Super Smash Bros. for 3DS & Wii U Thread 14: Snake... had a hard life

On a new note, has Sakurai ever commented on the possibility of balance patches?

This would be really big and as important as more characters to me. It's almost impossible to balance a game of 50 characters so it would be pretty cool if they were willing to do an patch or two down the line.

This is from last year

We’re not at a stage in development where we’re going through those fine sorts of adjustments. When we get towards the end of development, we will have what we call monitor playtests, where we watch people play the games. We perform thorough analysis based on those observations. There have been cases in the past, admittedly, where we didn’t gather sufficient data for certain characters, and that resulted in certain game imbalances. Patches are something we’d definitely like to be able to do, if possible.

From my understanding, the additional characters are already being worked on (which is why they were able to be shown to ash at PAX), but they won't be ready for the WiiU release. Rather, they're being saved for "Super Smash Bros 6", which is a WiiU DLC pack/exclusive New3DS game, since the 3DS can't handle characters like the Ice Climbers.

Having to buy the New 3DS just for Smash content...if it comes in a box, I'm going to have to buy it and hate myself for doing so.

The issue isn't about stages being too far out or extreme imho.

Like, I've barely ever heard anyone complain about Norfair, that stage's hazard literally covers the entire visible playing area.

Pretty much all stages that are absolutely hated by many share the same basic problem: horrible horrible base lay-out.

75M? Shit layout.
Hanenboy? Shit layout. (especially as the fight progresses.)
New Pork? Shit Layout.
Mushroomy Kingdom? lol..

From all these I find New Pork City to be the least shitty. When playing for fun, the stage can be pretty hilarious sometimes.
I agree on all the other suggestions. Especially Hanenboy - I have ignored this stage so much to the point where I forgot it existed.

So what would everyone think if this was the DLC

Isabelle
Ridley
Chorus Kids
Impa
Dixie Kong
Mewtwo
Lucas
Wolf
Ice Climbers
Great Tiger

Wouldn't care for Isabelle and Great Tiger, but with all the other characters added, the roster would be 100% perfect.
If you replace Isabelle/Great Tiger with Captain Syrup and either Lip or Snake, it'd be 200% perfect.

Haha, I just saw Sora Sagaya retweet that. I told her how I saw one at Shinjuku Station (the one she retweeted was in Ikebukuro), and she said that there are probably big posters at all the big stations along the Yamanote Line (e.g. Shibuya, Tokyo).

That's cool. I really like that poster. I can imagine that they didn't include Lucina because she's a secret character this time.

I wonder if they changed their mind about Lucina being unlockable because they didn't have enough time to add one more character for unlockable position so they decided to change Lucina into secret character or something?

Is... This sarcasm?

Interesting thought, since there was a job posting for Smash 6.

Well if it's treated as like a giant new expansion pack (like Super Luigi U), I don't think it would be that bad to make it N3DS exclusive. It also gets around the problem of having to hold back content from the WiiU version because of the low specs of the 3DS version, which seems to be happening right now. I wouldn't be surprised if Sakurai gave up on trying to get the Ice Climbers and Chorus Kids to work once he heard about the N3DS, and just decided to save them for the update. That's why you still see Smash Run enemies from their series.

Maybe we'll get some new stages in Smash 6 too (that the 3DS couldn't handle), explaining the terrible stage roster?

Yeah! And it was posted around the time where at least I'd imagine they'd start thinking about this kind of thing, so it lines up in my mind.

Because Pichu is in the game already, he just evolved. And because there's not as much of a need, because Pikachu's down B didn't change to something horrible in Brawl, so Pichu doesn't need to bring it back!

But... Mario is in the game already, he's just wearing different clothes.

I will admit a big reason I hate new pork is due to having to fight team Ness & Lucas on it so often.

Also: The camera on New Pork SUUUCKS. WHY DOES IT REFUSE TO ZOOM IN GOD.

If the camera was fixed I'd already like the stage 10x better.

Never and I doubt he will consider it. Plus, if I remember a lot of people don't like this idea for smash because of few dumb reasons, and double that with the fact that only the developers/tester can report when in the FGC everybody can report during the different locktest phases.

Not really, just the obvious stuff. There was a listing calling for workers for "Smash 6", there are obvious omissions from the roster (two of which Sakurai said would be technically challenging to include), and the fact that the N3DS exists.

Highly unlikely.

After all this stress on the same roster, they're now going to bunk off the largest Smash 4 install base, which will inevitably be 3DS to make DLC for Wii U and for some stupid reason, the N3DS.

Additionally, N3DS players probably won't be able to play with 3DS users then, so N3DS players will be sparse for a while.

Right.

It would be the same roster though, for the original version of the game. Smash 6 would be a "new" game for the N3DS, which is available as DLC for the WiiU. What do you think Smash 6 is, in all honesty? Why would they not make an update, when a new system exists that will allow them to add in more characters that the 3DS couldn't handle?

Most people say a listing error, I think.

