Super Smash Bros. for 3DS & Wii U Thread 14: Snake... had a hard life

With fire, my god Sakurai do something.
Seriously, its a darn shame that Link's face looks so ugly in Smash 4. I just don't get what happened. DK and Diddy's fur is also just ugly. Its...I dunno too realistic or something. Three characters that are just completely ruined for this game. :/

Neither of those games had to drop Assists and Pokemon to 30fps to get a solid 60 framerate or render the game in 3D, if the frame rate drops slightly then that is fine like you say, but given the other concessions I think it's safe to say Ice Climbers could cause some serious framerate issues on the 3DS version.

Yeah, that's understandable I guess.

The sad part is we'll probably never really know. To my knowledge Sakurai has never publicly spoken about any of the Melee cuts or the reasoning behind them, so I'd say it's unlikely he'll do it for this game. We'll probably never know what happened with Snake and Konami, or if the Ice Climbers were actually cut because the 3DS couldn't handle them, or why he didn't include Mewtwo despite his resurgence in popularity or whatever. We can make good guesses for most of them, but I'd much prefer to actually hear what Sakurai has to say about these cuts instead of awkwardly avoiding talking about them like with Melee.

Perhaps Sakurai didn't really think he was being ambiguous? And he wouldn't have heard the outcry because he only speaks Japanese and Japanese fans don't give a shit about metroid at all and as such Ridley wouldn't be on the radar over there. And I wouldn't consider the way he was ambiguously revealed to be similar at all to Game and Watch or Dark Pit
Dude, he's aware of that stuff. Why do you think Little Mac is in the game? Because he's aware the West wanted him in the game. Even if he can't read English, he follows what the fanbase are saying.

Obviously it's not on the same level as the Dark Pit and Game & Watch reveals, but there is some ambiguity in the way they have treated Ridley.

If I remember right, someone asked Sakurai about Mewtwo at E3 and he actually gave them an answer! It was something like "We haven't decided if we should include him or not yet", which implies they were at least considering it pretty strongly.

The Pokemon Company gets final say on Smash Bros Pokemon characters though, so we might just not know who said no.

I never even knew the west wanted Little Mac until everyone was happy with his reveal.

He follows it sure, but does he actively follow it during development? He knows people like Ridley and want him in. Doesn't necessarily mean he'd think people would take him referencing Ridley as a boss character to mean that Ridley's playable.

Also, have you considered that Little mac being in is just because Sakurai likes little mac?

But if the chorus kids are real, there's 3 avatars for a single character. Rosalina/Luma are a double character. I don't see why Ice Climbers would be any different...

Aah, so it isn't a Smash Bros. Direct, specifically. Hopefully new things are shown!

Yes, it was her stream! (Bad memory here) :3 It is pretty strange, but we possibly have crossed paths on here before without noticing. Haha.

My main? Hmm. I'd end up with Falco for character loyalty. But! From the new characters.. Mega Man, definitely! My interests are Rosalina & Luma, Little Mac, and Pit with his new changes. ^^ What about you? :0

Going to focus on Rosalina, Samus, Lucina & Palutena. With surprise appearances from some veterans (ゝω・) Going to keep those a secret for mystery fun.

Well yeah he did that, but that was about Smash 4. I was talking about how he never said anything about why Mewtwo didn't make it into Brawl. Like I said, we can infer that he was cut for time constraints (and if he's not in this game we can infer that his big resurgence in popularity didn't come until after the roster was already pretty much decided on, I suppose), but I'd still really like to see Sakurai speak on the matter.

Like, take Chrom for example. We could guess that he wasn't included because Sakurai just saw more moveset potential in Robin, but I'm still really glad that Sakurai went out of his way to explain his reasoning in his Famitsu column. It was an interesting read and a cool insight into how he thinks with stuff like this.

The teasing during the direct was pretty clearly intentional.

Now, whether he's teasing Ridley's eventual reveal as a Boss or as a player character is up for debate. It's a little silly to suggest that after such plain statements as "Yellow Devil is a boss character!" or, "Waluigi is just an assist trophy this time around!" and obvious jokes like "Zero Suit Samus is gone, just kidding, here she is!" Sakurai doesn't know that he's being ambiguous by showing Ridley's shadow and mentioning other Bosses.

If the Chorus kids are real, they probably won't split up and therefore won't have separate AI, they'd probably be the first character that actually is 2D as well so there's that added to the equation.

