Nintendo reveals the "New Nintendo 3DS" and "New Nintendo 3DS LL"

I've gotten more hyped about this the more I think about it. The upgraded specs of the New 3DS could open the way for GBA/SNES eShop releases on the system. More N64/Wii ports could hit the system as well. This...gets me excited. =D

Could we see Mario Galaxy on N3DS?

i can't wait until some poor fuck gets a 3ds for xmas with xenoblade but he can't play it because his new 3ds isn't a "new 3ds"

name is so bad. i guess they're gonna add another nub to a "new 3ds" cartridge

Since it's the same price, it's likely going to phase out the old 3DS which should lessen the chance of this happening.

Who is this for?

A tiny second analog stick, more buttons and 2-3x boosts in RAM and CPU performance don't sound convincing enough to either compel large numbers of holdouts to jump in or spur a second wave of resales. The Old XL's larger screen and form factor offered a much more immediate, obvious improvement over it's predecessor. I just don't get it.
Me. I never made the move to XL due to its 3D view angles inferiority. But I think I'll stay with the smaller form factor again, as the 3DSi addresses everything I wanted addressed:

1. cart slot on the front, where I won't accidentally trigger-press the cart and eject it mid-game.
2. just a tad larger screen - playing DS games in 1:1 mapping was a tad tiny.
3. clamshell won't scratch the screen anymore (the pads are in the right positions)
4. the aesthetically-questionalble bevel on the sides of the top part is gone, and the design seems overall thinner.
5. last but not least, a larger battery

Can't you deactivate the NNID on that 3DS then activate it on another one? I thought that's how it worked on Wii U at least, and there are only issues if you don't have access to the system to deactivate it.

You still have to call Nintendo to convince them to put all the licenses on the new system. You can log into Nintendo network but it will act like you never bought the games.

An unexpected announcement, my 3DS does feel sluggish at times, so an upgrade to performance will help a lot. Not sure I would rush out to buy a new one though.

The costs are likely identical for Nintendo (the price between 128MB and 256MB chips, etc are likely the same at this point), and this model will almost certain phase out the old design fairly quickly. It's just a way to clear out the old and then offer a slightly updated model (with almost no cost to themselves) while also getting a few double/triple dippers.

The fact that Nintendo hasn't produced regular version 3DS for awhile seems to go with that IMO.

I'd be more willing to believe that if it weren't for the spec boost and having titles like Xenoblade run on the New line exclusively. It suggests a far more aggressive desire to spur double and triple dipping by transitioning away from the old line entirely, forcing people to buy (or rebuy) the New line to get new first party titles without having to make an actual new platform from scratch.

But that's just random speculation on my part. :p

They really need to get their shit together when it comes to system/game transfers if they wont to go this route permanently.

Glad that I held back on getting any Nintendo 3DS XL model. I am definitely getting this when it comes out in the US, though I will probably trade in my old 3DS to get it cheaper or something. Hope it is coming early next year and not being a Fall 2015 release.

It's been two years since I've had my XL (and that was *almost* two years since my OG), so I don't mind an optional upgrade.

I upgrade my phone every two years for some reason and the extra power there is pretty much useless, at least I'll get something out of this.

Better yet , digital DS releases that can take advantage of the 3DS system features like Miiverse.

My big concern is the name. The jump isn't big enough to call it "SUPER" but I feel "NEW" could be problematic in many English Speaking countries :/

Otherwise this seems like a standard DSi/GBC upgrade and I might be tempted to upgrade. Still going to have to learn a bit more about the product and wait for impressions.

What I most don't understand about this New 3DS, is why Nintendo would deal with market fragmentation for such minor upgrades. I'd think they would want to make more significant improvements that they could market effectively.

Don't get me wrong, I'm going to buy one, but I'm a consumer whore.

Man, imagine Timmy's Christmas when he opens up a brand new New 3DS game that his grandparents bought him, but he's only got a regular 3DS. Imagine the furor when the parents find out they can't return the game b/c they opened it and tried to play it on the wrong system.

Are New 3DS cartridges going to have some sort of different shape so they can't be inserted into an old 3DS?

Now this is a real concern. Unlike the DSi, NEW3DS comes with a high profile game and there will be exclusive content for it. Nintendo has shown support for it and it has already garnered enough interest for people to buy it. There will be the bolded cases happening very often with how Nintendo names things.

Now it is on Nintendo to solve their fragmentation problem.

I'm still getting one:) Xenoblade and Mohun are irresistible.

I think I would have liked the name super 3ds better. A nice throwback to snes

I likely will get one eventually if there are enough exclusives to force my hand but I emphasize the word force. This makes zero sense from a consumer standpoint and seems like a strategy designed to juice more profits from Nintendo fans.

