Is Mainstream Hatred Of Anime Growing?

What I know, is that my PC froze and crashed, when i opened this thread.

So even though i didn't hate anime before, i do now!

Anyway the GB people like Wrestling and Videogames, you can't take them too seriously, when they say they don't like Anime.

As someone who has watched a lot of the bloody things (nearly 300 completed according to mal) I find myself less willing to give the annoying tropes of anime as I've grown older. Looking through the ratings I've given them, I really should drop some down. Fan service is cringe worthy and instantly drops the show several points. I'm not saying all anime is this but a lot of it is (because fuck weeaboos). It's just irritating and so prevalent that I can't fault people for being turned away after seeing it. Seriously, do a google image search, fucking weeaboos.

Combined with seen one group of teenagers kill god, seen them all. I guess as there's so much released every year certain tropes are going to repeat but that doesn't make it any more bearable. The truly unique (good) shows are pretty far inbetween.

In context to the GiantBombCast it's pretty good comparison. Metal Gear Solid is inspired by anime for better or worse (mostly worse). It's also been well documented Jeff's hatred of the medium. He's not writing an article to convince people, just an off reference for comedic value.

sidenote: wtf happened to mal? half the shows have OVER 9000 episodes.

I haven't been interested in anime in years, although I was big on dragonball/dragon ball z/sailor moon/digimon seasons 1 and 3/cowboy bebop and lupin the third.

I have to admit that I am very interested in the new sailor moon show and the new digimon season sounds right up my alley.

Anime has been shit for a long time and it's either more of the same or becoming incredibly immature.

A show like Naruto or Bleach had the potential to be amazing but it just dragged on and on. And then there's the onslaught of weird moe pedo shit.

This is the embodiment of every uninformed opinion of anime.

I don't take their opinion of it seriously, people have a right to not like things and I'm not going to stop enjoying something because the person doing it doesn't share a single interest with me, I just think for the sake of the site as a whole they should get some people in there with different interests and opinions.

Huh...so this is what define mainstream kind of thinking.

People hate on highly sexualized female character design (and rightfully so, most of the time), but don't bat an eye at glorified murder in Hollywood films and other media. I don't care for a lot of mainstream anime, but I'm not dismissive of the medium as a whole. That's irrational and childish.

I haven't been interested in anime in years, although I was big on dragonball/dragon ball z/sailor moon/digimon seasons 1 and 3/cowboy bebop and lupin the third.

I'm in (mostly) the same boat. Despite trying a bunch of series, I feel I've only found 4 or 5 anime series really enjoyable in the past... 10 years?

"Seinfeld" Tier
Gurren Lagann
Space Dandy (from creator of Cowboy Bebop, on Hulu)
Legend of Galactic Heroes (older series, but among the best space opera I've ever consumed)
Honey and Clover (beautiful story of students maturing together, think Haruki Murakami in anime)

For comedy (may be hit or miss)
Shinchan (the dubbed version)
Sgt. Frog

A much longer list of shows start with great potential but ultimately putter out -- either it becomes clear the creator has little clue what they are doing and just making it up as they go (Attack on Titan, Bleach, One Piece) or show takes a huge nose dive (Sword Art Online). Of course, there were also a bunch of "decent" shows that are borderline enjoyable, akin to later seasons of How I met your mother. Nothing worth recommending, but not terrible.

I think maybe when anime became popular in the late 90s / early 2000s, there was a great backlog to draw from and toonami did a great job of curating that list. But they can only air Cowboy Bebop so many times, and so the next generation got less exposure to it. I think American cartoons also improved in quality a bit (Adventure Time, Avatar: The Last Airbender comes to mind).

So now it's primarily consumed and discussed online, which is a recipe for offline marginalization. I definitely remember kids on the bus talking about yesterday's Dragonball Z. The anonymity that the internet grants is a double edged sword as it frees individuals to make fun of those cultures without feeling like they are actually hurting anyone. Then again, I can't really stand most recent anime or the culture surrounding it.

edit: to be clear, I still enjoy "animation" in general. I like the medium and the creativity it allows. I enjoyed Avatar: The Last Airbender/Adventure Time, watch the Oscar Nominated Shorts every year, browse shortoftheweek.com, etc. It's primarily Japanese mainstream animation that I feel less attachment to.

People hate on highly sexualized female character design (and not necessarily wrongfully so).

I don't think there's anything remotely wrong with sexualized female characters. It's with how uneven it is. I want more sexualization, but I don't want it to be just women, I want every series with big bouncing titties to have Free! guys too. I want the sexualization to be equal in terms of ridiculousness.

I can't argue with this position.

This moe and japanese obsession with harem and schools is ruining it. I like anime, but not that type. I'll sit down and watch Hunter x Hunter or Fate Zero... or Attack on Titan.. or Gurren... or any of those shows that actually avoid the moe/cutegirl crap.