Ice Climbers are different to Rosalina/Luma (and Olimar/Pikmin) because the AI for ice climbers is a lot more intensive than what's going on with those other characters.

If Chorus Kids are real, they might not operate with the same kind of AI that ICs have. They might all move in lockstep, unable to act individually (that would probably make more sense for rhythm game character, anyway.) And, as others have pointed out, Luma isn't nearly as advanced as Nana.

Sacrificing one character to get Smash on a handheld doesn't sound like such a bad tradeoff.
But sacrificing a character in the version capable of handling them just to adhere to parity between two disparate versions is pretty dumb. The two versions should play to their own strengths, not be slave to the other's weaknesses.

They could also have put them only on the Wii U version, although that would break their policy of having the same roster on both consoles. I still find it hard to believe that Rosalina + Luma was perfectly doable but Ice Climbers weren't.

I, too, would be adequately quenched once we get confirmation that his alts are indeed the Koopalings.
That's the news I want to hear. I'll still like Bowser Jr. if it's just him, but if he has all of the Koopalings as alts, brace yourselves, because it will be Boots 2.0 for me.

Maybe a bit of an exaggeration but I'd agree overall. Leaving out such staple characters at this point because they hold back one version honestly comes across as petty to me. I know in Sakurai's mind he really wants these two games to work with the "same roster but different games" thing, but I really don't think it would kill any 3DS owners to have one or two characters on Wii U that weren't on the handheld version.

I haven't played it yet so I wasn't aware Luma's AI was so inferior to Nana's. Is that really something you guys were able to discern in the playable demos?

I haven't actually played Pikmin 3, though, so I can't say if I'd prefer any of these guys to Louie. Really love their designs, though. Charlie in particular.

Best thing is that they would probably actually play differently. For one, white and purple Pikmin are gone in Pikmin 3, replaced by the (IMHO much cooler) rock Pikmin.
I believe Pikmin 3 hit the sweet spot with four kinds of Pikmin that were different enough and each had enough properties to be exciting. It also hit the sweet spot between the stressing pace of Pikmin 1 and the entirely leisurely (and therefore not rewarding multitasking) Pikmin 2.

I wouldn't rule out the possibility of roster disparity as a result of future DLC either. They may launch with the same rosters but later down the road get console specific characters via DLC, this has been speculated fairly widely since the leaks, if I recall correctly.

Nana can pathfind quickly and has to follow your actions, she doesn't mimic button presses she just follows your lead. Frequently she will do her own thing, especially if she's on her way back to you.

Luma does nothing without your direct input except 'float towards Rosalina' which involves very minimal, very slow pathfinding.

Melee hacking has shown that Nana has a full CPU player's worth of AI under her hood. Luma is a floaty blob idiot. (no offense to Luma)

White and purple Pikmin are in Pikmin 3, just not in story mode.

Oh, and everyone here should buy Pikmin 3. It's easily the best Pikmin game.

Fucking Cartoon Network Punch-Time Explosion could handle tag-team characters and a transformation character with five forms on the 3DS in 2011.

Sakurai LITERALLY is a hack.

Whoa boy! I'm gonna go ahead and assume that last bit is a joke...

Serious rebuttal, though : Did that cartoon network game run at a stable 60 frames per second with lag-less online play with potentially 4 player characters and 4 AI controlled partners on screen at any given time?

Ha, OK. So, "yes", then :)

I'd wait until the game is out before making that claim. We all know how horrible Brawl was when it came to online play.

Yeah, it's so damn good, but it left me wanting more out of the main campaign sadly, I started trying to speed run the game just because I wanted to play more of the single player but it just wasn't the same.

I would have loved to unlock a 'prequel campaign' where you
play as Olimar and Louie up until the point where Olimar gets captured

Also I seem to remember the game ending on a really weird cliffhanger and Miyamoto going on about something being hidden, did anything ever come of that?

Literally everything else but his head look fine. That sucks. Good thing it's something we'll get past during regular gameplay. Still though, what the hell, he looks fine in the 3DS version.

Of course, but we can hope for the best, especially given the evidence of MK8's phenomenal online experience (top to bottom) and Namco-Bandai's experience with fighting game netcode, yes?

Sure it would be dumb, if we knew it was the case. We don't, this is very speculative.