Thinking about this more, it just seems like really really risky move with the already somewhat fragile dedicated handheld market. The 3DS isn't as big as the DS for a reason.

They're almost certainly going to fuck up the naming and marketing too. It's a sad reality.

This whole thing comes across as half-assed. Then again, Nintendo tried this once already so I'm not too terribly surprised. I want to be proven wrong though, and I hope Nintendo can deliver some new experiences with this thing.

Not selling my Zelda 3DS or buying another one cause of this. Fuck having to purchase redesigned hardware just to play new games that are coming out. Why isn't this a brand new system? So confusing. And no, other hardware revisions were not like this, they just improved on design and display. Game Boy Color was an entirely separate line that came out 9 years after the original system.

Because their new system will be coming in 2-3 years.

You're applying PC logic to a console, essentially. These games DO NOT vary unless they're programmed to, and in the case of PC they're almost all that way (those that aren't either usually can be modded that way, or are 2D games so it's irrelevant.) This might be something to hope for with New 3DS compatible games, and maybe we'll get lucky and Nintendo will issue patches however they can to get old 3DS games to run/look better, but console games don't just inherently "look better" with stronger hardware and Nintendo's historically been a pain about updating games. The Wii and DS had no such support, and while the Wii U seems reasonably good the 3DS patches seem more like a hacked in solution most of the time.

Even with console games, assets are usually produced at a higher resolution than the target. Many PS3 games ran sub-1080p and in some cases sub-720p but things like textures were much higher resolution. I don't expect Nintendo to do it though, just saying it's possible.

I don't understand why this isn't coming out this year in the West. Nintendo is torpedoing their own hardware sales this holiday season.

Aside from the obvious modifications they have made, I like that they moved the volume control up to be opposite the 3D slider as that gives it a more balanced look, and I like the vertical charging station. Moving the power button and mic to the front edge is interesting, and loading carts now from the front is also interesting.

I kind of liked having the start and select button on either side of the home button the way that it is now on the XL as it just seems "cleaner", but that's about the only nitpick that I can find for me. But overall, shut up and take my money!

Man this is really tempting, but it sucks that its microSD only. Also I have a strange feeling that if I buy one in 2015, the actual 3DS successor will be released in 2016.

I was hoping that next 3ds would have work also WiiU's controller. Then I could finally buy both, because wiiu without the controller is almost free.

For the love of money and staying in business, find a better name before releasing another piece of hardware with a self-destructively bad one, Nintendo.

Wish there was a way to set up my account for transfer before buying the new hardware so I could sell the old system to put the money towards the New 3ds. Their current structure for accounts is a massive disincentive to upgrade for me.

For what's worth on the subject of 3DS trade-in offers: while Nintendo's account locking is bad, I've found that some Gamestops will allow in-store system transfer after they inspect the old 3DS. Ask the manager. If there's wifi active in the area this makes it easy. You can also use a cell phone tether for a few minutes of wifi.

It's stupid, you shouldn't have to worry about it, but it's possible to get a trade-in done without losing your licenses.

I'm almost tempted to get the regular-sized one this time around. I love my XL, but mostly because of the matte. I'd have to try it out for a while before deciding.

Man, I hope we get some hands on impressions sooner rather than later. I just want to know how that c stick feels and how the improved 3d viewing angle is.

I don't get why so many people are salty about this upgrade and it 'fragmenting' the user base. Nintendo has done this with their other handhelds. GB to GBC, GBA to GBA SP, and DS to DSi- all of them vastly improved the original system designs.

The GBA to GBA SP did not fragment the market, but it was a big improvement on the original- rechargeable battery, a backlit screen, and a completely new form factor. If you tried an SP when you just had a normal GBA, going back to that was almost unbearable.

They always do at least one big revision that makes a bunch of changes to the handheld. History repeats itself, why is everybody so surprised?

wow looks cool, want one.

but isnt the hardware is pretty dated now?

Ive only played 3DS in shops a few times, how does the visuals stack up against new phones/ vita these days?

Fuck it. If people adopted the name xbone they can adopt 4DS. I'm starting the trend. It's much easier then New 3DS and it's the fourth iteration of a 3DS.

There are some nice additions to these, such as the improved 3D zone and the new C-stick, but the exclusive software worries me.

I can't see your typical person going out and buying the New 3DS just to play a game if they've already got an original 3DS / XL. Not to mention the confusion for people who don't realize you'd need the"New" 3DS to play "New" 3DS games.

No, not a new 3DS game, a "New" 3DS game.