Did you just...conveniently ignored crappy guro and over-violent OVA from 90's era? Like anyone said, it's all about the information access, internet makes it easier for us to see the 90% of sturgeon especially when we are not living in the origin country.

Oops, I truly forget about that crap it seems it was wiped out from memory also I have not seen any ova in recent years so I can't say anything about it so I'll talk about anime series in this decade .

Compare 2004, 2005, 2006 to 2011, 2012, 2013 and tell me how much quality animes was produced in these years?

As I said, there IS a quality anime but it's not as much as before!

Yeah, and I am not a big fan of american sitcoms or office shows, I rather watch action shows like Person of Interest or Arrow. Even if the mainstream goes in a different direction, you still find shows that interest you and don't have moe, harem and/or schools.

I still like Anime, but a lot of the current day stuff gives ammunition to people who want to hate it. Even the good shows give the haters ammo.

Everything give haters ammo. That's why they're "haters", they can take offense at everything and nitpick every single flaw. Give me anything where nobody jumps out of a bush and argues against.

Yeah I'm in the same boat; I'm not sure it's literally that there's a decline in quality, but there's much greater exposure to terrible anime, and we don't have the 30+ years of backlog to draw from when we first encountered the genre.

(Note: I know anime has been around for much longer than 30 years, but I meant relatively few anime from before that are widely watched.)

I'll admit that I bought the box sets for dragonball {the uncut dub is glorious}, and digimon seasons 1 and 3, and they all hold up very well. I'm definitely buying cowboy bebop on blu ray.

and I was hit right in the nostalgia when they announced a sequel to season 2 of digimon.

There is a huge amount of anime out there that is really creepy and exploitative. That is seen by people who aren't familiar with the medium and they associate anime with loli creepiness, upskirt shots and other bizarre tropes of the medium. The solution is more anime that doesn't have those tropes.

It has changed a lot. I still like anime, but I sticking with old school masterwork like Mad bull 34, thank you very much.
I only post that pic as I find it to be funny. Also what is the one on the right.

Let's compare lists of quality anime TV series for two years. (This is going by my personal frame of reference, so no pretense to exhaustiveness.)

2006:
Ayakashi: Samurai Horror Tales (mostly the Bakeneko arc)
Bartender
Black Lagoon
Code Geass, maybe
Gintama (though the early part wasn't as good as it would become)
Hataraki Man
Honey and Clover II
Kemonozume (the first half, anyway)
Nana
Ouran High School Host Club

2013:
Eccentric Family
Encouragement of Climb
Flowers of Evil
Gundam Build Fighters
Love Lab
Minami-ke Tadaima
Pupipo!
Rozen Maiden
Silver Spoon
Space Battleship Yamato 2199
Yowamushi Pedal
Yozakura Quartet: Hana no Uta

No, I can't really agree with your premise. Aside from 2007, which was an unusually bang-up year, I think the last decade has been roughly on-par year-by-year in terms of number of quality TV anime, with somewhat stronger and somewhat weaker years as the case may be.

Oh, we're playing that game now.

[Warning: nothing explicit, but you should think hard before enlarging the picture]

[1] (forgot the name), Kids on the Slope, Space Brothers, Hellsing Ultimate
[2] Fate/Zero, Jormungand, Puella Magi Madoka, (don't recognize)
[3] Usagi Drop, RAINBOW, Tiger & Bunny, Bakemonogatari
[4] Psycho-Pass, Haruhi Suzumiya (Disappearance I presume), Steins;Gate, Gundam Unicorn
[5] (don't recognize), Break Blade, Kids on the Slope (again?), Kaiji

Thanks to Moral Panic for some names

Compare 2004, 2005, 2006 to 2011, 2012, 2013 and tell me how much quality animes was produced in these years?

11-13 with a cursory glance:

Blue Exorcist.
Bunny Drop.
Fate/Zero.
Future Diary.
Hidamari Sketch.
Hunter X Hunter.
The Idolmaster.
Is this a zombie.
Nichijou.
Persona 4 the animation.
Madoka Magica.
Squid Girl.
Steins;Gate.
Tiger and Bunny.
Bakuman.
JoJo's Bizarre Adventure.
Kuroko no Basket.
Love, Chunibyou and other Delusions.
Lupin III The Woman called Fujiko Mine.
Psycho-Pass.
Space Battleship Yamato 2199.
Space Brothers.
Sword Art Online (LOL)
A certain magical index.
Ace of the diamond.
Arpeggio of blue steel.
Attack on Titan.
Blood Lad.
The devil is a part-timer.
Free!
Gargantia on the verdurous planet.
Gatchaman Crowds.
Genshiken Second Season.
Gundam Build Fighters.
Hajime no Ippo: Rising.
Kill la Kill.
Kyosogiga.
Love Live.
Samurai Flamenco.
Valvrave the Liberator.
Watamote.
Yowamushi Pedal.

