Nintendo reveals the "New Nintendo 3DS" and "New Nintendo 3DS LL"

You can't just add buttons mid-system. It doesn't work. Those shoulder buttons will be gimmicky at best, as they cannot be implemented knowing for a fact that the user has them. Same with the second stick.

I don't get Nintendo. The DSi saw almost zero support. They're launching this iteration over three years after the system has been out.

This is what the system should have launched as. They should have just held this stuff back for the new actual major handheld and saved themselves the money. Options are good, but sometimes they just don't make sense. Looks pretty, though.

About time for second analog.

"It wont happen."

"Theyll segregate their user base."

There's nowhere to put the buttons!

There's a bunch of games that support all those buttons already. It just took longer than I expected for them to squeeze them all in there.

Which is why I mentioned completely changing the button positions, because that's about the only way it would work on any 3DS without changing the size.
I think they could get away with leaving the face buttons as is but you'd probably want to move them up a bit for ergonomics sake.

So you're telling me the New 3DS XL has a lower PPI than 96 (the current XL) or whatever? Terrible if true. Even if it's the same it's still bad.
It's the same screen resolution, but a slightly larger screen. So, yeah, Nintendo still have no challengers for the 'worst display in a consumer product' award.

I like the look of the white N3DS with the colored buttons, but this feels like a half-step. Maybe working out some ideas before the true successor. I dunno... I'll stick with my XL for now. I could always pass along my XL to my nephew should I find myself tempted.

This is something I've been thinking about for a while, but did Sharp even invest in any more glassless 3D screens after 2010-2011? Because I've never heard of higher resolution glasses free screens this size even existing. This is why I've thought that there is no way 3D is in the next handheld.

Are the 3DS region free? I'm going to be in japan when these are released and may just pick one up there.
No. No it is not. That has been my biggest issue with the system.

There was an Android phone a while ago with a 3D screen that was higher resolution, I believe.

XL is the same, but the smaller model has a bigger screen than the old smaller model.

So the PPI is reduced on the small model because it's getting a stretched screen. Amazing how the screen quality keeps getting lower as new models come out. I guess the New 3DS would be my model of choice considering it's PPI is higher than the XL and the screen is bigger than OG. Not that I'm buying it, especially not at $199 or whatever the price will be.

The additions are good; and the new 3D screen alone makes me want to buy it despite already owning a 3DS; but I'm wondering whatever happened to Nintendo's hardware designers...were they all fired or something? This looks like it was designed by the accountant.

The funnies part is that the new Smart Watches have a higher resolution than the 3DS. Let me repeat that: Watches have a higher resolution than the 3DS. The resolution of the 3DS is honestly my biggest gripe with the system, far more than the 2nd analog ever was.

But.. but.. I was going to get a 3DS this month!

Oh well, guess I'll just grab some Vita games for now then. :(

No idea what to do with my Persona Q pre-order now, though...

Q: Can it play all Nintendo 3DS and Nintendo DS games?

A: As far as Nintendo DS/DSi software goes, it won’t be able to play game cartridges that require a specific connections to the cartridge slots, such as the ones that required the GBA cartridge slot on the DS Lite and DS.

Other titles, for example Pokémon Tretta Lab, that requires extra hardware that fit the original 3DS’ shape and size, also won’t be compatible.

I see nothing about region locked games. Hype!

I wonder if this will open up a few more VC options for them. My main interest are exclusive games and/or if regular 3DS games run better.

I'm pretty sure the DSi saw healthy sales.

So, were are we now? I'm starting to get hyped about that black mini 3DS with exchangable faceplates.

I feel like that second analog "stick" is a perfect encapsulation of Nintendo's present problem where their hardware isn't sufficient for the "core" but also not suitable for casuals.

