Nintendo reveals the "New Nintendo 3DS" and "New Nintendo 3DS LL"

Going forward I hope switchable covers, faceplates etc. becomes standards on consoles. Nintendo went crazy with custom 3DSs this generation and while I love having a Pikachu 3DS XL as opposed to a bland one, I don't like that I had to make a choice and missed out on a Zelda, Smash themed console etc. etc. The current practice also discourages buying consoles at launch, since it leaves you stuck with a bland consoles. If only the Gameboy Micro had been a hit.

When the new 3DS launches over here I'll have less hang ups about buying one when I know I shouldn't bother waiting for a special edition. The main draw for me is the faster UI and CPU though, weirdly. I hate how long it takes to do basic tasks on the 3DS. Not going to jump straight into getting one though, I think I'd much rather put the money towards a PS4. Nintendo should price this fairly generously. The technology is far from spectacular even in this improved model. And the majority of fans already own a 3DS....if they want a second sale a small selection of games exclusive to the new model likely won't be enough. It won't be enough for me, I doubt.

Anyway, guessing the lack of Direct at least in the EU was so this announcement doesn't cannibalise the sales of the new Smash Bros. 3DS console?

So they increased the small model's screen by .38th of an inch? That's a small but nice upgrade. I think I'll go with the small model, I bought a 3DS at launch and then replaced it with an XL last year but I don't really like how the games look on the bigger screen.

No resolution bump. We don't know how much better the CPU is, I'm guessing the main reason they increased it at all was for the eye-tracking, which is probably pretty resource intensive and which has to be available at all times since it is one of the main advertised features. It's also being used for other OS stuff, and judging by the Xenoblade footage (which is downgraded from the Wii version quite a bit) there isn't much left over for games.

Here the spec : http://www.nintendo.co.jp/corporate/release/en/2014/140829.html

Not sure what there is to translate there. It's just the price and what each set includes. The system, a touchpen, a 4gig microSD card, manuals, 6 AR cards. No adapter.

Did everyone miss this? It looks like the 3DS XL wasn't a fluke and Nintendo for whatever reason thinks most consumers won't need the AC Adapter :/

I wonder if there are plans for the new 3ds with the added functionality to perform Wii u gamepad functions. The extra stick, BH buttons and NFC give it all it need.

So with the new 3ds is ONLY microsd usable on it?

Yes. Like every phone/portable device in the last few years outside of cameras, Nintendo has moved to MicroSD. It saves space on the chassis and may even be cheaper to implement (really; so few devices have full-size SD now...)

I was holding out for a 3DS, but I'm going to wait now for sure.

Anyone else thinking with this 2nd stick, it will also now function as a Wii U GamePad controller?

Considering that this isn't a mere "revision", and some games will ONLY work on it (like Xenoblade Chronicles), calling it the "New 3DS" and making it look so similar to the existing 3DS is a TERRIBLE business move. Everybody is going to think this is just a model revision, meaning sales will be hurt, plus I can see a lot of people buying Xenoblade Chronicles, or other games, and then not being able to play them on their vanilla 3DS.

As soon as a system has exclusive games that can't be played on previous systems, it needs it's own identity. People are comparing this to the Game Boy Color, but there was a clear difference between the OG Game Boy and the Game Boy Color. Color itself obviously being the biggest differentiator, but also the system looking different enough.

Dude that right stick is soo freaking small.....why?? Owell guess I waited long enough I'll get this version when I pick up Persona Q for cheap.

Some peoples reactions to this have been weird. This is obviously a stop gap for their new console/handheld hybrid thing and it will fill it perfectly fine. Having exclusives like xenoblade will move hardware for the next 2 years or so. Will definitely buy once it comes out since I still have my launch 3ds.

Yes! Time to finally upgrade from my og 3ds. New 3ds xl will be mine asap. Probably not going to get Xenoblade since I've made progress in dolphin.

Didn't it when the 3DS launched that Nintendo in Japan and Europe don't include adaptors, but in North America, they typically include it. Alot of people were worried until NOA re-affirmed that they'll get one.

My point is that it's still going to have to go through the same process as any other game. Just because the Wii version was localized already, it's not like they just type the any key and voila, you have a fully localized 3DS port!

Just hit the any key and the port will sort itself out, ok, gotcha

I'm sorry, but you come off as rather ignorant about what goes into this process. There is very little work required in this case, assuming it's the same Xenoblade with the same features, and assuming there's an American new 3DS.

The game may not come out in the west for other reasons, but they would have nothing to do with difficulties localizing it. And I'd be willing to bet my avatar it will come to the west if the system comes.

Once again, Nintendo is proving their ineptitude in naming a console. This is only gonna hurt them and divide their consumer base further.

I don't have any issues with the console, but the branding is downright weird (not out of the usual for Nintendo), but putting "new" in front of any piece of technology is a massively shortsighted thing to do.

So, they already announced Monster Hunter 4G for the 3DS a while back - they're not going to change it and make it exclusive to New 3DS are they?

Exclusive? No. Enhanced? Yes.

I don't see how it will hurt them nor divide their consumer base "further".

I'm unsure if i should hop on. i mean i rarely play with the 3DS XL as is so its either trade it in for it or keep it and just pony up and get the new 3DS XL.

want to see the price though.

Oh so the improved 3D is an eye tracking based adjustable parallax barrier? That's pretty cool. So no good and bad angles, should just display correctly as long as it knows where your head is.

Wait.
Nintendo just announced a new hardware with specific software (albeit compatible with previous software) with the same name as the older one?

Why? A slightly better processor and a second stick? Which I don't even see, I see a nub, is that suppose to be a stick? Can games use AA now with the better processor? Or is this really for porting Wii games to this new 3DS?

Am confused.

Is the no switchable covers for LL thing true? That seems like a pretty silly thing to leave out.

What about removable batteries for LL?
