Super Smash Bros. for 3DS & Wii U Thread 14: Snake... had a hard life

I might have griped a bit about this, but Smash 4 has some crappy unlockable characters :v (relative to what were the unlockables of past games). I'm just... eh. The unlockables count drops from Brawl to Smash 4, fewer unlockable newcomers (only two are fully unique newcomers!), Wario relegated to unlockable status for no reason. Honestly, it's enough to make a man hope to no end that they finish off the unlockable roster with at least a Rhythm Heaven character... maybe Ridley? Dixie Kong? Eh?

You're assuming the leak had everyone unlocked.

Wolf, Lucas, Ice Climbers, Chorus Kids, Mewtwo. BELIEVE!

They porbalby changed their tune from Brawl where people might have complained that Snake was a huge reveal, yet you couldn't play as him from the get-go, wtf.

Brawl did this too, and I hated it so much. A lot of the newcomers were ready out of the box, which was alright, but leaving only veterans unlocked removed a lot of the excitement of unlocking new people.

Maybe Melee was different because I went into it not knowing who was unlockable and just worked my way through it.

It makes sense from a marketing perspective, though. Market the newer characters before release who will bring more hype, in theory.

Would an embargo based on what journalists have seen at PAX prevent them from reporting any further leaks? It might not have been such a bad idea then seeing as the leaks are less likely to leave internet communities then.

Unless journalists aren't allowed to report on leaks in the first place or something?

I'm just so peeved though that Sakurai is content w/ pushing Wario into the unlockables section for no reason, and then replacing him with Luigi. Honestly, Lucario and Toon Link not only could be unlockables in place of Wario and Ness, but should be unlockables. Even if Wario and Ness were unlockables still. ¦x

Wait, do we even know the starter roster to confirm who's unlockable?

No, we're basically just operating on the idea that the one shown on the Japanese eShop is the starting roster. It would make sense - 64 had 8, Melee had 15, Brawl had 25, and (if the image is correct) 36 for Smash 4. A starter growth of 7-11 isn't too wide. The only issue I have is that the growth of 4 to 11 to 14 is ended by Smash 4's 12. I suppose it's entirely possible that they had the third-party characters on-screen just for advertisement's sake, and they end up being unlockable...

EDIT: Sah, you could have just said that you assume 5% of US players may end up not buying the game at all. :P

There's a CSS pic on the Japanese eShop page. Yet another glorious advantage of having a Japanese 3DS. It has all currently announced characters minus Lucina. Many assume it's the starting roster, but maybe they are just showing as many characters as possible for promo purposes.

Personally I don't like it that Luigi and Captain Falcon are on the starting roster. They should be hidden characters for tradition's sake. Also Marth kind of weaseled is way into the starting roster as well.

It really is annoying how inconsistent they are with starters and unlockables.

Ice Climbers are going to be the only cut character that's been a starter in more than one game right?

I agree with some of that. From my perspective, I would like this to be the unlockable roster (of what we know):

Bowser Jr.
Dr. Mario
Jigglypuff
Lucario
Ganondorf
Toon Link
Marth
Lucina
Dark Pit
Falco
Captain Falcon
Ness
Duck Hunt
Mr. Game & Watch
R.O.B.

I don't mind so much that Ness and C.F. are unlockable, because they're pretty niche these days. As for Luigi, he's definitely coming into his own and honestly deserves to shine.

...good point. Just never paid attention to how obvious that is lol.
I'm not expecting this to turn into DoA Nintendo Edition, but some beefcake never hurt nobody.

I just hope we get some from a character other that Shulk, who looks like he has a severe protein deficiency.

Can't wait for playable Metal Face. If he was a boss they'd outright say so, just teasing his shadow must mean something more.

;)

Yeah... I'm sure people and fans everywhere have been wanting one more representative of Xenoblade, specifically Metal Face, since the intro from Melee :P

I believed in Ridley being an unlockable in Melee for so long as a kid, I thought for sure there was a way or a specific button input you had to press when he showed up on the intro because I couldn't figure out how else to do it.

When they showed Melee, with that intro maaaaany years ago, the scene with Ridley made everyone stand up and cheer. They expected that meant he was in. He wasn't. Wasn't in brawl either. Probably not even here.

People want him. Like, REALLY want him, Metroid fans. If he doesn't make it I won't understand Sakurai at all.

For Sakurai, nothing is as nutritious and refreshing as the tears of children.

Is anybody else worried that the soundtrack is going to be quantity over quality like how it was in Brawl? Overall, Melee is the better sounding game. Don't deny it.