Most gamers don't want a second stick. Given that most portable gamers seem to be happy with no sticks at all, the number who feel a second stick is a significant improvement represent a distinct minority. But of those who do want a second stick, what they've created will be entirely unsatisfactory. They want two built in, full analog sticks similar to the Vita, not two slide pads which are asymmetric both in position and in shape, giving a tiny nub on the right hand side. This second "analog stick" is not enough for the "core" gamers who aren't already on board, too much for the casuals who would be fine without an analog stick entirely.

Well, it's nice to want things, but there is just no room for 2 full circle pads in the 3DS' casing. It is just not feasible.

Besides that, most if not all of this "minoirty" who really want/need to have a second analog stick, probably already have the Circle Pad Pro and soon will have an even better version with the upcoming Monster Hunter 4 circle pad.
Those solutions also improve the 3DS' ergonomy by quie a bit, which definitely makes longer gaming sessions MUCH more comfortable.

That being said, do we really know how the New 3DS nub feels like? No one has tried it yet. Maybe it works really well? But even if not, it doesn't matter, because optimal solutions are already available.

What does this mean in terms of the next handheld from Nintendo? Does this mean that the new 3DS is going to be around for another 2-3 years before a newer handheld?

I can kind of see the time table for newer releases shrinking since customers are so use to yearly releases with smartphones and tablets but I really don't want that to be the case.

Damn it. The standard New 3DS has the better shell design but the XL has the better button colours and size. Getting the XL.

I always liked the multi colored buttons, I hope that stays in the US version.

Well, this thread served it's purpose. All the useful info is on the first couple pages with the screenshots and specs. Now it's time for the "long tail" of nitpicking.

Bought a DSi when it came out. Great hardware but the software support was meh. Not going to bother with this one, unless there are some super awesome exclusives or like a dozen great Wii ports.

Didn't the DSi only add the camera and make some other changes? I don't remember it adding buttons

Either way ya it doesn't matter, this thing will sell

In Japan it will fly off the shelves, but I have my doubts the western market will give a shit about any of the new features. It will give the 3DS a nice boost to not be straddling 100k a month, but at the same price as the current systems I don't really see what there is to get the huge amount of people who have moved on to smartphones excited about.

I actually was thinking about upping to a 3DS XL this week in preparation for Smash. Guess I will stick with my crappy 3DS a little longer.

It seems like, in general, people who wanted a new revision are happy about this because they would have gotten it even without the hardware improvements. And people who didn't care are upset at the prospect of not being able to play some games (though we've only seen one as of yet).

I'm not saying the system will flop.

I'm saying that games won't use the features of the new system.

Oh, fair enough, I thought you meant support from consumers.

Argh! I slept through everything!!!
Well first off, yay!
I was expecting this to happen this year and I was really surprised when nothing came out at E3.
I really like the New 3DS LL model, the second analog stick looks a little off. But I won't know for sure until I get my hands on it.
I am really, really hoping they improved the CPU and inside hardware. The origin 3DS feels a little behind most systems and I think it needed this boost.
That blue is gorgeous by the way in the new 3DS LL model, holy crap I love that blue. Almost reminds me a little bit of my DSi XL.
I don't care for the new position of the stylus, with time and wear I'm scared it might fall out.
I am really looking forward to hearing more about the New models! I will of course be upgrading.

People can still use their circle pad pro and the extra shoulders could be put in the touch screen too. I predict games playable on both consoles with new 3ds being the better platform to play. I don't really see fragmentation as a problem.

edit
I wonder if they are gonna update games like OoT & ALBW to use the extra buttons for weapon shortcuts. probably haven't thought about but it would entice more gamers to upgrade.

Wowza. I wasn't expecting this news. Let's see here...

Oh just rewatched the presentation, only the smaller new 3DS has interchangeable cover plates the XL ones don't.

Oh come on.

Regardless, I may get the XL of this. I'm digging some of the improvements.

Let's hope. If we're looking at a March release in NA, I'll just keep this one and trade it in for credit at a gamestop or something, even though I hate doing that.

Or I'll buy both because I am a consumer whore.

I'd still hold onto my Zelda Gold too, if I had one!
