Nintendo reveals the "New Nintendo 3DS" and "New Nintendo 3DS LL"

Believe me, you don't want upscaling. Best thing to do is use the same resolution screen. It would be like making bigger screen TV's 3K instead of 1080, despite things always being at 1080. Native resolution is always best.

Unless they double the x and y resolution exactly. This way they could do a very simple nearest neighbor upscale without any filtering. Like the Vita does with PSP games.

The new 3DS model doesn't have any logos on the back and looks extremely sexy as a result.

The LL version has labeling on the rear of the unit that looks terrible in comparison.

Game Boy could play GBC titles if they were not GBC only. You can think of these as GBC enhanced games (like DSi enhanced). These tended to be black cartridges.

GBC only were clear cartridges (DSi only are white cartirdges...well I think Pokemon white was white as well *hits self in confusion*)

Ah, I see. I was unaware of this. I always thought the original GB was "forward" compatible with all GBC titles.

I've noticed that they called the little nub a "c-stick" rather than a circle pad. Does that essentially mean that it will have a limited range of movement, such as 4 or 8 way movement, rather than a full 360 degree range of motion?

I'd think it's more likely an attempt to lean on the nostalgia of the N64 and GameCube controllers - as they have done with the colour of the face buttons - while acknowledging the fact that it has a slightly different form factor to the left stick.

Really? Shit. Had no idea. Ok cool, not a problem than. I always thought it was just another stick. Are these things comfortable?

It's very ergonomic, it lacks one button though, the L button, but the triggers on the CPP (ZL ZR) is better for me since it emulates console controllers in terms of position

Gamecube controllers had the right stick also named the c-stick. I guess it's their way of naming a secondary control stick that isn't a direct mirror of the main one (like the left/right control sticks on Wii U). It'll probably be full 360° range of motion.

Upscaling to the same screen size shouldn't be all that bad, though they probably won't be able to get exactly 4x the res for it to upscale perfectly. The screen door effect on it atm (especially in 3D mode) is horrible.

They are very comfortable. However, I don't see the point of purchasing one considering the new games won't run on old 3DS consoles.

Dunno, I always saw "C" as camera. I mean they had C Buttons first, then a C Stick and now maybe its full 360?

This is just going to hurt any future handheld launch. People like myself will just wait it out for a revision.

It's been 1,250 days since the 3DS was originally released in North America. How long do you think is appropriate to release an improved version of a game system?

I don't understand this.

Is this a new handheld? Will new 3DS games run on my 3DS?

Think of it as a New iPad. New features and functions, improved specs, different hardware design. It still runs all of the old iOS apps, but future iOS apps may not run on older hardware.

New 3DS exclusive games won't run on the older 3DS models. Right now there aren't many planned. However, future 3DS games may run better on New 3DS. It's pretty simple if you just think of it as a phone/tablet revision.

Its official:

Nintendo is ran by lunatics. So many damn revisions/models. These people are out of control.

How many PSPs did we get, including the truly terrible PSP go (which I unfortunately own and can't connect to my Wi-Fi network)? It's par for the course with handhelds. Tech advances faster than a generation cycle and you take advantage.

This is the biggest bullshit I have ever seen. Nintendo just pulled a 32X, who the fuck splits the userbase. I refuse to buy a new 3DS, I HAVE ONE ALREADY.

Just make a new damn handheld, not this inbetween shit.

I cannot believe people comparing this to the GBC. That came out 8 YEARS after the Game Boy. This is not comparable at all. This is the 32X all over again.

DSi. Same damn thing.

So if I import JP Smash/Pokémon and a *new* 3DS, can I play with my US Smash/Pokémon and my OLD 3DS XL?

I need to know.

I was hoping that if they decided to add a right "stick", they would fully redesign the handheld and they would emulate the Wii U layout.

This thing doesn't look comfortable at all, on an already uncomfortable to use device.

All of their revisions on their previous handhelds haven't hurt them. Why would this be any different?

3DS
3DS XL
2DS
New 3DS
New 3DS XL

Consumer confusion and fatigue are bound to bite them in the ass if they keep doing this. We're probably a year or two out from the 3DS successor and they're dropping another 3DS on people?

Nintendo weirdness.

This does likely put back my timetable for a new handheld announcement. Which is probably what Nintendo is hoping it does. Try to salvage some money out of the hardware. Meager upgrades could potential help knocking costs down. Since 3DS hardware is pretty weak for mobile hardware even by 2011 standards. Woefully underpowered in 2014. If the memory upgrade rumors hold true it's still really damn weak on a very low res screen, but much closer to a GCN/Wii in poly throughput with a much more modern featureset. Should amount to some pretty games in its own right. Nothing approaching the best of mobiles or Vita, but much prettier stuff than 3DS is capable of normally.

And that little nubbinstick is just adorable.

The name is fucking stupid, especially after having DS/3DS Wii/Wii U confusion.

I feel bad for the mom who goes to the store and doesn't knownif little Timmy wants the 2DS or the DSi or the 3DS or the New 3DS or the 3Ds XL or the new 3DS XL.

As a huge supporter for nintendo over the years, I have no idea what the hell nintendo is doing anymore. You are not apple. This is not "The New iPad". Confusing news, to say the least.

This revision is for people that bought 3DS's in 2011 and 2012. Targets people who are accustomed to 2 year upgrades for phones.

They will try to target kids with the amiibo line, but it is clear that they are targeting fans with Xenoblade. This revision, I don't think, is for kids, that's why they have the 2DS. So all future games that are kid oriented will not be exclusive to the new system, for example they will release a dongle for NFC for the original systems.

This is classic Nintendo aiming at its core. It's the same thing they did with the DSI and the GameBoy color.

They don't sell 2DS in Japan.

2DS (which is not a thing in Japan), 3DS and and 3DS XL are identical systems. This is basically 3DSi, the first one that is actually different other than form factor. Also, the XL models don't cause any confusion, they're just... XL models.

Clearly we're not a year out from the 3DS successor. People are just assuming we are for some unknown reason.

Also, I am fairly certain that the new 3DS & 3DS XL are to replace 3DS and 3DS XL in retail so that confusion will be short-lived

This is a list of Nintendo handhelds that didn't get a revision:

Ds to dsi was so minor, with no real substantial software exclusives. This is not the case with the 3ds. This is going to hurt Nintendo in the long run. Just my opinion. The market today is not the same as it was during previous generations.

I actually love the name.

I had a similar idea of what the WiiU was going to be before the rumors of the screen came about. My thought was using the then popular NSMB theme calling it New Wii. Little late, but I'm glad to see one of my ideas is being adopted.

Just because Nintendo had similar business decisions in the past, doesn't make this one any less shitty.

"New" 3DS is a quarter-way successor to the current 3DS. Primarily due to having exclusive games not available to the current 60m+ 3DS owners.

Did I mention the 3DS is only slightly over 3 years old?

It will have essentially been out 4 years by the time the New 3DS comes out - the same span of time the original DS was out before the DSi was released.

It doesn't add any new features (just integrates features from the CPP).

There will be 1.5 exclusive games released for it, just like the DSi.

You can still play your old 3DS games.

Who gives a shit?

There was not ONE dsi exclusive worth a damn. I will bet that a new Zelda will be exclusive to this.

Based on what?

Wait, so it won't have the same buttons as new 3DS?

Fuck? Are you serious? This runs different games? Is it different specs? What in the fuck?
