We already know about 49 characters, counting all Miis as one.

If its the final roster, we already have to play classic + all star 98 times just to beat it in one intensity setting

May have to be 102 because the 3 different versions of mii fighters may have their own trophies to unlock

True.. but in Melee and Brawl, beating a mode with a character with transformation gave you multiple trophies at the same time

True but Mii Fighters aren't a transformation so we really have no idea how Sakurai will define completion in Classic/All star mode with them

I'm suddenly finding my interest in SSB waning. :( Can someone re-hype me? Maybe it's just that we've been getting near-daily announcements about the game, big and small, for so long now, but I suddenly just feel like I already know everything about the game and the experience of playing it (like MK8) is going to lose its appeal after just a few weeks or so. Someone, please feel free to tell me I'm crazy. I was a huge fan of 64 and Melee and did not care for Brawl (I only played it once or twice but I just couldn't get into it at all).

I hope we do. What's more, I hope that every character comes with three interesting versions of itself - for example, Peach could have Peach, Paper Peach, and Striker Peach, while Pikachu could have Pikachu, Surfing Pikachu, and Balloon Pikachu.

We have 51 characters w/ Mii Fighters counted separately (and we can see that Sakurai does count them separately), which means that 40+ doesn't mean that the roster is finished w/ the addition of the remaining leaked characters!!!!!!!!!!!

Well, if it's anything like MK8, at least you can expect a couple of DLC packs to boost interest when it wanes. Though it should take a lot longer for that to happen - we haven't been shown all that much of the trophies, challenges, music and custom moves you'll spend most of your time unlocking in the single-player portion, and improved netcode will make a world of difference to its longevity online.

I guess Paper Peach and Balloon Pikachu would be really cute. I guess I don't want to get my hopes up about unexpected variations like that being in there

I don't know if I am excited about x number of characters so much as the actual modes of gameplay offering enough. I imagine we'll have a lot more challenges than it looked like in that screenshot (I hope so, at least, and I'm imagining so based on KI:U's unlockable challenge grids). That's neat. But I don't know if online MP will keep my attention and interest on a sustained basis so I'm a bit disappointed that the SP mode (Classic Mode) seems so lean on content and length. I understand the thinking behind it, but I was hoping for more from it than it seems like we might be getting. I was also hoping for Event Mode and I dunno if we're getting that either. I don't mean to sound so down on the game, I just don't want this to be a repeat of MK8 where I hyped it for myself and it was fun but I got burned out on it quickly.

Incidentally, my understanding is that with Brawl, we already knew just about everything going in? Is that an accurate statement?

Secondly, do you guys feel like we know as much about SSB4 3DS as we did about Brawl, and/or that there's a lot more to the game we don't yet know about?

That's a good point. Are custom moves something we expect to unlock? I do see challenges in particular holding my interest more than other aspects of the game.

I like Mushroomy Kingdom and Pictochat, Norfair instead was a letdown... it sounded fun but it ended up being annoying like many of the stages in Brawl.

Anyway, I'm replaying Xenoblade Chronicles now... DAT Shulk hype!!!!

Imagine the Hades Treasure Hunt with 1000 panels

lol

Ahhhhhhh

How wonderful

But seriously, Sakurai could have done challenges for EVERYTHING if he so desired.

Every single stage could have had its own set of challenges

You could have done a couple dozen trophies solely based around trophy unlocking!

so I haven't played melee since 2007, and just recently tried out project M..and wow man this game makes me miss melee sooo much. This game brings me back the fun i had with smash q.q

hopefully Smash 4 brings back that joy after that bad taste brawl left me.

In the demos of Smash Run, items like Charge Shot (Melee) were listed among end-of-round rewards with things like trophies and hats, so it seems like we will have to unlock them. 8 extra moves for 51 characters should probably take a decent amount of time to collect.

Knowing who the characters are and what moves they have is only half the battle!

Playing them is a totally different experience. With 50 characters there's so much to learn, explore and practice... it could be a while before the experience really runs out.

Why are people saying the Wii-U version will add 5-10 more characters? That wouldn't make any sense at all and would only serve as a kick in the nuts to those who will only buy the 3DS version.

Why continuously stress about the character rosters being the same if it's not true?

We knew a lot more about Brawl going in just because the purpose of the Dojo was to reveal nearly everything about the game.

Smash 3DS still has a lot of mysteries, like "what the hell is this even" and "just how many different final battles for Smash Run are there." Being an MP focused game I do think they get away with a lot in regards to how much they're willing to show before it becomes overkill, especially since I don't mind those things being revealed upfront when that's mainly what I want to know when I gauge how much longevity the package will provide me with.

