Nintendo reveals the "New Nintendo 3DS" and "New Nintendo 3DS LL"

and what I mean by Hella dumb I mean the idea of new 3ds exclusive games

like a mini next gen jump for a couple games? ffs. horrible idea.

dsi was fine cause the exclusive was just a bunch of dsiware smaller games, but making new games exclusives in such a small revision is just stupid

Ds to dsi was so minor, with no real substantial software exclusives. This is not the case with the 3ds. This is going to hurt Nintendo in the long run. Just my opinion. The market today is not the same as it was during previous generations.

I disagree. Nintendo needs to sell hardware to keep its business going. If 3DS hardware sales are slowing down, which they are, this could be a huge boon to them, especially if any exclusive software is compelling enough for people who already own 3DS systems to want to upgrade.

I know I'll be getting this at launch at least. I think it's awesome.

This isn't just for Japan.

It is for this year at least.

Consumer confusion and fatigue are bound to bite them in the ass if they keep doing this. We're probably a year or two out from the 3DS successor and they're dropping another 3DS on people?

Yeah, what the hell Nintendo. I mean, just look at this:

DS
DS lite
DS i
DS i XL

With that much confusion, how the hell did the Nintendo DS become the best selling console of all time? I don't get it.

Cough cough, Virtual boy....
Oh well :P

They freaking added an exclusive shop to it, lol. Also, you're right, the market today is way more used to buy gadgets annually.

I'm expecting some software will be cross platform.

This just gives me vibes of when the DSi was announced since it was slightly better and had a few games that unlocked special features or only ran on it (am I correct on that last part?). Then the 3DS showed up a few years later as a true successor to the previous systems.

I'm wondering if this will be a similar situation where it's a boosted 3DS that will get a few exclusive games but will have a true replacement later since this will fragment the user base. But then this could be the new plan, boost the specs and add features and keep the 3DS around for a while...

It has a CPU and RAM boost. It had over 400 exclusive titles. You may consider them "un-substantial", but it existed and you need to accept it.

Most titles will just be enhanced on this, just like the DS & DSi. Relax.

How many PSPs did we get, including the truly terrible PSP go (which I unfortunately own and can't connect to my Wi-Fi network)? It's par for the course with handhelds. Tech advances faster than a generation cycle and you take advantage.

Every PSP game could run on the PSP1000. This isn't really the same situation. It's more like DS -> DSi where some games required the new hardware but most will still work on everything.

It really depends. If they can get japanese 3rd party devs to make versions for both with New 3DS advances. It could be ridden out in Japan for two to three more years. I have no clue if this will help in the west at all. I really really really doubt it.

Yet besides like 3 DS i exclusive games, they all played the same games and had the same controls.

Are we positive that this is going to be the name outside Japan?

What If this is called the 3DS Advance?

Remember that they recently trademark the advance name.

That they will want to force every 3DS user to buy one. You think they are just going to port old Wii games?

You're delusional. They're just trying to keep the 3DS numbers from collapsing before they can get the new shit out. They'll never release a new, mainline Zelda game that's not for a flagship device.

Damn GAF, I'm surprised in most people's reactions here. I saw this new 3DS and got really excited...more buttons, better 3D...xenoblade on the go!? sign me the fuck up ASAP.

I mean, you can just sell your 3DS and use the money to buy the new one if anything. I don't see how this is a "slap in the face" at all.

Xenoblade is exclusive cause it can't run in og 3ds. The thought that this will hurt Nintendo is asinine.

This seems like a bad move.

Also the case of the small one looks like an iPhone.

That is exactly the point.

Now the question is whether to upgrade or hold out for the successor system. I do not play my 3DS much these days, but at the same time there are several new titles that interest me (Smash Brothers and Xenoblade).

Maybe the next handheld will be backwards compatible and it will not matter either way.

Btw I think DSi was a horrible name, much worse than New 3DS and DSi XL saved it because it actually sounded different and it was pretty obvious what was changed.

You need both systems present to do a system transfer. You could always seel it after the fact to reimburse yourself I suppose.

As much as Xenoblade gets me hype over this, I really hope it doesn't sell well enough to make the 3DS obsolete.