That's a very good list of a lot of quality anime that appeal to a shit ton of different people, the bolded especially range from super popular, overall just great to GOAT candidates. Anime hasn't gotten worse, there's just way more that we get now.

It carries a bad stigma. One girl at work caught me reading Naruto on my phone at break. And now she things I'm into hentai. How she came to that conclusion? Fuck if I know.

His not serious with his post, check his spoilered part.
Seems like that. But I don't want to have that picture just standing here uncommented, especially since there are actually people on the nostalgia trip where everything was paradise before nowadays ruined everything.

What anime are those in the "right now" section?
[1] (forgot the name), Kids on the Slope, Space Brothers, Hellsing Ultimate
[2] Fate/Zero, Jormungand, Madoka, (don't recognize)
[3] Usagi Drop, (don't recognize), (don't recognize), Bakemonogatari
[4] Psycho-Pass, Haruhi Suzumiya (Disappearance I presume), Steins;Gate, (looks like Gundam)
[5] (don't recognize), (don't recognize), Kids on the Slope (again?), Kaiji

Others can surely fill the gaps.

Well I think you dropped a lot of the 2006 list and included some not worthy of 2013.

Which is the essence of why this argument is dumb, because people have different tastes, and just because you don't personally find as many enjoyable anymore, doesn't mean anime has changed. I think, this might sound crazy, but you might have just gotten older and your tastes have changed.

As much as I enjoy Free! for its gratuitous fan-service, I think the industry needs to tone it down and focus on upping the variety of its character designs, including less aesthetically pleasing ones. Stuff like Cowboy Bebop and Guardian of the Spirit were great for their variety cast member designs.

I don't think there is a causation, but I find there is a correlation between if someone hates anime, and if they are insufferable. I think it is because if a person is so judgmental on something so niche, it probably means that they make a point on being negative on anything they don't deem "worthy."

GB is bad a lot with that just because of how hypocritical they are about it. They will say anime is terrible in one breath, and then praise stuff like Asura's Wrath and MGS2. It makes it look like they hate anime only because it is "cool" to do so.

Or maybe they're humans who's views don't always coincide with "I like this because it's this, and hate this because it's this." MGS is perhaps my favorite game series of all time, and I as well think anime is fucking terrible. I've tried to get into it numerous times, but I find it so bad and cringe worthy most of the time. I do like some of the over the top blood and gore anime's, but anytime there are children or teenagers it becomes unbearable to watch.

Edit: Also, why must seemingly everything from japan have their characters constantly going "ohh"? ughhh.

Afaik was the whole #reclaimanimeavatar thing started by Leigh Alexander, so it's nothing that should be taken serious to begin with. She's just trolling.

Fanservice needs to pick its spots. I enjoy fanservice, but I don't enjoy it in everything. As much as I loved No Game No Life, I feel a lot of the fanservice hampers it, since I now can't recommend it to just about anyone I know.

Varied character designs, yeah, but I understand why there will never be an actually ugly obese guy as the lead for a shonen series, it just doesn't sell.

I thought it would be obvious that I was joking when I said that Mad bull 34 was a masterpiece. Mad bull 34 is bad, but in a so bad it is awesome way. If you have not read mad bull 34 or seen the anime, do it. It is fucking insane
Madbull34cover.jpg

Shitting on people who like anime is as close as you could get to a victimless crime. This is of course if you consider shitting on people a crime but given that people who like anime think its entertainment, I guess its probably correct to shit on them.

They're the worst.

Well I think you dropped a lot of the 2006 list and included some not worthy of 2013.

There's always a year or two with only few good anime/movie/games/etc. WRPG folks have suffered something like that which to a point where they play Dragon Age 2 because there aren't any game within the same genre that year. "Golden Age" is a coined term for a reason when a period of years just traight out filled with good creative works instead of just one and two.

Also that short-list ny Aaron doesn't even have Baccano, Spice and Wolf, Durarara, and Mushishi.
I know they are years where the good things seems gone. But instead of lamenting and yelling at the cloud, why wouldn't we just enjoy the few good things we have?

The past is always looked upon fondly because only the good stuff (and the REALLY bad stuff I guess) are remembered. This is far from an anime only occurrence.

I remember talking to someone ten years ago in 2004 about how much I like anime. They said that anime sucked now and they wish they could go back to the way it was in the mid 90's.

Nostalgia is great, but letting it inform your opinions is super shitty.

No no my taste is the same I still like HunterXHunter (2nd re-run) and I adore FMA the 2nd re-run because of the quality which I'm sure most will not argue otherwise and I like kill la kill, Mushishi sequel which I found the best animes of this year,

Maybe my argument is dump as you said but it's still what I believe it's the reason why the mainstream hatred of anime growing as I know few people who stopped watching and start hating new anime because of this reason.

It's not Dragon Ball Z, of course people aren't gonna like anime these days. It's like when people say TV programming sucks now, shows like Doug and Recess aren't being made anymore. Or lion King and Toy Story. Bit by the nolestalgia bug most likely