Because it could be added as DLC to retain parity that parity.

With a free DLC adding them to 3DS at the same time it wouldn't be kicking anyone's nuts.
And nobody really trusts Sakurai, he's full of secrets and lies

Some weird assumptions that Wii U will get extra characters to keep hype and add them to 3DS for free.

If those characters were added to the 3DS version via either a free DLC pack or as part of routine updates, it wouldn't technically lead to disparate rosters, and would allow the development team more time to fit in characters that would otherwise be excluded; also allowing them the benefit of being able to market more newcomers / returning veterans around the time of the Wii U version's launch.

Wii U version challenges will be harder

expect bullshit

But yes, Sakurai should just go crazy with the challenges :p

what if Uprising was a demo for what to expect from Smash Bros? Like what Nomura is doing with XV :O

Let's be honest, if Smash Wii U is releasing November as speculated, does that not leave the team with a single month to debug, add five fighters, and bring the game to gold status?

Seems farfetched in all honesty.

Regarding the roster number I'm so used to companies saying things like 50+ characters! (or whatever they are trying to advertise as a lot) even when they only have 51 because they can get away with it because it's true, 51 is 50+. If the Mii guys and all that are counted in the roster count as individuals and that does go over 50 I find it odd to not want to show off that and go with the lower "over 40". If Miis count as 1 character and that's under 50 or 49 or whatever the estimated count is with the leak then I'm willing to bet that is all the characters. I would love to be wrong as the more characters the better of course.

It's not like the characters are being created from scratch. The 4-5 extra weeks afforded by the Wii U version's release might be enough to retain characters that were already in development but unable to be finished in time for the 3DS launch.

They should bring back those fight on a trophy challenges.

And the prophecy of the Ridley stage would finally come to pass.

Yes we get it, you wanted Chico Time instead of Shulk Time. No need to go on about it.

Technically, he still gets the
Rosetta &
Chico Time he was asking for. ;)

I go to Ikebukuro Station everyday on my commute. I wonder which posters are there.

Nothing but Youkai Watch here in Nerima. :(

Apparently the Robin/Ike/Shulk/Marth one that Sora Sagaya retweeted was at Ikebukuro, but there may be others as well. I don't know if we have any in Nakano, but I'm really curious now! I wonder where else the other posters are...

Yeah, customs gotta be unlocked.

I feel there's still more we don't know about yet.

Cool, thank you. I hope you're right!

Yes, we already know that Smash Run enemies may drop them :p

Oh, neat. I hope there's some good stuff there. Do you mean permanent custom moves, though, or temporary ones to use in the post-Run match?

In the demos of Smash Run, items like Charge Shot (Melee) were listed among end-of-round rewards with things like trophies and hats, so it seems like we will have to unlock them. 8 extra moves for 51 characters should probably take a decent amount of time to collect.

That's a good point, too. I guess with MK8 the characters don't feel as different or take as much time to learn as they do with Smash, because in Smash each character is so different from one another, whereas in MK8 there are more classes of differences but fewer individual differences.

No, because that's assuming no progress had been made on these characters before (who may have had to be cut due to time constraints on the 3DS) and that they weren't going into crunch time on the Wii U version until after the 3DS releases.

It's a pipe dream, but it's not that unfeasible.

I SURE HOPE IT IS

And we also have that mysterious Team Mode thingy which showed up for a few frames in the Smash Bros Direct IIRC and then was never mentioned again...

I had forgotten all about it. Shame it didn't get referenced during Menu Week, but we'll know soon enough.

Cool, thank you. I hope you're right!

We have the spinning top like game we don't know about, StreetPass, Wii U connectivity, "album" which has not been spoken about, the trophy garden looking thing, the replay channel functions, All-Stars and so forth.

There's a LOT we don't know.

Plus, even with the primer on Classic Mode there's still a bit we don't know about it, especially in regards to bosses. So yeah, there's still stuff to uncover.

Or rather, there would be stuff to uncover for us if Japan didn't get it a month early.

I think the idea is more that the Wii U version will add more, and the 3DS will get them as DLC.

On a new note, has Sakurai ever commented on the possibility of balance patches?

This would be really big and as important as more characters to me. It's almost impossible to balance a game of 50 characters so it would be pretty cool if they were willing to do an patch or two down the line.

From my understanding, the additional characters are already being worked on (which is why they were able to be shown to ash at PAX), but they won't be ready for the WiiU release. Rather, they're being saved for "Super Smash Bros 6", which is a WiiU DLC pack/exclusive New3DS game, since the 3DS can't handle characters like the Ice Climbers.