Unless if it's gonna be like with the DSi and just offer enhanced features for N3DS owners while being compatible with the "old" 3DS, which would be the best situation.

Fire the guy who thought New 3DS is a good name. Worse than WiiU in my opinion.

You're delusional. They're just trying to keep the 3DS numbers from collapsing before they can get the new shit out. They'll never release a new, mainline Zelda game that's not for a flagship device.

I'll remember you when Zelda: Majora's Mask Remix exclusive to New 3DS edition gets announced. :P

Prior handhelds like Gameboy Color and DSi were sold concurrently with their predecessors, right? If this is meant to replace the existing 3DS and at the same price point, what does that mean exactly?

I'll remember you when Zelda: Majora's Mask Remix exclusive to New 3DS edition gets announced. :P

Well that wouldn't be a new mainline title, would it? If we're talking about a MM port, I think it's feasible they could leave it on N3DS.

However, unlike Xenoblade there wouldn't be technical reasons for stranding it on the stop-gap system, so I could see it being a regular 3DS title as well.

I remember a couple years ago people in this very board bitching about waiting for a 3DS revision with the CPP built in and that they'd refuse to buy one until it existed.

Where are those people now?

complaining abot the tyranic practice of "splitting the userbase" or the 30 cents porn thing.

I have no issue with this. In this day and age I don't think there's any issue with having several models of the same hardware group. Apple and Samsung have the same, and not all software works on all of their models.

I just hope that the shell is made of a more sturdy material. The 3DS XL just feels a bit cheap.

And I hope I can just export all my games and play time stats over to the new 3DS.

Holy shit. Was about to pull the trigger on a 3DS or WiiU, looks like I'll hold off on a 3DS until this one comes out in NA, for now I'll go with a WiiU. So glad I saw this and didn't order last night in my drunken stupor.

I feel there would be a much larger shit storm if there was a major zelda, final fantasy release for the new 3DS that won't work on the old one.

Because Xenoblade might as well be a final fantasy game. And if you recently within the past year bought a 3ds or XL for Zelda:A link Between worlds or super smash bros coming in fall, then your out of luck on exclusive games only on the revisioned console.

And the amount to people who own 3DS is pretty big.

XL just came out in like 2012. So we are getting a revision that will play some exclusive games that wont work on current handhelds.

I see where the frustration would come from.

Looking at the photos again, good God those new 3DS' look delicious. The black and white ones with the famicom buttons are absolutely stunning. Dang.

If only the grey one had the famicom buttons, then it would be the most perfect handheld device ever.

I don't mind new models with new buttons or features... but at the point where you put a more powerful CPU in it and start porting large exclusives to it I feel you should just be releasing the successor (which would be a bigger upgrade than this ideally). This halfway attempt of a new model and partial new successor just makes me more reluctant to buy nintendo hardware in the future and will likely get me to just wait a few years to buy any sort of handheld successor from nintendo now since it will be likely that it will be replaced with a new model that has exclusive games for it a few years after launch :/.

Many of them were convinced to not wait for a revision and shelled out. Many of them are presumably happy customers. Others are probably quitter disappointed.

I'll remember you when Zelda: Majora's Mask Remix exclusive to New 3DS edition gets announced. :P

Majora's Mask will not be New 3DS exclusive. Zelda is one of the top sellers on the system (OoT3D is sixth I believe) and there's no technical reasons MM couldn't run on a normal 3DS because we already know OoT does.

System transfers should work as they did on the old 3ds' so you should be fine.

I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of them were very happy this is coming out, or are angry because they gave up then they went and did it. Unlike 4chan we CAN track who said what.

They probably are complaining about the 30 cents thing though because seriously that's kind of ridiculous. Could at least be forcing you to pay $1 in store credit or something, so you can prove you're an adult but not actually LOSE money so long as you intended to buy stuff there anyway.

That they will want to force every 3DS user to buy one. You think they are just going to port old Wii games?

Port Wii games and program in ways for games to run a bit better on the n3DS, sure? I really don't think there will be more than like...1 meaningful exclusive to this.
