Super Smash Bros. for 3DS & Wii U Thread 14: Snake... had a hard life

Ike just turned 19

Also as for 40+, I've mostly resigned myself to "roster is only 49", but I accept the argument that saying 50 or 50+ gives too much away. At the same time though, if it was indeed at 50 or above, it would make the game that much more appealing if it was identified as being that large.

After seeing the 40+ ads, I feel like we've seen the full roster for 3DS at this point. However, I fully expect sakurai to add another 3-5 characters for the Wii U release which will be free DLC for 3DS. It explains why the Wii U version was delayed, and gives a good reason for people to still be hyped after 3DS.

Simply because of the trophy theory and the ease of cloning, I feel Dixie and Impa are the most likely newcomers to still come if 3ds has more characters in store. I always thought Impa would replace shiek in the brawl iteration anyway.

Can someone provide any info on when development for Smash 3DS finished? I want to get an idea of how much time between that time and Smash Wii U's release there is for Sakurai to even be making more characters.

Regarding the 40+ character adds, if we count the Mii Fighters separately, the new Smash currently has exactly 40 characters revealed. So, 40+ is just saying that there are unrevealed unlockables.

EDIT: As far as Brawl OST vs. Melee OST, Brawl probably edges it out in overall quality... but so much of the songs are either duds, or songs I never listen to. There are so few songs in Melee that I have that kind of issue. As someone else also commented, the lack of any true orchestration really ruined a lot of songs, while Melee's smaller OST used brilliant orchestration. It's why Melee also has the better trophies than Brawl.

I really don't think Melee had many orchestral songs either. Some of the Melee bgm in Brawl sounds slightly different (like the Mario 3 remix, with different balance between the instruments), which means that they were synth all along.

My analysis of legitimately bad Smash stages:

64: No stage I consider outright bad.

Melee: "eh" stages? Sure, I didn't particularly enjoy icicle mountain, G&W or Jungle Japes but in hindsight I was also really really bad at the game back then.

Icicile mountain going downwards + speeding up was pretty horrible though.

Brawl: eugh...

I want to say Brawl has 3 or 4 major issues that combine to some degree in
it's plethora of awful stages.

1. Dull muted colors in colorful game series (why?)

2. "building block" stages that look like they're made in stage editor.
(Throwing some blocks in front of a background looks lazy and I hate it)

3. Absolutely nonsensical stage layouts. (why do people generally love temple and loathe New Pork?)

4. Awful or tedious hazard placement. (looking at you 75M & Rumble Falls.)

5. Atricious "Effects" like making an extremely floaty game even floatier.

One or two of these I can be okay with, but there's a shameful number of stages that just grabbed a full hand of horrible traits and slapped them together.

Exactly what I thought, I missed a lot of melee stages because the ones that promised most (75M, Super Mario Bros) ended up being... not good.

I read somewhere that Sakurai said Poke floats was too crazy.. Well, it was, but it was better designed and fun, unlike lots of these.

For me the worst stage is the electroplankton one, it removed all the fun fighting there.

Fixed.

If Impa is here, then ridley is here too, that's how work the trophy theory lol.

Does anybody know the deal with that 19 at the down left corner and Ike?

I'm pretty sure it's a "find all the characters" thing. The one I took had Mii Gunner, the number 40, and Shinjuku Station marked in the bottom left.

When they showed Melee, with that intro maaaaany years ago, the scene with Ridley made everyone stand up and cheer. They expected that meant he was in. He wasn't. Wasn't in brawl either. Probably not even here.

People want him. Like, REALLY want him, Metroid fans. If he doesn't make it I won't understand Sakurai at all.

Yeah, you can hear people go crazy at the 0:44 mark in this video.

It's also worth noting that he's even roughly the same size as Samus, so that's not an issue.

The issue isn't about stages being too far out or extreme imho.

Like, I've barely ever heard anyone complain about Norfair, that stage's hazard literally covers the entire visible playing area.

Pretty much all stages that are absolutely hated by many share the same basic problem: horrible horrible base lay-out.

75M? Shit layout.
Hanenboy? Shit layout. (especially as the fight progresses.)
New Pork? Shit Layout.
Mushroomy Kingdom? lol..

Smash 64 had the best designs.

