Nintendo reveals the "New Nintendo 3DS" and "New Nintendo 3DS LL"

Is this or is this not the next new handheld generation?
This is a successor to current hardware with stronger hardware and exclusives belonging to the same generation as the predecessor, just like DS to DSi.

This IS a 3DS successor, yet it's an 8th gen system still.

All of these news articles are claiming a 2015 release in the west, but I'm still clinging onto a shred of hope that I'll be able to get my hands on one before the year ends :'(

(Also, NOA would REALLY be missing a golden opportunity by skipping out on these for the holiday season!)

I'm pretty sure Nintendo themselves said no 2014 Western release.

Also, is the screen different? What is this image supposed to show?

new-nintendo-3ds-compare-02.0.0_cinema_1280.0.jpg

Ambient light sensor to dynamically change the screen brightness on the new model.

It's not shown in the image but there will also be eye tracking from the camera to automatically adjust the 3D effect so the sweet spot is closer to where you're looking at.

What a great idea, releasing a new console when they're struggling to get out content to their current two consoles.

Certainly better than releasing a system that offers basically no major improvements over what's currently available, I can safely say that much. Same size, same resolution, and some weird C-stick thing?

I have a 3DS XL. Why would I want this?

Those colored buttons on the regular 3DS.

I need it. Since the screen is bigger, I'll probably trade in my 3DS XL.

Weird that Nintendo didn't just release a new handheld..

I couldn't possibly hate this redesign more.

Still no full-sized second circle pad. This was like their third chance to fix that. I want a second circle pad symmetrical with the left one, with the ABXY buttons symmetrical with the d-pad. I hate playing VC games on the 3DS because the ABXY buttons are offset from the d-pad. Ugh.

Then they color the buttons. Not only do they have the balls to stick to their backwards-ass Japanese button placement, but now they want to bring their old colors back despite the fact that we now have an industry standard. Xbox, Steam, iOS, Android and Amazon devices all use the same ABXY button placement and coloring scheme. They better drop the button colors for the US release.

This might be the first gaming device that I refuse to buy on principal.

Damn, this is awesome. I don't know if I want the smaller one or the XL. Obviously I love the size of the XL, but too bad the OG size didn't see a DSi screen size increase :(

I'm pretty sure I've read the New 3DS's screens are 20% (1.2 x larger) than the OG 3DS's screens.

Did the DSi really sell that well?

The DSi also released into a different climate.

Bummed at the backwards comparability and name. Just going to cause more confusion.

Also, that second stick placement doesn't look ideal.

But where is the sensor?? I actually like this idea a lot.

Games that are being devolved for New 3DS exclusively could be rendered at a higher resolution. Game for both could change resolution depending on the system. Kinda like how some games on the Gameboy would appear in colour on the Gameboy colour, but black and white on the original Gameboy. The resolution doesn't have to be that much better, anyway.

The Game Boy Color took apart the layers of the game image and give each one a color according to a color palette, unless the game came with one already. You'll need hardware strong enough to emulate original 3DS games to give them a higher screen resolution, or leave them alone (like the original DS games on the 3DS, which look worse unless you play them in 1:1 mode); or they will need to be written for a higher resolution (which considering how sluggish Xenoblade runs on 3DS despite being exclusive to the new 3DS, they would need hardware much stronger for that).

Either way, there is no advantage to doing that, only problems. Their next-gen system will certainly have the higher-resolution screen, but the 3DS will stay a 3DS.

There's an industry standard for... coloring buttons? And on iOS, Android and Amazon devices? I'm curious.

Holy shit, Xenoblade going 3D is my own personal megaton. That game already gave me vertigo on the Wii with its immense scope, this is going to be a real trip.

Hopefully, we're also getting improved textures, those were pretty blurry in some places. More detailed cutscene models would be great, too, but I doubt that'll happen.

Interesting! I'll have to wait to see what the exclusive software will be like to make a decision.

How big are the screens compared to the original 3DS'? Are they somewhat bigger?

If the screen is larger I'm going with a new 3DS for sure. 3DS LL/XL is slightly too big IMO, so I'll be trading mine in towards this new happy medium.

Pretty exciting upgrade from my POV.

so some games will only work on "New 3DS"? or?

Then they've made the same mistake as with the Wii U name.... people will get confused.

Nope, they didn't make any mistake. First of all "New 3DS" is so simple, ANYONE can understand it. Second of all, this is still a "3DS", so it's just a revision, which makes it a completele different situation compared to Wii > Wii U.

They use this button placement since the SNES, is the others that use it differently, they won't change because of that.

Splitting the fanbase seems like a bad idea, but hopefully this means that the 3DS will have a long lifespan like the DS/DSi generation. Hopefully I won't have to get a new 3DS to play Pokémon, though.

this is a joke, right?

Wait, do I have to remove the back panel to access the SD card? That'll suck for getting Animal Crossing QR codes off, etc.

You probably will if you want the best experience. After all, gen 5 were DSi games. Not exclusive mind you, but they were indeed DSi cards.

Maybe if we start a petition, we can get the American and European New 3DSes not region locked. And get the Super Famicom buttons on the LL/XL.

That would be great.

I wish the new 3DS would boost performance for the older games. I think the PSP did that when the refresh upped the CPU? I remember you could set it at 333mhz and it would enhance the performance of existing games in some cases.

Nintendo's layout is the correct placement; everybody else is using the backwards design. Sure, it's Nintendo's fault for losing their industry relevance and letting Sega's knockoff design become an industry standard, but that doesn't change the fact that Nintendo's design is the one Nintendo should always use.

I just realized how bad the new cartridge slot positioning is for me. I usually rest my fingers underneath the console. I do the same with all handhelds. Hopefully that won't be enough pressure to accidentally eject the cartridge.
