wrong and shows off, like, a new 3DS stage that ISN'T just another lazy Melee carry-over that was also in Brawl.
 
I'm gonna be honest, I think my favorite detail is (unless my eyes deceive me) the Clown Car waddling along on its propellers. So cute! That's a character that seemed so stupid I completely discounted the leak when it first showed up... but man, from like ~30 seconds of gameplay I'm sold.
 
I've got it!
Sakurai should show 3ds Fountain of Dreams. Not shown in the leak, amazing stage, and we can out a veteran tat wasn't confirmed by the leak or mentioned to be cut in there too, alongside something the leak DID mention
 
My unlikely dream scenario is that the 3DS gets two DLC packs leading up to the release of the Wii U version. This allows Nintendo to maintain interest in the Wii U version by announcing new characters after the 3DS version is released.

Partners Pack (October) - Ice Climbers & Chorus Kids (with Rhythm Heaven stage)
Feral Beasts Pack (November) - Mewtwo & Wolf

That would complete the character select screen and stage select screen. All four characters would be included on the Wii U disc, of course.
 
I really doubt Sakurai is all that upset. He probably expected something like this to happen at some point and had tempered his expectations accordingly. It's more a question of how much it complicates what kind of reveal schedule he had in mind. He could just proceed with his original plans, or perhaps he'll feel inclined to shuffle some items around a bit (provided they don't throw off other stakeholders like Famitsu with their ongoing coverage).

I agree to some extent, but this must have happened much earlier than expected. Maybe I was just out of the loop or remembering wrong but I only remember officially seeing the full Brawl roster a few days before the game came out in Japan.

I figured he'd take a zen water-off-a-duck's-back stance on this whole thing, but someone posted his reaction to the four Smash 64 characters getting leaked (he was so angry he considered suing) and it made me feel bad for him.

Really? He wanted to sue for that? How long before release were the four shown?


He also didn't create a story mode because he was afraid of cutscenes ending up on YouTube. So yeah...

He was a lot younger then though (or at least, most would have been), and the Internet wasn't as prevalent. No doubt he's able to handle it better now. Though I still imagine there's disappointment.
 
Kinda surprised we didn't finish off the topic today. Well we've still got the PoTD (?) yet.

I think people take this too literally. SSE ate a lot of resources, was part of the reason Brawl's development schedule was hellish (including delays), and was not well received. But they can't say "We're not going to re-deliver on this concept because we hated doing it and you hated it," so they just had to say "We wanted a thing, it didn't happen, so not this time."

Whatever the case may be, I imagine Sakurai's main concern is that Nintendo's most secretive project still couldn't keep things from leaking, which must give them pause about how they handle these things in the future. I'd imagine it has been and will continue to be a process, figuring out new ways to control who knows what, internally and externally.

Finally up to speed on all the insanity from the past 48 hours. (Seriously, it's freaking crazy we have filled up an entire thread this fast)

I like many if you feel for Sakurai, must suck a lot of the wind out of your sails to have a leak of this magnitude and by a NOA employee of all people.

Second, I LOVE the newcomers that we got for this game; especially since there is a possibility there may be a few others. Sakurai seriously spoiled us with this game and I have no doubt this will be my favorite game of all time.

Last but not least, I'm not too proud to admit I was wrong in thinking the leaks were fake so.... Anyone got any good recipes for crow?
