Nintendo reveals the "New Nintendo 3DS" and "New Nintendo 3DS LL"

I disagree. Nintendo needs to sell hardware to keep its business going. If 3DS hardware sales are slowing down, which they are, this could be a huge boon to them, especially if any exclusive software is compelling enough for people who already own 3DS systems to want to upgrade.

I know I'll be getting this at launch at least. I think it's awesome.

It is for this year at least.

Oh well :P

They freaking added an exclusive shop to it, lol. Also, you're right, the market today is way more used to buy gadgets annually.

It has a CPU and RAM boost. It had over 400 exclusive titles. You may consider them "un-substantial", but it existed and you need to accept it.

Most titles will just be enhanced on this, just like the DS & DSi. Relax.

Xenoblade is exclusive cause it can't run in og 3ds. The thought that this will hurt Nintendo is asinine.

That is exactly the point.

I want to just tell you what I think of the situation. You guys can defend the decision all you'd like, IMO this is a huge misstep. If they wanted better hardware, launch an all new hardware platform.

The idea of this is to make Current 3ds owners double dip on the new hardware, with a platform struggling like the 3ds and on such a step decline, it's an awful decision. They should have just came out with something new. As it is now, I'll be skipping the new 3ds entirely and whatever handheld Nintendo releases next. Learned my lesson.

This is dumb.
Nintendo should have held back and pumped their resources into a 3DS successor. Tacking on significant input features this late into the game is a bad idea imo.

Majora's Mask will not be New 3DS exclusive. Zelda is one of the top sellers on the system (OoT3D is sixth I believe) and there's no technical reasons MM couldn't run on a normal 3DS because we already know OoT does.
But more exclusives force more of us to upgrade. You can't seriously tell us they they won't have more exclusives to force people's trigger finger.

Didn't MM require an expansion pack? So it technically needs more beef to run than OoT...But yeah MM should be able to run on the 3DS.

The whole "upload data to the PC" thing sounds like the most interesting feature. I assume that means we can backup our saves to the PC and not just the pictures that no one uses.

This is dumb.

I don't disagree.

also i get why they couldn't but the ONE thing the 3ds needs is a better resolution and they didn't even manage that

this would be akin to a phone thing if the hardware was way better. honestly I'll take this as an amiibo push until i see otherwise. og base is too big for crazy exclusives. I'm able to hold off on a port

I guess the people who want to preemptively sell their current 3DS XL models to put the money toward the new 3DS are screwed, huh?

Yeah, if it eventually comes I expect it to make a good use of the C-stick and extra buttons but not force you to upgrade.

I'm not defending anything, but this is just like when Nintendo released the DSi. It was actually a great business move, even though I was a bit salty that I couldn't access the eShop on my DS Lite (I never owned a DSi). You can never buy anything from Nintendo again if you please, but it's factually incorrect to act like this is a first for a Nintendo handheld.

Upon designing 3DS Sharp (LCD panel builder) guy revealed that they proposed Iwata with higher resolution screen and got rejected, so I'm sure Nintendo have stern philosophy behind keeping the resolution low, though I don't know what their intentions are.

Calling it now: Majora's Mask 3D is a New 3DS exclusive.

You know it will happen. No use fighting it.

I don't know why but I really do agree with you regarding Majora.

Why would they launch new hardware when they are still selling and developing 3ds games? That would be stupid. Their next handheld will probably be the hybrid that has been rumored so they can't launch that for a few years.

God, I still can't get over this. I am so, so hyped right now, the wait is killing me.

Haven't been this hyped since the original DSi, and the reminds me so much of it in all the right ways.

So fucking hyped!

GBC didn't really do that and neither did DSi. That isn't how Nintendo rolls, they tend to support their platforms more than anyone. They'd rather entice you - the extra buttons are for the MH audience and they know it - with enhanced features and keep their old market buying at the same time.

Yeah, if it eventually comes I expect it to make a good use of the C-stick and extra buttons but not force you to upgrade.

It'll control fine either way. OoT did.

im telling u expect 95% of retail games from here on out to be enhanced/standard 3ds carts. apart from a select 5%. which will be exclusive.

I remember a couple years ago people in this very board bitching about waiting for a 3DS revision with the CPP built in and that they'd refuse to buy one until it existed.

Where are those people now?

I caved and bought an XL when it came out. I'm not super upset because I love my 3DS, but if they were gonna do this I wish they'd done it a lot sooner.

Put me in the camp of this being a stopgap console and that Nintendo will gradually increase system specks similar to smartphones. The current 3DS will be phased out and this one will be the main console, and in 2-3 years this one will be phased out for a bigger upgrade.

As if yet another 3DS revision will stop the yearly decrease in sales.

Does the smaller model have an improved battery life?

I actually don't like my current XL. It's too big... but the current "small" 3DS has atrocious battery life.

Nintendo will repeat history.

Majora's Mask needed an expansion pack. Now MM3D will need the revised system.

So is the Smash Bros LE 3DS XL definitely not the new model? It says "New something something 3DS" underneath it so I'm not sure.

Day one!

Pour that Xenoblade and second analog nub goodness all over me

I see exactly what Nintendo is doing with this proposition. Squeeze the hardcore playerbase for some extra revenue while 3DS sales continue to stagnate.

I still can't help but be excited, especially if it releases alongside Xenoblade. To be honest, many of these features, especially the extra stick, should have been available day one.

Just be prepared to eat it yourself :P

There is a 100% chance someone will be eating crow that day.

MM uses the ram expansion pack, and the Zelda collection on GameCube has trouble with it

I'm just excited to get one and think this is a smart business move.

I honestly don't see why releasing a new platform separate from the 3DS would be any more acceptable or be less about forcing current 3DS owners to buy new hardware.

Like I said, 3DS sales have slowed down. By releasing a more powerful version with more functions and buttons, they will attract some people who have yet to purchase a 3DS. They will also get some people to upgrade.

I really cannot see how they lose in this situation. Are people who like the 3DS platform going to be so angered by a new $160~$180 option that has very few exclusive games that they will just forsake Nintendo forever?

I think that is highly unlikely.