"Better sounding" in that fully orchestrated music is awesome? Yes, I agree. But Brawl had some really stellar synthesized arrangements--for example (but not limited to):
Michiko Naruke's OoT Medley and Stickerbrush Symphony, Shogo Sakai's Theme of Love, Noriyuki Iwadare's With Mila's Divine Protection, and so forth. I dig all the arrangements I've heard this far for Smash 4, so I'd say it's safe to get our hopes up :)

So what would everyone think if this was the DLC

Isabelle
Ridley
Chorus Kids
Impa
Dixie Kong
Mewtwo
Lucas
Wolf
Ice Climbers
Great Tiger

Lucas? Check.
Chorus Kids? Check.
Yep, this would be perfect.

Yeah if there's anything good about Brawls music, it's that you can get rid of all the shit you don't want to listen to.

It's just a shame that you can save settings on Dolphin PM netplay so I can't really get rid of the songs I don't like.

I just ranked my favourite stages, and

9/10 of my worst stages are from Brawl, lol.

This is accounting for both enjoyment from casual play and competitive play.

Rumble Falls (Brawl)
WarioWare, Inc. (Brawl)
Spear Pillar (Brawl)
Norfair (Brawl)
Mushroomy Kingdom (Brawl)
Hanenbow (Brawl)
75m (Brawl)
Icicle Mountain (Melee)
Mario Bros. (Brawl)
New Pork City (Brawl)

I think all of those are pretty crap :v

My analysis of legitimately bad Smash stages:

64: No stage I consider outright bad.

Melee: "eh" stages? Sure, I didn't particularly enjoy icicle mountain, G&W or Jungle Japes but in hindsight I was also really really bad at the game back then.

Icicile mountain going downwards + speeding up was pretty horrible though.

Brawl: eugh...

I want to say Brawl has 3 or 4 major issues that combine to some degree in
it's plethora of awful stages.

1. Dull muted colors in colorful game series (why?)

2. "building block" stages that look like they're made in stage editor.
(Throwing some blocks in front of a background looks lazy and I hate it)

3. Absolutely nonsensical stage layouts. (why do people generally love temple and loathe New Pork?)

4. Awful or tedious hazard placement. (looking at you 75M & Rumble Falls.)

5. Atricious "Effects" like making an extremely floaty game even floatier.

One or two of these I can be okay with, but there's a shameful number of stages that just grabbed a full hand of horrible traits and slapped them together.

But Donkey Kong...he's my dude. My best friend. I try to regularly re-play the DKC series whenever I can find the time, and it never lets me down. That Sakurai is flat out ignoring it basically this time around, literally giving it NOTHING new except some glorified cameos in Smash Run, just upsets me, and I wouldn't be surprised if it's just because he sees it as inferior because it was made by western developers just like how Miyamoto apparently threw a hissy-fit about it.

The main issue is likely that Returns just had Donkey & Diddy anyway. In that sense, it'd seem like Smash was already representing the series fairly well.

Tropical Freeze is too recent, and it underperformed anyway. The only way it could have any representation is if they coordinated things from the start, like it's done with the Pokemon Company for Pokemon representation. But most series in Smash don't get that benefit anyway, it's not only Donkey Kong that's left out.

And if the next FE game continues to follow the exploits of Chrom, Robin, Lucina, & the other Shepherds (which is likely considering how big of a hit Awakening was)?

The main issue is that to do that they'd pretty much need to cut what made Awakening popular in the first place. You couldn't make an Awakening direct sequel with the same cast and still have free pairings. Awakening's formula pretty much makes a new cast for the next game required if they want to stick with it.

Exactly. I can't enjoy WarioWare because I just want a fun stage to battle on, not play mini-games. The worst part is that it's boring to look at most of the time. They could have given us an actual setting from WarioWare (I know that the elevator is a setting, but I'm talking something like outside of WarioWare, Inc. w/ a ton of different WarioWare cameos roaming about and doing their thing). That would be significantly more visually interesting - a stage shouldn't need to distract you from the primary gameplay to be good.

I can't really read the kanji right below the pics, but is it saying something to the extent of "over 40 fighters"? That would kind of confirm that 49 is the final number.
Yeah it pretty much says "more than 40 fighters in this latest installment" or something.

I'm honestly okay with WarioWare, though I do agree that it'd be nice for every franchise to have at least one "neutral" stage per franchise. (very happy with the FD-mode addition due to that)

I do think the extremely high number of gimmick stages makes the outright awful stages harder to ignore.

I'd probably enjoy Warioware, pictochat etc a lot more if they were the extremes
in a fairly neutral stage roster. But they're not, they're far closer to the middle in Brawl.
