Nintendo reveals the "New Nintendo 3DS" and "New Nintendo 3DS LL"

Now all we need is a New Circle Pad Pro so we can finally have support for 3 analog sticks (well, 2 analog sticks and a tiny nub).

I hate waiting to know what colors NA will get. We better not get burnt on white this time too.
I'm assuming all the regular 3DS size will just be black and white to easily accommodate extra shells.

Of course, this could be a GBA micro situation where North America essentially gets no extra shells.

After owning both the 3DS and XL, I can't go back to the smaller one but the design with the custom plates is making me seriously contemplate getting both.

- 3DS is here to stay
- Normal size 3DS is here to stay!
- 3D is here to stay!

I'm happy and I want it now. Also, faceplates. I'm uber shallow when it comes to these, I'll buy a ton... but I can't decide if they look better on the white or black 3DS :x

I want to ehchange my XL for the smaller new one. That sexy form factor of XL, with them SNES buttons and better battery life.

Who's with me?

I feel like that second analog "stick" is a perfect encapsulation of Nintendo's present problem where their hardware isn't sufficient for the "core" but also not suitable for casuals.

Most gamers don't want a second stick. Given that most portable gamers seem to be happy with no sticks at all, the number who feel a second stick is a significant improvement represent a distinct minority. But of those who do want a second stick, what they've created will be entirely unsatisfactory. They want two built in, full analog sticks similar to the Vita, not two slide pads which are asymmetric both in position and in shape, giving a tiny nub on the right hand side. This second "analog stick" is not enough for the "core" gamers who aren't already on board, too much for the casuals who would be fine without an analog stick entirely.

And still many core-gamers regard the GameCube-controller one of the best. And the n3DS nub is a direct descendant of that.

I think people loved the ergonomics of that controller not necessarily the quality of the build. I loved the GC controller but it's not perfect. And I was never a big fan of the joystick nub on that either.

I don't really get all the people complaining about the second stick, I don't see why a little nub like that can't work for camera control.

Well crap. I bought an silver XL at the beginning of the year and there's no way I'm trading it. I can do without all the extra stuff.

I hope there aren't too many games that come out exclusively for the new hardware, because if there are, I'd be pissed. I already have Xenoblade, so I'm not worried about that, but anything else that may follow has me worried.

To be fair, the DSi did not really replace the DS, as there were virtually no exclusive retail games for it and the games that did make use of the hardware almost always just used the camera for ancillary purposes.

No there weren't many retail games for it but it had an entirely new digital library added.
I doubt this will get a lot of exclusives either except for more Wii ports. You might see some enhanced/multi boot cards if that hasn't been announced already.

I think we're too quick to dismiss the new nub thingy. I mean we have no idea how it will control. If it's like the c-stick it could be good, but if it's like those nubs on old laptops it might feel too odd

I'm someone who has never been satisfied with 3DS. It has so many great games for it, but I don't enjoy playing it because of the jaggy graphics. Like, Luigi's Mansion Dark Moon looks worse than the original Luigi's Mansion on Gamecube. We should be beyond Gamecube graphics at this point. It's even worse on the XL, because it just stretches out the image.

So on that account, I'm excited about this because it's taking it to where 3DS should have been at the first place. On the other hand, since this truly is a new console with games that can't be played on a regular 3DS, I think they should change the name. And I thought Nintendo had already learned this lesson with the reception Wii U had, with people thinking it was just a revised version of the Wii or a special controller for it.

Nintendo sticking with the "new"series eh?,not only the are rehasing Mario games now systems too!

Those color buttoms look bad,imo im hoping this new redesign helps Nintendo on their home market, as this is the second redesign they get, they should market it big.

There are so many baffling design choices here.

I can't wait for the fucking confusion at retail.

Parents and casuals will need to learn the differences (and non-differences) between DS, 3DS, 2DS, and "new" 3DS software. What a marketing/branding nightmare.

So you're telling me the New 3DS XL has a lower PPI than 96 (the current XL) or whatever? Terrible if true. Even if it's the same it's still bad.

Beyond horrible. If you're going to go out of your way and create what is essentially a new system, you should improve it in all aspects to provide value and incentive for the consumer to pick it up. IMO, this is a joke.

Nope, it's reduced. Imagine that!

Looking at the case designs, one is almost spoilt for choice.

This one matches my work PC's desktop wallpaper haha.

I'm thinking about buying the smaller new 3DS.

I have both the regular 3DS and the XL. The XL was an improvement in pretty much every way (except speakers) and I love my XL. But I'm kinda leaning towards the smaller one this time. The buttons look really nice (and nice on new XL too) and so far it looks like the faceplates are exclusive to the smaller new 3DS. Plus it's slightly smaller and weighs a little less. But who knows. I haven't decided yet and it's going to be tough making a decision.

I am extremely happy that the normal size 3DS is being revised. I own and prefer the current XL, but not for it's size, only for the other improvements. This new one looks like a normal size using the XL improvements.

Ridiculous reactions here, heh.

Realistically, the only moaning should be about the 3-4 exclusive titles that will be developed for this system in the next couple of years, until the 3DS successor arrives.

Do you want to spend the money for these 3-4 games? Probably not worth it.
If you're crazy for Nintendo hardware and software, then perhaps you want to add this to your collection.

I seriously, cannot find where all the other opinions about this reveal are coming from. Seriously guys.

True, but it also did not stop the production of retail DS games and lived an incredibly short life before being truly replaced by the 3DS.

Well yeah, I'd expect the same here. Guess that means the new platform is a bit further away than I was expecting, like late 2016 / early 2017.

Trade it back in if need be. You should be able to get a full refund right? Although I'm guessing it's mostly due to Smash which should you wait on the new model, you'll likely have to miss out on. Why do they announce these things so many months in advance (talking bout NA and Europe)?

Let's hope. If we're looking at a March release in NA, I'll just keep this one and trade it in for credit at a gamestop or something, even though I hate doing that.

Or I'll buy both because I am a consumer whore.

Everything stands or falls on whether or not it's regionfree or not.
It could iron my clothes and do my dishes, if it has a region lock, I'm not going to buy it.

Other than that I still applaud the upcoming changes. I like the customization a lot, and the improved 3D is really a step up.
Would stick with a smaller sized 3DS rather than a large size, so glad they aren't forgetting those.

You have to be kidding me. Another new model this time with new specs?

Fuck. I already own all three of the original models (two US units and a 2DS for European games).

If they were going so far as to include new hardware they should have a least improved the resolution (by an even number for perfect scaling).

About time for second analog.

"It wont happen."

"Theyll segregate their user base."
That little button looking thing is an analog stick? :(

I still think segregating the user base in this fashion is a horrible idea.
