Wario is the biggest disappointment because his roots are very much tied with the world of handhelds. Created for Mario Land 2, Wario Land series started on GameBoy and Wario Ware started on GameBoy Advance. Wii U better deliver in regards to him.

Yeah I don't think Wario is changing much judging by that Trophy.

I agree about the stage selection too.
I guess most of the effort is in the Wii U version, at least I hope so.
There is still some very nice stage for the 3DS, it's just the lack of new ones in certain IP.

It would be great if the Wii U doubled down on stages. I figure - assuming no characters are locked away until the Wii U release - stages are what's left for the big reveals. It will be hard to maintain hype for the Wii version the way we have with characters so far. So I'm hoping they're really loading the Wii U with content.

What's the stage to the right of battlefield?

I just find it sad that the 3DS version has less stages than Brawl..

34 stages (24 new, 10 past) against 41 from Brawl (31 new, 10 past)

I still think the Wii U is what is going to deliver, and the 3DS one, while fantastic, is just bite-sized-smash.

Stages have always been the weakest part of smash bros. They're just always disappointing for some reason.

Given how much attention there is for Smash Run in the 3DS version as well as the streetpass games, I'd imagine there'd have to be some comparable effort on exclusive modes for the Wii U version, right? Or maybe all the effort went into HD development, who knows. The resounding silence about the Wii U version is troubling.

Shadow Moses was well executed. Fire Emblem felt generic, at least in my opinion.

The transitions in that Fire Emblem stage were so jarring.

I don't know who thought fighting in the middle of a white screen was an ok way to move between sections.

Melee still had my favorite stages. Really specific locations from games. Fountain of Dreams, Zebes and Brinstar, Corneria and Venom, Onett and Fourside, etc. These are the kinds of stages I would come up with as a fan. Seeing my favorite locations realized in Smash. Not to mention there was a really healthy representation of franchises. Many got more than one stage.

Now it's more like the stages are supposed to represent the feel of an entire game. WarioWare, Nintendogs, Super Mario Bros U, Super Mario 3D Land, Wii Fit, Mario Galaxy, and so on.

Melee stages were locations. Brawl and Smash 4 stages are just games.

Yeah, I personally always just stuck with the basic stages like FD and Battlefield, so I'm not really too bothered by the stages in the 3DS version. Though, I agree that in terms of representation it's pretty damn shitty.

I'm just glad my favorite Melee and Brawl stage are in the 3DS version, at least. (Corneria and Warioware Inc, respectively.)

EDIT: Hold on, you're telling me there's only one kirby stage and it's a Gameboy stage? I find that hard to believe.

I actually liked the stage transition.
Though I appreciated project M ignoring the middle stage which was the worst.
Main reason I liked it though was the Fire Emblem theme playing. Always gets me pumped for some Smash.

Brawl only had one new Kirby stage too.

One *new* one. I'm just shocked we didn't get green greens, fountain of dreams, or any old kirby stages at least. Or anything from the past couple of handheld exclusive kirby games. It just seems weird that the only one we'd get would be a gameboy one.

Do we know if those are all the stages?

Its strange that the last row is not centered, and there is an unused space after random.. :p

I wonder if the black hole glitch will return. The original in Melee was brutally powerful, the Brawl version was less powerful but still packed quite a punch.

I remember way back in like 2005 I went to a Melee tournament where they said that the "Black Hole Glitch" was banned and I was just like what

Holy shit they are. All of them are in the top 20 video game best sellers.

I think these things and DLC for their major titles (Kart, Smash) are going to make Nintendo a lot of money. The hardcore Nintendo fanbase has been waiting for this shit.

I'm telling ya. it's a win win.

A non-crazy Miiverse comment posted here? What madness is this?!

I don't even blame the kid for calling it brawl.
Hell a lot of times I want to call it brawl even in here.
Just like im sure some melee fans sometimes refer to it as well.
I always thought of the subtitle before anything else.

It's entirely possible that nostalgia has a lot to do with it, but I always liked the stage layouts in the original Smash Bros as much if not moreso than anything else the series has done since. The original Peach's Castle with those angled walls, Hyrule Castle was long but had some nice changes in geometry...A lot of them obviously feel more simplistic in approach than more recent stages, but I liked it that way. There are too many now with needless background transitions and crazy crap happening, and while those can be fun nods to the games they're inspired by I think it kind of hurts the focus that should be on the actual fighting.

Smash 64 stages were the best since they were pretty back, and some had interesting platform arrangements.

One of my bigger problems with Smash 4 stages (outside no hazard/boss toggle) is that there are a bit much on the "floating platforms while the interesting geometry is in the background" gimmick. In this case, I'm talking about the Galaxy stage were the places I actually want to fight on, the Observatory, Planet Mario and a Battleship, were in the background while I fight on the surface of a generic planet (I know that it's the tutorial planet but still), and Willy's Castle, WHERE THE BLOODY CASTLE IS IN THE BACKGROUND AND I WANT TO FIGHT THERE.

That, and just way too many gimmicks stages. Sometimes, a Battlefield with a different platform layout is fun enough.

That's why I like the 64/Melee Great Fox, even with the shooting ships which are easy enough to ignore. Glad it's back.

I'd probably agree. I think melee still has enough "normal" stages for me to pick that as my favourite stage list, but even it had some stages I immediately got sick of (Ice Climbers).