Peach's castle, Saffron city and Hyrule castle were all awesome. Corneria, Jungle japes and Yoshi's story were pretty good too. I don't even remember the names of most of the melee/brawl stages.

What about PictoChat? Great idea, terrible execution it would have been so much better if they allowed you to drop down the doodles instead of them forming impenetrable wall.

Speaking of which, is the 3DS Pictochat a new version? I'm sure I've not seen the drawing in the icon in Brawl before.

Hm... doesn't that pretty much prove that the Mii Fighters are counted individually? So, we're at 50+ characters with the leak.

I can't really read the kanji right below the pics, but is it saying something to the extent of "over 40 fighters"? That would kind of confirm that 49 is the final number.

Yeah it pretty much says "more than 40 fighters in this latest installment" or something.

50+ also is more than 40. And we already have over 50 characters on the roster (48 named characters with 3 Mii Fighters). If they said "over 50", then it would be very specific because it's likely not much more than 50 anyway, might as well give the actual number. Even if there is still hidden characters that we don't know about.

Hmm... if Mii Fighters are being counted individually, then the roster is indeed 50+. Though, what if Mii Gunner is just the representative for the Mii Fighters here? Have we seen Mii Swordfighter or Brawler with their own numbers yet?

Sakurai said that he sees characters with multiple forms as individual roster spot since Brawl - he counted the Pokemon Trainer as 3 rather than 1 character, Sheik/Zelda and Samus/Zamus as 2 rather than 1 as well.
Mii Fighters obviously are 3 characters even more so than the transformation characters since they are not linked and never were.

They all have different movesets, as well.

To reiterate, it pretty much says:

40を超えるファイターが集結!

いっでもどこでも大乱闘!!

"More than 40 gathered fighters!

Brawl anywhere on-the-go!!"

Nice advertising, anyway. It doesn't say anything we already don't know.

I think they would count Miis individually to make the roster looks bigger.. Those are marketing material after all :p

At which point, we would need to wonder how many more characters we will have. We have 51, which could fall under the territory of 50+; at what point would you say 40+ would no longer apply?

worst roster confirmed

the dream is dead

smash had a good run

Why do you always write Shiek? Isn't it Sheik?

And Impa replacing Sheik would be understandable, but now that sheik is in, what is Impa? Sheik's clone?

If they used Hyrule Warriors Impa (which i doubt, Smash was in development before that game) it would just be a Greninja + Ike character, but Skyward Sword iteration... doesn't quite fit imo

How do games normally deal with secret character numbers? 40+ give a correct number (50+ is more than 40 after all) while not giving away the final character count.

I'm not sure. The official website lists nearly 40 characters, it's not that far off, and the Japanese eShop has a characters selection of 38(?) characters. 40+ sounds better than 38+, in my opinion. I don't think they'd want to give away 50+ characters if those include unlockables.

Just to be safe, I'm expecting 49. I have a high threshold for disappointment, but the odds are too stacked up for me to go in expectant of more without being waaay too disappointed if nothing comes of it. Really pulling for Sakurai to surprise us all with at least a Rhythm Heaven character, though!

I go to Ikebukuro Station everyday on my commute. I wonder which posters are there.

Nothing but Youkai Watch here in Nerima. :(

The Gunner being 40 pretty much means they must be counted individually though. There are only 40 revealed characters right now (counting the Mii Fighters separately) - they wouldn't reach 40 without the Miis being separate.

I think Smash is one of the rare games nowadays that still hides characters before launch, especially such large numbers...

Considering there are 40 officially known characters right now, I'm pretty sure that's why they used the "over 40" tagline. (To indicate more coming.)

Saying "over 50" when we're 10 characters shy of that would be giving too much away. Plus, if the final toll was 49, "over 40" would be a really odd way to advertise that. (Over 45 would seem more likely.)

We already know about 49 characters, counting all Miis as one.

If its the final roster, we already have to play classic + all star 98 times just to beat it in one intensity setting

Well, if the roster is indeed being treated with everyone individually, then we definitely have 51 characters. I'm starting to lean towards the idea that 40+ is a tease of something more to come. If there is indeed more than 51 characters, it would explain why the unlockable roster is relatively small to Brawl's.
