Super Smash Bros. for 3DS & Wii U Thread 14: Snake... had a hard life

Also really hope the stage builder isn't gone, it has a ton of potential.

Surely it would've had to show up sooner or later to the ESRB after how many penis submissions there were in Brawl?

If the stage builder is back, there needs to be some sort of community portal to download other people's stages, kind of like the Steam Workshop in Scribblenauts Unlimited. That way, uncreative people like me can check out the cool stuff other people make.

Sounds like a great Miiverse feature on WiiU to me!

Also, does anyone know who has ROB reserved for icons?

Well, I never got the Snake addition to begin with, but at least in Brawl's time an "exclusive" Metal Gear game (Twin Snakes) had been released for GameCube the previous gen. Now Snake is almost in every platform except Nintendo ones.

If that doesn't make him a better fit for something like Sony All-Stars, I don't know what does.

To be fair Metal Gear Solid 3D is an exclusive and has features the other games don't have.
So he's in the same position as he was when Brawl released. Older exclusive game, new game coming out. But like I said I understand why this is the main complaint at the moment. I sure would like the see more MGS games pop up on the WiiU or 3DS. But once again I say it comes right back to what I said earlier. After all that considering he already made it into Smash once should be more than enough reason now for future inclusions.

Alternatively, I could see it making use of QR codes, as with Animal Crossing and Tomodachi Life.

But why do you think the CSS was included in a video compilation of items relevant to the ESRB and their ratings?

I really do think it's a "big picture" look at the characters in this fighting game, so they can see you're not beating the crap out of naked women or who knows what.

They start with the big picture and then go into detail with individual cases.

The characters in the CSS shot are the same characters in the Bowser Jr battle, in all likelihood they were showing a "what the game normally looks like" and just picked 4 random characters (one of which for us lucked out to be Bowser Jr) and did a sample battle. You don't need everyone unlocked or even finished for that, they probably then showed off a team battle that is the Shulk/Ganondorf footage we saw. The rest of the video probably covered the rest of the content we've seen such as the lewd trophies and other game modes.

If showing everyone in the game was important, there would probably have been footage of every character in action, since no such footage exist it must not have been relevant to the ESRB's rating of the game. If they didn't need to see gameplay of every character they probably didn't need to see the final CSS either.

It really does look amazing. It'd be nice to have even more characters in the base game, but for now I'm assuming this is the full extent. It just seems like if the ESRB video is meant to be a summary of the game's content, that'd be the point of the part featuring the character roster.

I get what you're saying. But the CSS is nothing but tiny little headshots. It is impossible to discern the content or nature of the game from this screen. You can't, for example, see how sexualized ZSS is from her selection tile at all.

The ESRB explicitly asks for the most extreme examples of certain content: sex, violence, religious iconography, etc. The CSS in any form of completion does not lend any insight into that kind of content.

In fact, since the CSS is nothing but headshots, everybody could be totally naked and you wouldn't even know. That ambiguity is what makes it meaningless to the presentation.

For example, the video does not show complete list of trophies by name before focusing on the actual relevant content like Tharja and Candy Kong's TnA

The CSS just demonstrates the mechanic of selecting a fighter, not the explicit content any of these fighters may or may not portray. How many characters are on that CSS are trivial if the only point is a quick breeze-through of the fighter selection process for posterity, you know?

But I don't know what to believe either and I'm just playing Devil's Advocate, I guess.

I'm fairly confident the leaked Character Select Screen features the entire roster, and that there is nothing left to unlock.

I'm inclined to agree with you. The video displays all the potentially eyebrow-raising content so as to give the raters an accurate idea of how appropriate the game is for a variety of ages. The Shulk/Lucina/Ganondorf footage was probably shown as proof that the violence between human characters is stylized and cartoonish instead of bloody and gruesome like Mortal Kombat.

There's a good chance this is the final roster. Let us accept it and rejoice because Sakurai is god and Smash is good. :D

Here is my question, if that really was the final planned CSS why not just move Shulk up a row and keep the 3rd parties in a row by themselves? "Mii Fighters replaces random when custom is on" then have two random boxes, one that flips to Mii Fighters when custom is on and one that always stays random when it's off.

Just throwing out ideas

Honestly, if you'd have shown me this roster two years ago, I'd think it was the best thing ever! (Except for Mewtwo missing...)

Pretty much a guarantee that they would use Miiverse for this.

Ah, I see where you're coming from now. Yeah, I suppose you're right the CSS could be just included to illustrate the "flow" of the game, I.E. pick a fighter, then go into battle, etc. Hence, it wouldn't necessarily be required to feature the complete CSS.

Then again, if the ESRB video is meant to be a summary of the full game, I could also see them using the full CSS, with that in mind.