And if it's anything like the GBC, in a few years it's the only version of the device anybody will have.

I could see something similar going ahead, but I doubt it'd be a boxed release, and I especially doubt it'd be N3DS/Wii U exclusive. At the very worst, resource-intensive characters will be available with restrictions (i.e. no more than 2 Ice Climbers / Chorus Kids can appear at once) when the DLC is downloaded on 3DS.

I've heard some speculate that it was error and the listing was actually referring to Soul Calibur 6. Makes way more sense.

Does it? That's a pretty big error to make haha. I mean I guess it could go either way, but I'm pretty sure that's the only way we'll end up getting more characters (or at least characters like te ice climbers). After looking at how Nintendo handles stuff like the GBA games on 3DS, I don't think they'd release anything that works less than optimal, like having to put restrictions on how many people play as Ice Climbers. So either just on WiiU, or on WiiU and N3DS.

Then bye smash bros.

While I doubt there will be characters exclusive to N3DS/WiiU, I believe the game might make use of the upgraded hardware in the future, like allowing more items/pokeballs at once, or allowing ATs to run at 60fps, but not something that would divide the fanbase like exclusive characters/stages/modes

Question: After the release of the Game Boy Color, did you know anybody without a Game Boy Color?

I was born in 1991 and grew up near Boston, so I lived in a reasonable representation of East Coast America. Pokémon fever hit us harder than a hurricane and every child had a GBC, but I never saw anybody with an original Game Boy. I've only ever seen ONE Game Boy in the hands of a player, playing some blurred attempt at Pokémon Blue, sitting on a curb in Maine.

To this day that's the only original Game Boy I've ever seen personally.

This is not dissimilar to the DS to the DS Lite. A year after the Lite was out, that's what you had. That machine was the hands down most popular version of the system and it wasn't even as big of an update as the New 3DS.

I'm curious what it was like for other people, because my experience suggests the New 3DS will be the standard machine very quickly.

That's what I'm expecting too. It looks cooler, the 3D apparently actually works well (the reason I always leave it off is because I hate how the slightest movement ruins the effect), and on top of that it gets exclusive games and features. I don't know why anyone wouldn't upgrade, honestly.

So it really was just plucked from thin air. Obvious? A HA HA HA!

When has Sakurai ever commented on the Chorus Kids? Answer: never. We don't even know how they work so for all we know they are less difficult to implement than Captain Olimar and the Pikmin.

I didn't have the GBC when it came out. Only the regular ol' brick. :)

That said, I think the Nu3DS is more like the DSi rather than the DS Lite (I feel like the 3DS XL is more aking to the Lite), but unlike the DSi, it seems like the Nu3DS is actually appealing.

This is definitely the case I grew up with as well for the systems. GBA SP was the same way . However to be fair the DSi never really caught on so it makes me wonder about the New 3DS that coupled with how much mobile has taken over for kids. I think it'll do well but it's going to be more of a slow start. Since I doubt Nintendo will make a exclusive Pokemon for it which would be one of the biggest factors in bumping up numbers in the west.

--------

As I've said before all I want are all the cut characters back. With that the roster is Holden to me.

Why would they cut some of my favourites like Wolf and Ice Climbers when they can cut boring characters like Mario ;~;

Just joking. I kept reading many people's comments about Shulk is most boring character in XenoBlade.

See, for me, I always thought the DSi was a flop because it removed popular features (backwards compatibility) and added features nobody wanted (AAC playback) in their place. What was the selling point of a DSi? The New 3DS has MANY.

Well obviously anyone who buys in after the N3DS launches will buy that. The problem is there are 45 million (?) 3DS out there. How many GB/GBP where out there before GBC launched? And were there a lot of games that didnt work on the GB but only worked for GBC? I remeber pokemon box art said GBC but it worked just fine on GB.

Edit: to answer your question. I knew one kid who had a GB and one kid who had a GBP. I had a GBC.

Edit 2: Now that I think about it, red and blue box art said GB and it worked on GBC? But silver and gold said GBc. I'm guessing it didnt work on GB.

Let's be honest, if Smash Wii U is releasing November as speculated, does that not leave the team with a single month to debug, add five fighters, and bring the game to gold status?

Seems farfetched in all honesty.

Its the other way around, some of these characters may in fact be already finished in the wiiu version (ice climbers and chorus men in particular come to mind) while they had trouble being finished in the 3ds game. The team working on the 3ds build can use from the time the 3ds version went gold until the launch of the wiiu version to finish these characters and add them to the 3ds game

New game? Lol dat milking if its $40 , make it $20

Probably a "New" 3DS version with all characters since the new 3DS will have better specs .

I just want ice climbers for Wii u version, if they never come to the 3DS then no loss since I'll have the Wii u version >:)

I was born in 1988 and in France the pokemonia was very strong, but I don't remember seen people with a lot of the newish Color until a year. But yeah, the addition of the color was a great surprise and some games like Wario Land 3/ TLOZ Season's/ Pokemon Crystal worth the upgrade.