The only thing that kinda bugs me about this roster is no Lucas or ICs, but I can't be too upset since I never really played as either of them, and their loss is more thanmade up for by that glorious cast of newcomers. If this is the final roster, then I'll be very, very happy.

Sounds like a great Miiverse feature on WiiU to me!

you know what

i think i'm okay with the default stages after all

They might just like the upside-down pyramid design.

They might just like the upside-down pyramid design.
Exactly. From Sakurai's POV, maybe he's just more concerned about the overall "shape" of the roster and not some rigid set of OCD-like rules governing their order. Maybe Sakurai is OK with Shulk being next to the third-party characters because he really just likes the inverted pyramid.

I could actually see Nintendo not allowing stage sharing on Miiverse over concerns about inappropriate material, kind of like what they did with Miis. Maybe there will be a "with friends" method of sharing stages, but no way to put your stage up on Miiverse for everyone to see.

Alternatively, I could see it making use of QR codes, as with Animal Crossing and Tomodachi Life.

Can the Wii U use QR codes? That'd work well for the 3DS, at least.

And it may have been...for that build of the game. The video that was sent to the ESRB is almost assuredly not from the final build, after all we know ZSS's alt costume was finished rather recently close to the deadline. The same thing could happen to some more clones like Lucas and Wolf or maybe even a few more new clones like Impa. All star mode was probably still locked because the final roster was not in fact finalized at the time that video was made and submitted to the ESRB.

Hey does anyone have that picture of that text leak from a forum that was posted around the end of July? The one that predicted Bowser Jr. in the Clown Car and Shulk with 5 modes?

I know it was posted a bunch in the last thread a bunch after the leak but I can't seem to find it.

I have a feeling even if that pic is fake, the rumors/leaks that we've seen of the missing 5 and the DLC are going to wind up being combined to make up 5 characters.

So that means we can only have 5 of these: Lucas, Wolf, Ice Climbers, Chorus Men, Snake, Impa, Ridley, Dixie, Mewtwo and Mach Rider.

Choose your fate GAF.

I expect Lucas, Wolf, Ice Climbers, Impa and Mewtwo.

Lucas, Snake, Wolf, Mewtwo, and Chorus Men (I never played Rhythm Heaven but they seem interesting).

Agreed. There's no reason the CSS has to fill up every available "square." As long as it's symmetrical, as it is in the leak, then it will look fine - just look at Melee's CSS.

The thing that bugs me about this picture is, if this is the final roster, why is the penultimate row not filled up? Shulk could easily fit in there.

I'm on #TeamIncompleteRoster.

If this isn't the final roster, why isn't the penultimate row filled up now? There being more characters or not has no impact on whether or not they fill that row.

Interesting point about ZSS' alt costume, although I'd point out that when Sakurai says that outfit was completed "recently," we don't know how recent that is. It might've been done in time for the ESRB video, and like others have noted, perhaps the leaker didn't show that particular excerpt.

Believe me, I -want- there to be fewer cuts/more characters, but I just can't shake the feeling that the CSS was included for the purposes of summarizing the game's content, in this case the full character lineup.

Mewtwo... is just a clone of Lucario!
Wolf... is just a suicidal Fox!
Impa... is an old lady or something! Gross!
Ridley... IS TOO FUCKING BIG!
Snake... had a hard life. He needs some time to rest.

Also what would Kirby's copy ability be, if Shulk's monado arts swtich is his neutral B.
Why wouldn't it just be said Monado Arts? Kirby getting the same status buffs isn't too farfetched.

Bonus points if he gets his own mini Monado. (Behold the power of the Kirbado!)

Shulk is 3rd party, duh!
/s

Yeah, it totally 'feels' incomplete to me, but arguments for both sides are valid. It'll be hard to see until either sakurai announces someone NOT on the CSS, or the game is out.

Miiverse sharing of stages wouldn't be that hard to moderate. Like Pushmo World, there would probably be a 1-2 hr delay before it gets posted during which time a Miiverse mod would look over it. If something is inappropriate, the user could be flagged with a warning. If the same user posts another inappropriate stage, he would simply be banned from posting stages (or maybe form Miiverse in general). If something slips by, there's always user reporting as well.

I exaggerated a bit by saying it's a "guarantee", but given the fact it's already been done in Pushmo World, and it is already planned for Mario Maker, it only makes sense to have Smash Bros. stage sharing on Miiverse.

I'm personally hoping for Mewtwo, Ice Climber(s), Wolf, Dixie Kong, and Chorus Kids. Mewtwo because there's no sense in bringing back Doctor Mario while leaving Mewtwo cut, Ice Climbers because they're an important part of the franchise, Wolf because he's my Brawl main, Dixie because I feel she's one of the characters who really deserves to be in, and Chorus Kids because I want to win a bet, haha. I would've put Lucas in there, but he's from a Japan only game so I can see why he'd be cut. I wouldn't mind if we get Lucas instead of Dixie though.
